Chasing Urban Giants w/ Creek Kings | HUNTR Podcast

In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we rope in Zak & Justin of Creek Kings from Columbus, Ohio to discuss what it's like chasing giant bucks in urban areas. While we spend a lot of time hunting our farms in Ohio, the strategies and practices are much different in urban areas outside of the city. We're constantly working on property & habitat management projects trying to grow big deer to give us the best chance at a trophy animal. For people like Zak & Justin, they're knocking from door to door asking for permission pieces with the same end goal in mind. Public land hunting has blown up over the last few years, and it's not easy to gain access to these properties.
Enjoy this episode as "The Creek Kings" share their experience diving into the public land fad, and the crazy stories of the giant bucks that come with it.

  • I started hunting urban bucks 23 years ago. In the last 4 years, there’s not a thicket/wood plot/easement without a camera in it I hunted a small piece for 12 years and never saw a soul. Last season opening day I had 4 people walk in on me. Thanks Seek One Lol

  • I’ve watched the last few podcasts and you’ve guys brought up baiting quite a bit. I feel that there are certain areas in Ohio where it would drastically drop off in deer killed if it were illegal. Gotta remember there’s a ton of corn fields in Ohio as well. Even when farmers pick the corn they miss some in the field. So in a sense isn’t that one huge bait field regardless of the fact that is way more expensive of a food plot. But there are areas in the field where corn misses the trailer or spills everywhere and the deer find that. Truth is if it’s legal people are going to utilize it whether it’s to kill a monster buck or does for meat in the freezer. I get where your coming from but that’s kinda my thoughts.

Usually when you re-ask they will give you Whitetail permission pretty easily. Nowhere else will you run into people you would swear are from the deep hills of WV and they live in the Allegheny valley literally in the shadow of the city lol. Only in western pennsyltucky…

  • Punishments for trespassing should be more significant than what they are now currently and I know that is a state by state rule but why is it not a harsher penalty because you guys know if someone rips through your property on a side by side or someone walks around your 100 acres in the middle of October there goes any pattern you had on a buck for two weeks minimum or maybe that entire season!

  • You mentioned that albino deer being 8 or so years old. I just went up north to clear trails and hand stands two weeks ago and my cousin told me about an albino doe that is up there that is about 12-15 yrs old. If that's true or not I don't know but before I started hunting about 10 yrs ago I remember hearing about an albino deer up there. She said they can't even barely hunt their 10 acres bc that albino deer is around and just pushes all the other deer out when she's around. Just thought it was ironic how the age is so high on both those deer.

  • In terms of the "would you rather have a clean miss or a bad hit"...I know I'm in the minority but dude. Wounding a deer tears me up emotionally. When I was about 11, I was hunting in the Stand with my dad. He shot this small buck with his bow... didn't kill the deer, shot it 2 more times.. left for a bit. Came back. The deer had pulled the arrow out. Any was still alive. (In hindsight, he shot an unturned fixed blade that kept hitting the shoulder blade when he was down). Finally got a good shot on it and it died.. seeing an animal you have so much respect for suffer due to an error on your end. Sucks. I think I was crying over it and my Dad thought I would never hunt again. I feel relief if it's a clean miss. Nothing feels worse than tracking a deer for days, and coming up empty. But. The deer deserves you exhausting everything including bow setup, searching, all of it.
