Sadly not, but that run from 2013-2018 he absolutely was one of the top 5-10 d-men in the league, being pretty consistently excellent (outside of 2016). He’ll be one of the very few to win the Norris and not make the Hall.
My brother broke his neck back in 2009 when he was 13 , he would stay at Saint-Justine Hospital in Montreal. Everytime P.K came to visit, he would recognize my brother by face and treat him like he was his own family. I'll always respect Subban!

I think Subban's playstyle was built on his physical traits. The unreal explosiveness and strenght shored up the cracks in his hockey IQ. Once those declined a bit he couldn't re-invent himself to be a top level NHL player anymore.

I can agree with the first part but not the second. Physical is not enough to be a Norris winner. But if a big part of your game is that physical side then as that dips you dip. His ego or whatever did not see him changing his game so as he always planned to go out when he couldn’t play how he wanted to play.
@@SirCanuckelhead that's why I said "shored up the cracks" he obviously still had elite skill and great hockey iq to achieve what he did. His tendecies and playstyle that he had probably sweared by since his late teens just didn't translate when the extra omph in his skates compared to even most pros started to go away.
He had hockey IQ. Look at the plays he made. Not many could do that. He was a risky player it came with good and bad.

Subban (and other Habs players) have helped my little brother so much while he was fighting leukaemia. might have acted a bit crazy on ice and with the media, but the man was a class act whenever he was dealing with fans. a true Habs legend in my eyes

He got hurt and tried to play through it. From what I read, he suffered a lower back and leg injury. Most guys don't realize you can do that in your 20s but at 28-32, it will come back to haunt you.
I’m a Devils fan, so I never got to experience prime time PK like he was on the habs and preds, but he’s still one of my favorite players ever. Partly because of how electric he was in his years before NJ, but the guy is such an outstanding person off the ice. A fun guy who did right by whatever community he was a part of. For example, with the Devils he started the blue line buddies program in Newark. Class act!

Burned my Habs jersey and kept my PK watch when he was traded. I never watched the NHL again. I'm 61 and born and raised in Montreal. I'll never forgive the organization for trading the best defenseman they ever had (excluding Bob Gainey of course). Bergevin couldn't control him and neither could the coaching staff. They failed him, not the other way around.

He played a great game for a long time. His interviews were always good, his charitable work was/is amazing, loved his appreciation for the old hockey greats, and I enjoy his analysis during broadcasts now. Unfortunate to see him fall off so hard, but I think the move to Jersey just took his heart out of it. Dude got fame, paid, Vonn, but ran out of gas. Hopefully he sticks around in the broadcast booth.
PK is amongst the greatest players of his era, no doubt. His intensity on the ice during games and practice is a testament to his commitment to competing at the rarest and highest levels. Much like Michael Jordan pushed the Bulls, PK instinctively knew the value of 100% commitment to the ideal of always striving to be better. His generosity and human touch off the ice makes him a true ambassador of the game. He deserves all the honour and recognition the sport of hockey can give.

I always disliked bergevin and will always be ashamed of his work. Bergerman scored one of the ugliest goal in his own net while he was a blues
You are mistaken, he did put up the points, but he was defensive blunder. Norris is more about points then defense. Worst plus minus on the Devils, twice. Choked the puck more often then touched it. And the finale..... no one wanted him after his contract ended, forced to retire because he sucked it so bad.

Honestly I think his down fall could be related to his up & down in his now failed relationship he had with American skier Lindsey Vonn. Had he just focus on the game & not all the distractions of being in their relationship & all the media hype, maybe things would be different?
He played himself off of several teams then went woke with his race baiting & finger pointing message promoting hockey and also insulting it at the same time. He was probably already over the hill by then and thankfully is now gone.

He was always a defensive liability and disliked by his teamates. That being said, fun personality, outgoing and exciting style.
He was a great athlete, but I have the feeling he wasn’t a great teammate and got distracted by so many things outside the ice that he wasn’t taking hockey as seriously as he should have.That neck injury really slowed him down. Great human being.

That tough style of play will definitely take its toll, but I think the big part of his downfall was the hype. He started worrying more about his image and all the off ice shenanigans than his game. Pair that with his declining game and it started to just make it look like was all show and no go.

I beg to differ. Gallagher, Toews, Marchand..they all play tough hockey and are still around. PK, unfortunately, spent more time and effort building his online brand than playing hockey. And even though I loved him on Mtl, as a Habs fan, his attitude was an issue....everywhere he went. He didn't "decide" to retire. No one wanted him. I was, and still am, hoping Mtl would give him a 1yr offer at a simple million or two. I sincerely think he can find his magic in Mtl, again. Assholes like Therrien and Bergevin are gone.

As someone from Montreal, I cannot overstate how beloved Subban was. He was an absolute icon, was invited to the biggest talk shows, had murals painted in his honour and more. Even my friends who don't know crap about hockey loved Subban, and they still like him. Hockey players tend to have dull personalities, and Subban was outspoken, charismatic and easy-to-love. And spectacular too, of course. He took French lessons so he could speak directly with the fans and was actually able to have conversations, when we usually fall head over heel when a player can mutter "bonjour" or read on cue cards. My friends in Montreal have no clue who McDavid is. Some couldn't even identify Crosby on a picture. But Subban is still immensely popular to this day in Quebec, and might be the most popular Habs player I've ever seen to non-hockey fans.
People in Montreal only know who Carey Price is . Of course they wouldn't know who Conor McDavid is
Was shocked when I heard about the trade. Hearing Weber was the return player definitely made it easier to accept. He definitely walked to the beat of his own drum. Being a Habs fan I got to watch the best of subban. He was high risk and high reward

Anytime someone ends up on the cover of an EA Sports game it goes poorly. Especially noticeable in the NFL with what is known as the "Madden Curse". Whoever appears on the cover of Madden NFL has a cursed season. Think this year is Tom Brady (there are two players on the cover of Madden 2022, Brady and Patrick Mahomes).

His neck injury on Emelin butt was the end of him. He had spine issues all the time after that. He lost all his speed and became very slow. I was sad when MTL trade him but i think they knew that his injury was worst then it looked. And some haters were saying he was faking that injury. 🙄
I think Toronto should call him an offer a 1 or 2 year deal. They need a guy like him to bring up the emotion !! The guy his in shape and would play his heart out for is own town. Was fun to Watch in MTL Go HAbs Go ;)

As a Montrealer myself... I credit PK for me getting back to watching hockey and even playing hockey again. His electrifying presence on the ice was magical here in Montreal. I really wished somehow the hockey gods would bring him back here to finish out his career. Thanks for all the great memories PK! Let's see you on TV as one of the announcer's now.

Throwback to when the Oilers were looking to acquire Subban but the Habs price was Draisaitl, the Oilers 4th overall pick in 2016, Nurse/Klefbom, and another asset.
Further to that similar to Phaneuf, Subban was amazing for a few years however both had a fall from grace and a contract nightmare.
PK got "blackballed" in Montreal ... then "blacklisted" in Nashville... then he "blacked out" in New Jersey!
first time i saw PK was in the 2008 CHL Memorial Cup and i was an instant fan. sad to see him gone

He was such a good fit in MTL too, nobody played better under pressure than PK (Price close 2nd)
Polarizing player. He was very intense and electrifying. I knew he would one day win the Norris. I called it 2 years before he won it but no one believed me lol He was our best player on the ice after Price for years. As a Habs fan, I really enjoyed his play, but I really despise how he was treated by some fans, the coaches especially Michel Therrien, and especially the GM Marc Bergevin. Because he was so confident, some people really hated that in Montreal. It took me years to forgive Bergevin for the trade with Nashville. I started watching the Habs more regularly once he got fired. Unfortunately, the neck and back injuries stopped his incredible play. He couldn't reinvent himself. He has a bright future ahead of him in other areas like TV because of his charismatic personality.
Even though Subban was a shell of himself on NJ, I'm glad he played for us. Didn't expect to much from him, his back was toast.
I could see his decline starting right at the end of his time with the preds where he was never the same after coming back from injury in the 2018 Season. That being said, I NEVER would have expected him to become an absolute plug of a Player in NJ. Preds made out surprisingly well in that trade given the hindsight.
His Sister was my art teacher for a year in Middle School, got to talk to him on the phone. Very cool moment!
PK was a good player who get the Andrei Markov effect. Mike Komisarek, Sheldon Sourray, Marc-André Bergeron, ans so many others d-man has been over-evaluated because they were playing with the most underated d-man of all-time. Markov was really really good, reliant, able to play against anyone, incredible on PP, he made everyone look better. Subban has been just okay defensively, but playing with Markov, nobody cared. When Markov got hurt, everyone saw the flaws in his game. In Nashville, Josi gave him the kind of same support, so he was still shining, but in New Jersey he was really alone.
Markov was great but that's a horrible take, he never even played on the same line as Josi when he was in Nashville and all the advanced stats and eye test scouting reports pointed to him being one of the best defensive players in the league, if anything playing with Markov was positive for his point totals but not his defensive game, on top of that subban pit up great numbers with and without Markov
Loved Subban with both Montreal and Nashville, he was a spectacular two-way player with both teams. What a shame he fell off the way he did.
Man PK was such a great player in Montreal and Nashville. I feel like going to New jersey who was still rebuilding was a bad move. New jersey had the players but so many injuries and also didn't fit PKs playstyle. I guess you can also factor in the personal life as his breakup happened during that time as well. Who knows maybe he will try a PTO after a year or so. I sure hope so

Me and my brother grew up idolizing him and helped us love and become better hockey players, with Subban retired and Price’s career likely coming to an end it shows that you’ve grown up so much! Anyways… I wish him and Price good luck in the future.
Pk wanted to play in mtl , im convinced that being traded while on top of his skills and popularity , broke him . That is why he never was the same player again.
The last season in Montreal he injured his neck and was never the same after. His skating looked much worse already his first year in Nashville. His decline in skating and the league overall going towards a faster game led to his quick decline.
I remember watching his first game during that playoff. he was electrifying. I was shocked when the Habs traded him. They should have gone for a fwd instead, at the time the Oilers were shopping Taylor Hall and needed a dman. that would have been an exciting trade for both clubs.
There was a potential Oilers trade for Subban, didn't involve Hall tho, it was Draisaitl & 2016 1st rd for Subban

He should be remembered for his ice capades moves and all the leads he cost to his team(s) because of his lack of D game.
His fall off, IMO, was more so due to the Devils being an overall awful team. Great players on bad teams suffer analytically. PK seems like he has the type of personality and drive that can take him far no matter what irons he puts in the fire. I'm sure he was looking forward to doing something different with his life at this point, rather than beat the hell out of himself hoping the stars align for a Cup victory that may never come.
He is a victim of the style changes of skaters training. There was a leap in skating ability about the time he came in the league coming from new training techniques I believe. PK lost his advantage and went from exceptional to a better than average skater. At the same time he started putting on muscle mass and weight which I believe was not to his advantage. His advantage came from being able to turn on a dime. For me, him and Kovalev were the most exciting canadiens players I had the chance to see in my lifetime. Nothing but good memories from PK.

From that Montreal-Nashville trade, at least both players got a shot at the Stanley Cup which is almost a fair trade. I think both teams have won in this trade and I can only hope that Weber retires and takes care of himself. Subban has incredible years in front of him and certainly has a big heart. I don't believe his number should be retired, but he for sure deserves a place in the team's HoF.

Not just Montreal. All his team mates everywhere hated him. After NJ couldn't even eat his salary & trade him at the deadline for as much as a bag of pucks he found this off-season absolute ZERO interest from all NHL clubs therefore he ahem "retired".

during his final season in Montreal, he ended it with some kind of nerve injury I reckon. that off-season and the one prior he bulked incredibly and all that muscle really hindered his agility thus negatively impacting his game. it was steady drop off since, he mustered 2 really seasons for Nashville though.

Subban just wasn't a good defencemen, he was a fine goal scorer who wasn't afraid to play the body. However his defensive play was simply poor, I vividly remember game after game of critical turnovers resulting in goals. He was made to be a winger and he was on the d instead.

Subban was great in Montreal. He came in at a time when we had just had a cohort of young prospects who looked like they were going to lead us to the promised land had petered out. He showed and unlike a lot of our defensive prospects he brought excitement and offense immediately. he made the team almost instantaneously and he made it better.We still had Markov from 1998. In 2000 on we had drafted Ron Hainsey and Marcel Hossa. Then Mike Komisarek, Alex Perezhogin and Tomas Plekanec. Then Chris Higgins. Then Andrei kostitsyn . Maxim Lapierre. Then Chipchura, Grabovski, Emelin and Streit, Then Price Latendresse and Sergei Kostitsyn. In one of our all time best drafts we had Subban, McDonagh, Pacioretty and Yannick Weber. In 2009 when we grabbed that star to be Louis Leblanc, Gainey made the McDonagh for Gomez deal and Montreal went for it. Lot of these guys failed over time but it was a lot of young talent and subban was one of the most exciting and succesful. Bergevin came in and hated Subban. He was penny wise with Subban because he loved to kick low status players and kow tow to the big stars and so made Subban "earn" his contract. Subban won the Norris and Bergevin had to Kow Tow to Subban and was forced to give him a too big contract. Subban was great. Injuries dragged him down . He lasted longer but not much better than Shea Weber. When I first saw him my thought was always high risk medium reward, but he was good for the team cause there was no one even on the good habs teams that had his dynamism. He took over games hitting and skating around everyone. I hear all sorts of Hype on Josh anderson who is not half the player Subban was at his height. His offense became better than what I expected at first glance and for a while he energized the Montreal powerplay in a way Weber was not able to. When the trade was made Montreal still had a core or Price, Subban Pacioretty with some aging but still able elements in Plekanec and Markov that could have been built from with a few good drafts. We went the other way adding veterans every year and trading away picks or missing with them. Injury cut his career short as it will but the career he had especially in Montreal and at least for the first year or two in Nashville was great.

If he had stayed working out with the same intensity of his off season the year he won the Norris there would have been no doubt he would have been the greatest athletic defense man of all time. Unfortunately he enjoyed the clubs too much.
PK should still be playing but I think he lost the passion his big contract was a blessing and a curse that being said pretty sure he can still help a team if given a chance.
He was an excellent player, but his toxicity to his own teammates greatly offset that.

I am from MTL and was a big fan of PK. When the trade was done, I was very skeptical. To be fair, Weber did great for us and in the end, it was a fair trade. We went from an ecstatic player to a monster at the blue line. Leadership-wise, Weber was the man and the age difference that everybody was worried about was a non-factor as they both played almost same amount of seasons after the trade. MTL is one of the most conservative team in the NHL and is the complete opposite of the NBA when it comes to flashy players. In your video, you failed to mention that his contract negotiations with the club didn't go very well and MTL didn't want to pay him the money that he wanted as a restricted free agent. Cary price at that time, was the best goalie in the NHL and was making half his salary. That didn't work well in the clubhouse. That being said, I enjoyed his time in MTL.
