    • @@binaryvoid0101, an even scary scenario would be an armed teacher who snaps from some personal or mental issues and unloads on a classroom full of kids. Now a potential school shooter has access to guns, teachers have access to guns and the only people without guns are - you guessed it - students! New legislation would predictably be about extending that opportunity to students and hopefully nothing goes wrong with that.

  • Tennessee lawmakers approved a bill that would permit teachers to carry guns in schools. The bill, known as HB 1380/SB 0786, passed the state House with a vote of 82-15 and the Senate with a vote of 27-6. If signed into law, it would allow certain school employees to carry concealed firearms on school grounds. The bill aims to enhance school safety and protect students by allowing trained staff members to respond to potential threats. Under the proposed legislation, teachers and other school personnel who choose to carry firearms would have to complete a 40-hour training course provided by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Supporters of the bill argue that it would provide an additional layer of security and reduce response time in case of an active shooter situation. They believe that armed teachers could act as a deterrent to potential attackers and potentially save lives. Moreover, proponents emphasize that the decision to carry a firearm would be voluntary for teachers, and local school districts would have the final say in implementing the policy. However, opponents of the bill express concerns regarding the potential risks associated with arming teachers. They argue that introducing more guns into schools may increase the likelihood of accidents, unintentional shootings, or escalation of violence. Critics also question the effectiveness of arming teachers in preventing school shootings, citing research that suggests other approaches like improved mental health services or stricter gun control laws would be more effective in ensuring school safety. The bill will now be sent to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee for consideration. If he signs it into law, Tennessee will join a handful of other states that allow teachers to carry firearms on school grounds.

    @csaracho2009@csaracho200925 күн бұрын
    • The bill does not require teachers to carry a gun. The bill sponsor explained that he expected no more than about 3 percent of teachers to apply for authorization to carry a gun under this bill, and that the number of teachers who complete the screening and training to be considerably less than that. If a teacher volunteers for this program and completes the screening and training - at their own expense - they will assume personal liability for everything they do with the gun. This is why the expected number of teachers to apply for the program is so low. The bill requires strict control of who knows which teachers are armed, so that a potential school shooter can be deterred by not being able to plan for which teacher will be an armed threat to the school shooter.

They have also opposed home schooling, non-lethal weapons, locking up "unruly students", various civic programs, and a long list of other 'solutions'. Honestly, by this point we would be happy if those people would just move to another state, but some of them don't even live here. Last summer, a few of them got angry enough at the state legislature that they forgot that they were pretending to live here and started shouting that they were glad they didn't live in this state. The state legislature already knew this, because some members of the legislature stated before the summer session started that since other states were not having a summer session of their legislatures, our summer session was just going to turn into a circus of news media and people from other states protesting in an attempt to draw the news media's attention.

Their chant last summer was that the legislature was trying to turn schools into prisons. China doesn't allow ownership of guns, but they have had a large enough number of attacks on schools with knives and other weapons, that some Chinese schools have made videos to show parents the training that their teachers and staff have been given to respond to an attacker with a knife, so simply banning guns is not a solution, even if it was possible to ban and confiscate all the guns in the US - it is logistically impossible to confiscate all of the guns, due to the large number of guns in the US, among other reasons.

I saw a report the other day that stated only 16 of the 50 states have laws completely prohibiting teachers from being armed. The main thing preventing the arming of teachers in states other than those 16 states, is that a federal law passed in the 1990s requires that a state pass a law authorizing teachers to be armed, before teachers can be armed in schools. Prior to that federal law being passed, it was mainly up to the local governments to decide whether or not teachers could have guns at school. In the 1980s, high schools in Tennessee allowed students to have guns in their vehicles in the student parking lots, because it was accepted that some students would be hunting before or after school. This controversy wasn't a controversy, here, until the federal government started placing restrictions on guns at schools.
