  • It's worth noting, regarding Beyond Good And Evil 2 getting greenlit for a sequel... The series was Michel Ancel's passion project, and he was the one constantly pushing for more of it to be made. And he no longer works for Ubisoft, on account of suddenly and immediately retiring from the industry mere days before an article released pointing out how he had been an abusive, hard to work for tyrant in his studio. This was off the back of many noteable 'incidents' regarding Ubisoft management being brought to public attention, going right up to the top. This all happened nearly 4 years ago.

    @Joe90h@Joe90h17 күн бұрын

    • As much as I love Beyond Good and Evil, a sequel never getting made is a blessing to me. Because A) it would mean more money going into the hands of people who shielded literal rapists from the law. and B) Ubisoft's games have long since become uninspired copy-paste affairs that I'm not interested in.

    • @@OneWingedRose I've spoken to some people who worked for a support studio of theirs over in France and for many working in Ubisoft it's basically the equivalent of working in McDonalds until a restaurant starts hiring instead, or you get together to open a restaurant of your own. It's valuable experience in game development, but very few are seeing it as their end goal. I feel like that's becoming the norm with the AAA games industry eating itself alive having to push more and more monetisation to justify weirdly specific tech advances none of us asked for, hiring Hollyood voice actors and complaining how expensive games are to make and not realising that's their problem, not ours.

    • If a game is announced and has nothing to show with the announcement, and the first time you see anything else regarding that title is some sort of "we're working hard on this title!" montage in like a State of Play or something where it shows people at their desks working on 3D models, that game is either never coming out or will be garbage when it does. If a game is going well and coming together you have no problem cutting together 30 seconds of footage of cool things you can do in it.

    • Just saying: The last three games I pre-ordered all exist, I've got them sitting right on my desk as I type this (Mostly because finally, I have a nice shelf to put them on instead of them having to sit in the same dusty tupperware bin I've had since I moved). I'd more advise to wait until you see actual signs that a game is coming out before you drop the hammer on that, tends to work out better that way then just going ape and "Instant buy" just because a flashy trailer with zero gameplay showed up.

Even the trailers that have come out have been incredibly short and shown concept art rather than any gameplay or even anything cinematic. Those two, they were effectively announced *when development started*, and both have 5 years of development. Modern games frequently and typicallt take 5-9 years to develop; so we're only now entering the window of when we'd expect to see an initial announcement.

  • I swear, some game companies take a cue from Hollywood, and do what is called "IP guarding." The company doesn't intend to release a new game in that IP ever again, but they regularly make just enough noise so that, legally, they can renew/hold onto that IP, so they can sue anyone who makes something similar. I first heard the term "IP guarding" from an interview given by a retired Hollywood exec. He said the movie industry does something like that all the time -- a company or individual buys up an existing script, and then just sit on it, doing nothing with it. Then the owner of the script can sue anyone who tries to do anything even remotely similar. The defendant doesn't need negative PR, so 9 out of 10 times, the defendant is happy to settle out of court, hush-hush.

    @gamerboy6787@gamerboy678710 күн бұрын
    • I don't think that's the case. Generally, IP guarding requires that you actually release something. Just announcing intent to do something with it isn't a firm protection. Plus, several of the examples here have no worries about a publisher hiring on a different studio - Star Citizen and Hollow Knight aren't IP that will expire away from the current holders. IP Guarding is for when you have a major bit of IP and want to work with it, but the licensor has stipulated that it must be used by X date. That technically could be true of the Star Wars and Metroid entries here, but both seem to be showing genuine attempts at development that don't work, after which the publisher moves on to a different dev team.

The joke here is that there's a long window between sequels in this franchise. Did you get that? I know it can be complicated, there were two parts to it after all. Let me recap. The first part of the statement modified the second part. The phrase "going by previous development cycles" means the second part of the statement is based on the premise of that first part. • grim as it's looking, hearing that the KotOR remake was taken away from Aspyr like a cookie being taken away from a child that didn't finish their homework is such a relief in the wake of the Battlefront bundle debacle. Seeing Embracer set a studio and IP free instead of just throwing it into the meat grinder with the rest is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. That was the game that taught me to love video games as a medium, as a story-telling machine. I so desperately hope the remake comes out, and sticks the landing. Edit: oh jeez VtMB2....... that first trailer hyped me up so much I nearly pre-ordered on the spot. Glad I didn't. The recent gameplay reveal was so discouraging, and the dislike ratio speaks for itself. A friend of mine recently streamed her first playthrough of the OG and it really just hit a certain kind of way how special that game was, despite the early-2000s jank and rushed ending.

What would have originally been a proper sequel to VtMB with a fish out of water newly turned vampire has now been morphed into the vampire equivalent of the Sole Survivor from Fallout 4. Now instead of being an underpowered newbie who has to learn all about the Masquerade you're instead a super powerful antidiluvian, complete with wish fulfillment powers too. They've been quoted saying things along the lines of wanting the game to feel like a superhero game with the level of power fantasy that goes with that. Personally as someone who was a fan of VtMB I don't have high hopes for the game even if it does come out. Not only do I think The Chinese Room are out of their depth making something with actual combat, but I also don't agree with the direction they're taking the game. Vampire the Masquerade isn't fucking Blade. You're not supposed to be some super badass capable of easily killing everyone you come across. The whole point of VtM is that even when you die shit stays the same, more or less and that the true struggle is to keep a hold of your humanity before that light gets snuffed out by The Beast entirely.

  • I don't think Silksong is "Development Hell" exactly, just that they're not rushing it and are a small indie team, so it's taking a while to finish. Taking their time is good, because with how great Hollow Knight was, I'm not sure anything else they follow it up with _could_ live up to that, so we fans all have unrealistically high expectations for it. They don't need to rush it out because of how well Hollow Knight has done, so they can take their time. I'd personally rather wait for it to be fully finished (and for my expectations to become more reasonable) before playing the sequel, but I'm not one of the fans who's made any predictions. I've avoided what trailers they've released about it so far, as I want to go into it as blind as possible when it's done. Statistically speaking, it's common for the third game in a franchise to be the best one for a super long time anyway... (aLttP, SMB3, MegaMan 3, S3&K, etc...) This is in part because after two games people tend to have better expectations, and because by that point the team usually knows well what they're doing with the series.

  • Star Citizen's development timeline is truly an impressive failure: *It is now only 2 years from overtaking Duke Nukem Forever's development length. *Over $670 million has been raised to fund it. That's enough to make both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. *The entire DCEU came into being and was finished before SC was released. *The US will likely have had at least 4 presidential elections before SC releases. *The UK left the EU, had its monarch died of old age and will have likely changed PMs five times before SC releases. *Fredrik Knudsen of Down the Rabbit Hole released a video in 2016 discussing SC's protracted development. 2016 is now further away from today than it is from the start of SC's development.

  • I get why everyone went to Luke first when Andy said "high-profile departures", Luke will be sorely missed! But my gamer-heart was immediately cleaved in twain being reminded that the rich capitalist d**kheads who bought into Disco Elysium makers ZA/UM ran off the best members of the original team before they could make a SINGLE new thing for that universe. Poetic, I suppose, considering the game's themes and ideologies, but that only served to make it more devastating. Rarely have I wished the Simpsons "restart the USSR" button in Lenin's mausoleum was real moreso than after hesring that news.
