Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.
I love how Iwan wears garden gloves to transplant the flowers into pots while Carissa gets her hands into the soil. And on the flip side, Carissa eats her egg sandwich with a knife and fork while Iwan uses his hands to savor the meal. So adorable, you two complement each other perfectly. I love the music Carissa. So zen being in your gardens.

This year there seems to be a really big change in your homestead. It just seems it has come together naturally but I know it’s all from your hard work. My first time seeing you was a few years back when Bee and Theo visited you. Your garden was tiny and I was very concerned about your soil health. I’ve been following you since then and the changes you have made in this time have been fantastic. Your soil looks so much richer and your plants are beautiful. Love the new deck. How fun! Seeing all your pallets, have you seen the vertical gardens made with pallets? Place a heavy duty garbage bags or burlap bags inside the pallet and fill with gardening soil. Then, between the slats you poke holes in the bag and plant herbs or succulents or strawberries, etc. The possibilities are your imagination.

Just adding what we call a Black eyed Susan creeper and you have all of my favourite plants. The creeper has a yellow or orange flower with a very dark central area.👍

Congratulations on 51,000. I can see "Uncle Ned's" pallet skills have rubbed off on you. The camera work, Music, Job Inspectors, Chef and Gardener were all in top form. I love my little airfryer, Iwan, but loathe cleaning it. Unplug it, pull the drawer out and look at the fan and element area. If you haven't been cleaning it regularly, I can assure you it is obnoxious to clean...... your little deck looks lovely and I hope your Kiwi fruit provide an abundance of fruit and shade. As a New Zealander, I can tell you they need plenty of room and sturdy supports. The growers recommend metal, but this might be a use for some of your mimosa trunks. I love your gardens Carissa.

Two things - water your seedlings so they are saturated before planting. If their roots are really wet, it doesn't matter if you water the soil at planting. Dry roots don't help with the shock of transplanting. Thing 2- I take my salad spinner into the garden with me when I go to pick herbs or greens. I have it half full of water so they don't wilt, and they get washed at the same time. Lift the inner basket out and the water drains off and gets emptied in pot plants. Then I spin the leaves dry. I love my salad spinner pretty much best of all my kitchen gadgets. ❤ your work each week ❤

We also need more shade areas (Bulgaria) and are planning a covered area with vines and wisteria growing over, I love how cosy the closed in side makes it. Speaking from experience here 😉the grass is going to grow up through the pallets. Perhaps some rugs will work to block the light, seen lots of nice outdoor ones in places like Jysk and IKEA. But in case you’re planning on making more decking or extending, definitely put something under the pallets to exclude light.

I think that with the grass strumming if you sparsely spread it over the old chicken yard that maybe with some rain it will allow it to root and come back faster so that you can rotate them more often. I absolutely love your channel Thank you for sharing

It’s looking fantastic. To help you so you don’t have to water these pots nearly every day when it starts getting hot, mix part sand, part garden soil, part compost because as the soil mix, because the thing about compost is that it dries out super quickly, the garden soil will help keep moisture for much longer meaning less work watering and less use of water x

I copied the locals here in Greece and planted a mulberry tree for shade in my hot garden. That plus a crepe myrtle and a jacaranda and within three years I have a lovely cool escape. Plus the mulberries are delicious!

I was the same re air fryers until I was given a small one, it's great for so many things - even managed an apple crumble, so much quicker & cheaper than the regular oven. Your home is beautiful, takes a few years to get on top of things & you're really getting there now. Love the shade idea, look forward to seeing how you add to it. 🏴❤🏴
