In this weeks video me and Phoebe send Jack to a marriage market in the hopes to find Phoebe her 'Mr right'. We learn more about the marriage market in Shanghai and the dating scene in China.
*Note that this video was filmed in November and since then the covid regulations have changed drastically in China. But at the time we were in quarantine which is why Jack is exploring on his own.

  • It’s true, single women above 30 are called Sheng Nu (leftover women). However there is an equally unflattering term for single men unable to marry; they are called Guang Gun (bare branch). The term « bare branch » was chosen since they are unable to contribute to the 'branches' of the family tree/ lineage. They are unable to wed, because of a lack of money or good enough employment. 70% of Chinese women said in a poll that they are not willing to consider a man for marriage if he does not own an appartement. It’s not that Chinese society discriminates against women and privileges men. Both are discriminated, but just in different ways.

    • There is also a male version ShengNan, so it's not true that it's only for females. Also "sheng" is chosen as a pun as it sounds like the character for "saint", so it's kinda tongue-in-cheek meaning they are pure, but translations only selectively convey the "leftover" meaning, making it sound offensive

  • The fact that this is almost an Ad for Pheobe is amazing. I love that you and Jack did this for her. I hope she finds her perfect partner and I know having kids is important but remember it doesn't make you any more or less of a family with your partner. Family is what you make of it.   • i accidentally walked into a marriage market like this in chongqing a few years ago. it was quite an eye-opening experience for me. there are ladies like phoebe in here also. i know of two ladies, one is a chartered account and one is a manager in a govt ministry, somehow they are still single. i wish phoebe good fortune to find the right guy. love from canada.

  • She’s a beautiful woman and it really sad society see her as a leftover at 30 😢 in the UK she’s wildly accepted.   • Yes I think this is a lovely thing you guys did for Phoebe and how Jack was talking about her speaks volumes- really bigging her up. I'm 36 and single. 3/4 years ago I didn't feel like I was as I put it 'stale leftovers' that have been left on the shelf...but now I am starting to. Men in their 30's (and even 40's) have the pick of women much younger. It's definitely a lot harder to meet men in your 30's! Something I wish someone had told me earlier arghhhhaha

  • Hmmm... interesting topic and content! 🤔 Now it is clear and I understand more the idea of their Marriage Market. I think the term Sheng Nu (leftover women) is literally sounds so offensive. Per research, Shengnan is the term for "leftover men'. Kudos to Phoebe! She is one of the Modern Chinese women who I think is a smart, indepent and successful. 😊 Don't mind that 'Sheng Nu' stuff, the age, the pressure, etc. You deserve all the love and hope you can find your perfect match soon! ❤ Thanks again for this interesting video, Jack and Nico!   • There is a bit of cultural cuteness got lost in translation. In Chinese, the word "剩女" sounds exactly same as the other word "圣女". You already know the meaning of the first. The second word means "Saint" or "Virgin". There it is.

  • Here in Canada we look for love , it has nothing to do with kids well some do . I married for love we don't have kids and I glad of that . If you marry just because you want kids, I think many problems come your way !

  • It's usually off putting if you start looking for a companion listing what you own. "Beijing account, 3 bedroom, 2 car, worked in a top enterprise" can easily be considered as bragging and as lack of modesty. Also, looking for a partner that has Masters or above ...basically, without consideration you rule out enormous amount of potential candidates. I wonder, do these people look for harmonious relationship or someone to compete with?

    • Housing and vehicle ownership is really important in China when it comes to relationships, and people will definitely ask about it and put it into consideration. Also, the way these things are setup is similar to a resume where you actually want to flaunt your accomplishments and not be modest.

  • To be honest, I don't like the translation "Marriage Markets". People are here to exchange information in order to find good marriage matches. There are no monetary transactions at all. Why not use "Marriage Corners", a more direct translation from the original name in Chinese?

  • In my culture (middle eastern, Jewish) both guys and gals (and non-binary pals!) are pressured from a very young age for marraige and children. We don't really have a term for over-30 and unmarried, but you're definitely judged for it, regardless of gender.   • Yoo women can get pregnante even after 40. But the chances continue to decrease until they hit 50. Then its really rare but not impossible. Also it depends from person to another due to puberty age and other health factors. Just wanted to clarify this point. 30 seems like a peak age, from 20 to 40 its the golden interval for women. And for men its like from 25 to 45
