  • Reason to get a weim: they're the best dogs ever.

  • I had a Weimaraner save my life when I was a kid. I was playing with the kid next door at my grandparents house. We were running across the other neighbors yard when both of their German Shepherds came after us. I was running for a tree when out of no where this gray streak came across and took out the GS that was inches away from biting me. The kids Great Dane took out the other GS. I hold a deep debt to that dog. I later purchased one when I was 19. Great dog, my mom ended up "stealing" the dog from me. He made a great lap dog for her, he would climb up in the recliner with my mom laying across her lap. The breed still holds a special place in my heart.

  • The last two years I lived in Scotland, I worked with a beautiful Weimaraner who had some separation anxiety. She was so smart, but needed more exercise than her owner could provide. I grew to love the breed. And especially to love that dog.

  • A very good description, but you forget to mention, that the Weimaraner was always also used/ bred for protection. We call it Mannschaerfe.

  • Wonderful video! My Weimerarner has been acting out since being left alone more often and this has given me some great ideas for how to stimulate her. She spends most of the day sleeping or hunting lizards and squirrels when she’s with me

  • My weim/pit is the most chill dog ever. She gets a lot of exercise through hikes and beach time. She doesn't chase birds or any other animals. She just observes. She's so amzing!! But yeah, she does have mild separation anxiety but we're working on it and she is doing great for a weeks of training. She's soooo smart and funny.

  • As a German hunter, I have to say that is the best description of a Weimaraner I have heard so far. Especially as far as the hunting background is concerned. Will has done great research there. People either love to either only point out the history as big game hunter or only the present use as bird dog in most of the world, when it is actually the combination of those two which sets apart the Weimaraner from many other pointing breeds: while being a pointer and retriever in most of the world nowadays, the Weimaraner has retained what we call a certain "hardness", drive to actually kill it's prey. Here in Germany they are also becoming more and more boar hunters again, and doing a good job at it. I also like that Will points out that the best kind of job to give a hunting dog is actually hunting. I think the Weimaraners' downfall is their good looks: People want to buy a silver dog, but forget that they actually buy a hunting dog. Now there are some non-hunting lines out there, and I won't complain if anyone gets a Weim from those, but if a non-hunter gets a Weimaraner from hunting lines just because of the looks, that is bordering on stupidity.

    • Would playing fetch satisfy a Weimaraner from a non-hunting line?

      @loudloveen@loudloveen9 ай бұрын
    • @@loudloveen Playing fetch is a great idea for any dog. I only know one Weimaraner from non-hunting lines and she is indeed mainly satisfied by fetch and obedience. You can try if your dog likes frisbee. Catching the frisbee out of the air gives dogs an additional mental and physical challenge I think; at least my dog will play with a frisbee for an unlimited time, while a ball at some point gets boring or work for her. Great to see that you are thinking about how to give your dog what it needs! 💪

  • My family dog growing up was a cross between Weimaraner and Dalmatian. She was the sweetest but had a very loud bark sometimes. I miss her a lot still.

  • I have never personally met a bad weimaraner. That said pay careful attention to what he says about them being a velcro dog, having aggressive tendencies when not properly worked. There's also a fellow dog dominance factor that you need to understand. One of my instructors in vet tech school told a story about a sweet Weimaraner and they had had a second one with it. The second one died I'm not sure I remember why but they brought in a new puppy. That change in the household ultimately led to the dog eviscerating the male owner. That obviously is not ideal. So they definitely need training and exercise to deal with their personality traits and if introducing a new puppy that takes attention away, you slowly need to work with that. Now the owner ended up surviving but it obviously caused issues in the household after that.

  • Five years ago we thought that after three daschunds a weim would be easy. What were we wrong. After three couches and two armchairs, we were able to take in one of here sisters. And all is well since then. They do everything together. And if need be give each other peace. They are our best friends, and great guard dogs. I always feel safe with them around. The one we took in later was never allowed on the couch. And now she always lies ont the couch, and always by my wife.
