100 Words You Say Wrong (Common pronunciation mistakes in English)

2023 ж. 4 Мау.
272 611 Рет қаралды

Here are 100 words that people often say wrong in English. Do you make any of these common pronunciation mistakes?
English pronunciation is a real challenge for people learning English, because the spelling is so irregular. Just think of all those silent letters...
If you sometimes say these words incorrectly, don't worry - you're not alone! It is very common to mispronounce these words.
Please note:
When I say "British English/pronunciation", I'm referring to RP (received pronunciation). When I say "American English/pronunciation", I'm referring to General American. Obviously there are many other English accents and dialects, but it's impractical to look at all of them in a video like this.

  • Hi Max, glad to see you back again. I missed your lessons. One thing that is very contraintuitive in English pronunciation is the way how words with many syllabels are pronounced, like the examples you had in your video: mischievous, photography, thermometer. I would find it very helpful if you could prepare a lesson with such words. I'm sure, I pronounce most of them wrong.

  • It would have been good to mention 'area' next to 'idea' :) Other examples that come to mind: corps/corpse, coup (d'état), finite/infinite. In general, people whose native language applies stress mostly on penultimate syllable tend to apply it the same way while speaking English, so they would stress all these words incorrectly: attribute, attributed, request, response. This holds true especially in tech. Myself, I usually forget where to stress longer words, such as 'administrative', and need to double-check.

  • Just discovered you, you're great! I've always been fascinated not only by UK vs. American pronunciations, but reginal accents in countries. Take "business" that you covered. In the Deep South of the US, it may even be called "bidness." I was born and grew up in the Mid-Atlantic of the US, which is pretty much known for having little accent compared to the rest of the US. Anyway, darn those English with their silent letters, can you all Crownsters just clean them up by removing them to help the non-native speakers :)

  • Excellent video! I'm familiar with all those IPA symbols so this was fun to watch. On a related topic, a local radio host in here San Diego had a long-standing show called "A Way With Words" where people could call in and talk about their local dialects and so forth, and eventually the host wrote a book with the title "There Is No Zoo in Zoology" which I instantly had to have, being constantly irritated by the dumb mistakes so many people made so often. In the above case, the author pointed out that "Zoology" is a combination of "Zoa," the Greek word for "Life" and "ology" meaning "the study of" as you probably know, but when even employees at our famous Zoo would make this mistake I had to do something about it! So I bought this book and several others, including "Is There a Cow in Moscow?" (no, because the Russian is Mosk-VA), "What in the Word?" and "The Accidents of Style." Sadly, the author, Charles Harrington Elster, passed away a while back, but these books are still available on line and I had no problems acquiring them if you're interested. My name is Jeff Wells and I'm guilty of being an especially annoying Grammar Nazi online, so be careful what you write ;)

  • Dear Teacher Max, You have a gift from God to teach. It is a great jewel you received from our Father. If I have a teacher like you with for private lessons, I would not need an IPA alphabet. But as I am alone in my country, I am not accompanied by English native speakers, IPA is absolutely the must tool in studying English.

  • I like this video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

Au fait, je voulais te dire que j'ai eu l'occasion de voir la vidéo où tu parles français et je dois dire que j'ai été agréablement surpris par la perfection de ton français et entre autre l'accent, chose difficile à maitriser surtout pour les natifs anglais. So I wonder if you’re still practicing Molière’s language because if I’m not mistaken you have a saying that says... If you don’t use it, you lose it

    • @@EnglishwithMax I agree that it is nice to have the comparison between British and American English. I am a proponent of students choosing one over the other before beginning to learn English and never going to the other so as to not confuse themselves or anyone else. I wish I could do the British English well enough to give both examples but I am afraid I would butcher the British English unfortunately and never on purpose. I like the sound of British English but am all American in speech! Thanks for your videos!

  • I am an American and I pronounce words like they do in the Uk. That is how I was taught. During spelling class either a teacher thought I was being a smart ass or gave me extra points. Like Colour/Color. We have to remember if your an American and your family cane from the UK then we are family. Lots of Americans still sound like they are from the UK.
