  • 1:06 why is the responsibility always on the defender? Because the defender by the nature of the game is the one trying to make contact, the attacker is trying to avoid it. The one seeking contact is the one responsible for the nature of the contact.

  • its an avoidable accident. like getting in a car drunk and then saying its an accident when you hit someone. defenders jobs is to avoid contact with the head. All May had to do was drop his height to make shoulder contact with the chest and the "accident" never happens.

  • Here's a clue for these 2. It's poor technique. They are taught things that are dangerous. If you're raising up into contact, you're exponentially more likely to make contact with the head. That makes it, by definition DANGEROUS. It's careless and dangerous. If he did NOT raise up into the contact, there would have been no head clash. The onus is on the defender, because it's ON THEM TO ENSURE THEY DON'T TACKLE ABOVE THE SHOULDERS. THAT is why it's on the defenders. A ball carrier can't control whether the defender strays high and tackles them above the shoulder unless they're ducking into the contact putting themselves in danger. If the defender tackled with better technique, these collisions would be SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. It's that simple. End of story.

  • All i want to say is... I hope Walshy/May gets better soon and a fast recovery. Duty of care is ensuring they receive all the support they need to overcome their injuries. Supporting them with rehabilitation is far more important. If you or i were to make a mistake, we would learn from it . Our elders are the ones we turn to for advice and support outside of NRL . The NRL needs to ensure that it is upheld on the inside. The emotional/physiological merry go round would be immense for any player at NRL level. I do believe that the Broncos would be the best team in the competition to uphold player's care, but some of the not so financially capable teams may need help in this area .

When he's careless and things go wrong you can't complain about the consequences. Once Reece Walsh left the field the game was over. Keep that same enegy if sides start targeting the golden boy out at Penrith every week.

  • Finally people with common sense. Graham Anneseley is a complete fool, what is this “jurisdiction of care” on the defender, this is contact sport mate, players don’t mean to hurt or injure the opposition player when making a tackle but things go wrong, people get hurt, it’s a physical game, it always has been for the past century, injuries and accidents are apart of this game and the athletes who play this game know that, they put their bodies on the line for there team week in week out. By that logic of the defender having care on the attacking player is like telling someone, here’s a gun, shoot this person in the head but don’t kill him, that’s how stupid it sounds. The only reason this blew up to extraordinary lengths is because it happened on NRL’s poster boy Walsh and he brings in tickets and merchandise sales, if it was on a B-list player no one would give a rats.

The defender needs to show mitigation when going into a tackle like that and if they don’t and there’s a bad clash like this then the defender is punished for being reckless. League die hards won’t agree much less want to align with Union but in my opinion Union has got this right. It’s on the defender to at least try and bend or go lower into the tackle because if they’re upright like May was there’s only one way that can end.

Worst injury over that time for any of us was a fractured cheekbone. A few broken noses but no broken bones. Playing in the top grades. That was in the 60's - 80's. Play hard or don't run out. What happened to Reece was an accident. No ill intent, not like Les Boyd's shot on Daryl Brohman. That was criminal. The dividing line is mala fides or ill intent. Duty of care is subjective and now in Union the refs have the new rules to protect all players with reviews looking at the bio-mechanics of the contact. League will have problems with this because that's every set of six tackles could need reviews. Impractical.

  • I have heard “bend at the waist” in reference to potential foul play before. During rugby union internationals, which I am guilty of watching. Don’t let the meddlers import the ridiculous conclusions of union to Rugby League, right when the NRL is getting floods of union to Rugby League converts worldwide.

  • This one's blown up because he got a serious visible injury compared to the others. How can't use figure out the difference? 🤦🏾‍♂️ duty of care is on the defender since they have more control over their actions while defending. There was already a precedent set last year about head collisions being careless and needing more duty of care while defending. Did last season just skip Gus and Gals memories.

  • Because he jump into the tackle gal, Gus take off your Panthers jersey. From U/7's you learn to tackle around the hips, careless everyday of the week. NRL players take more dives than soccer players these days , just like that manly try.
