Some men and women decide to spend their lives together despite knowing from the outset that they have almost nothing in common. More and more South Korean men are finding their wives abroad, be it in Vietnam, China or Thailand. These multicultural partnerships are a response to a national crisis: South Korea's low marriage rate. Our reporters travelled to Vietnam and South Korea to investigate.

    • @@hikari9433That is why they divorce so much. They never imagine reality. They imagine K drama fantasy. The table turns and the men often find themselves left with kids, old parents of his own and a farm to take care of when their Vietnamese wife left. The lesson is, stay single if you are not ready to treat the other equally as a human yourself. Hire a helper or a caregiver at a fair rate instead of dumping all those duties on one person like a slave.

    • @@user-yj6bx7md5l you think the women don't have requirements of their own ? The Korean correspondent said it herself, some Vietnamese women change their mind or turn down men they believe don't meet their standards. Being equal in a relationship doesn't mean having the exact same roles. In a family, if one partner is working full time, of course the other one who stays at home is expected to take care of most of the house and the family. If the men also expected their wives to have a job and then come home and take care of stuffs, then you could've say they want a servant, but here it is not the case. Why is that when women are expected to take care of house duties we call it slavery but when men are expected to work brutal hours to actually pay for the food, the bills, water, the kids school, etc. No one pay attention ? That double standard is also what creates divorces.

  • If the men is looking for future wife to help in farming, do housework & taking care of old parents, they aren't looking for wife, more like looking for maid.

    • As the news report observed, there is an expectation on the part of the Vietnamese women that the marriage will result in economic support for their aging parents. In other words, the Korean men will be working not only to provide for their own wife (who will probably face some limitations on her own ability to work and contribute financially) and children, and to support their own aging parents in Korea, they will also take on the economic burden of supporting their wive’s parents in Vietnam. Many of these men will be worked into the grave.

    • It's like saying : "if women are looking for a future wife to go to work, bring the money, pay the bills, they aren't looking for a husband, more like looking for an ATM." Everyone in a family have a role to fill in order for things to run smoothly. if the man is working, the woman mostly take care of the house and the family. if both are working, both take care of housework and family. If the woman is the one who works then the man take care of the family. Love is not enough to keep a marriage afloat.

  • Some critical information that you did not include was the surplus male population in South Korea. Government policies in the 1980s and 1990s was to encourage families to have a only one child and the cost of raising children had mushroomed as a result of urbanization and the need to secure competitive higher education. Also, due to Confucian values that required a son to continue the family, perform ancestral rites and provide economic support for retired parents, there was a strong preference for male children. Despite laws intended to prevent it, the result was sex selective abortions with many female pregnancies being terminated. This created a huge disparity between the number of male versus female births ( 108.6 male per 1 female birth in 1985 and 112.5 in 1990). Those babies are now adults and we are seeing the end result in the inability of many Korean men to find a Korean wife. When I was working there 22 years ago this was correctly predicted to be a serious societal problem in the future. The only possible solution to the male surplus is foreign wives. It does not help that South Korea does not permit dual citizenship. One thing that would help would be for the South Korean government to stop removing Korean citizenship from Koreans who settle abroad and obtain citizenship in their country of residence, which effectively limits the ability of their daughter’s to participate in the marriage pool in their ethnic homeland. We have a huge Korean population here in Canada, including my wife and daughter, and it is a major impediment and stress that they are forced to either abandon all ties with home or live forever as aliens in their country of residence.

There is no rational reason why I would abandon one citizenship for another. When I was a youth one of my teacher’s told me that citizenship is the last form of slavery, but it was many years before I fully understood what he meant, and I wholeheartedly agree with him. Looking back at my wife’s village a lot of the women would marry men from China, or other first world countries. The money that came from the marriage has brought their parents new houses, cars and more land. It’s now well known that women bring in money than the boys who struggle making a living in a mostly poor country. As for the women, if you are beautiful, rich men will flock to you and give you what ever you want. It’s also common for women to accept being a mistress to an already married man. Very common in Asia especially in China.

  • Comment as a South Korean woman. It's a bizarre marriage on the surface, but it's actually a pretty reasonable marriage. Many Korean women choose to live in the city or to be career women, or just live alone. This is the biggest reason why men in rural Korea are delaying marriage. However, in the Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese cases above, the majority of women have experienced rural life so are not opposed to it, and they need to support their families back home. So, in my opinion, what Korea needs is not to portray their decisions as unfortunate and to passively consider their choices, but rather to respect their decisions, wish them well, and help them integrate into society. In addition, there is a growing trend of Korean women marrying men from these countries.

  • I just watched a documentary last night about something similar on the other side of the world: men from North America seeking brides from Eastern Europe. It seems to be a trend going on in a lot of places. In countries where women have more lifestyle options outside of marriage and motherhood, either they are only interested in getting married/having children under certain conditions or they are opting out altogether. The men get frustrated by this so they go to countries where women are more financially vulnerable or have fewer options. And the usual recurring theme is these men want to be able to pick a bride the same way they'd pick out a car. No real attempt at getting to know one another and making sure they're even compatible. Most of the time they don't even care that they don't have a language in common. Why would you legally attach yourself to someone you can't even communicate with?? The foreign potential brides are looking for a better life and the men are looking for a live in maid that they don't have to pay for.

In Vietnam, during my parents era, it is customary especially in the more traditional rural areas, for the girl to go and live with her husband's family. She is expected to do a lot of the chores around the house, like cooking, washing etc.., to serve everyone, to give births... life was tough for the young bride.
