See a sculptor recreate Antonio Canova’s “Venus” step-by-step, from clay to marble | Time Lapse Art
Master sculptor Fred X. Brownstein recreates Antonio Canova’s sculpture “Venus” using Canova’s unique 200-year-old techniques over the course of 6 months.
How does Brownstein go from a foot-high clay sketch to a near-identical marble copy of one of Antonio Canova’s most famous sculptures? Watch this behind-the-scenes time lapse using Canova’s marble sculpting process to find out!
Brownstein uses his hands and small, wooden tools to create a rough clay sketch model called a bozzetti. He then moves on to a full-scale modelli that is cast in plaster, creating a hollow mold. This mold, in turn, serves as the basis for a refined plaster model that’s copied into a marble version where Fred makes the final touches.
Where Canova had a workshop with assistants, Fred did all of the sculpting himself!
See Canova’s clay, plaster, and marble sculptures, including "Venus", in the Canova: Sketching in Clay exhibition open June 11 - October 9, 2023 at the National Gallery of Art: www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2023/...

I thought the newspaper was so funny 😂 it’s so random when I saw it
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
It never ceases surprising me how the two steps before the final sculpture are themselves pieces of art.
Indeed, but the clay would last a couple weeks, the plaster a couple centuries, while the marble will last for thousands of years. That is how we got our cultural heritage, how societies built things that would last, and amaze people so far away in time.
@@Elviloh No. You are wrong. It is not the urge to be known to the times unseen which makes humans to choose , it is their fear.
@@Elviloh That's absolutly right : the marble can resist at the centurys and more. But, I never said another thing. I just say that, for me, not for everybody, the steps are art. You see ? Not an invest made by interest because of the longevity of my buying... Just for the beauty. The finess of the lines, the curves, the grain of the material. You're probably right. I'm a poet... And, you know probably that in certain archaeological dig sites, sometimes, some clays figurines are founded, even if they are a little bit or more broken, and all the personns who work on this dig site exult... Maybe they are poets too... I'm happy. You gave me the opportunity to attempt to defend a point of view in english. But please, be cool with me, that's not my native language !
This IS amazing, magnificent, and neato frito, but my favorite part is his newspaper hat.
Learn about the hat here! kzhead.info/sun/dJiif9uMmXaOZWw/bejne.htmlsi=s1ujJOHNS-XWZHhH
It’s the standard issue Italian bricklayer/housepainter hat! I remember we all knew how to make it when we were kids.
I couldn't agree more
are you truly an artist if you don't have a newspaper hat?
Easy way to keep marble dust out of your hair and simultaneously look stylish and masterful 😉
The fact that he had to repeat the process THRICE and with three different techniques! He first sculpted it with clay using the additive method, then make a cast with plaster of paris, and then sculpt the same out of a marble slab using the subtractive method. This is absolute monk like concentration.
Plaster of Paris, not paris. It's the town.
@@eliseereclus3475 woah weird I knew about a material called plaster of paris but not about a friggin town that has Eiffel tower, right? Thanks for enlightenment.
@@eliseereclus3475s so pretentious lol
Sorry i'm new to this, but why did he have to re sculpt using marble?
@@godbatbat Clay and plaster are not durable and lack the aesthetic qualities of marble.
What a chance to have cameras, youtube, art everywhere, whenever we want, appreciate the artists labor. What a chance...
We are alive in amazing times 🙌🏾. I’m so grateful.
I think you should change your title. Instead of putting "a scupltor", you should put his actual name. Not many people check the description and putting his name in plain view seems better.
I believe they used the word "sculpture" instead of his name so that this video would advertise in the algorithm. I think they should have used both the word "sculpture" and his name in the title.
They hearted almost every other top comment except this, weird.
@@ozzyv3419 this comment is pretty new though, every other recent top comment that has been hearted is close to the date this video was released. Meaning they had a higher chance of being seen by the creator.
@@crowtheblackcat415Sort comments by newest and you will see them heartinf comments from this week.
@@ozzyv3419 ah im stupid, thank you for correcting me haha
seeing this is easy to believe sculptors falling in love with their work and asking the gods to bring them to life. so much time
I think this is one of the best artists I've ever seen!
A lifetime of study and craft in a 6 minute video, thank you Master for sharing with the world.
How amazing to see the entire process like this. It's so beautiful.
Thanks for watching!
What a privilege to be able to see this man at work. 🙏
This is the real deal! Thank you for sharing. Most people have no idea of the time and skill that goes into Mold Making and Subtractive Stone Carving. Sadly, both casting in plaster and using a point method to enlarge/transfer to stone is becoming a lost art. More exhibits and videos like this, please!
I like art work with marble. Biggest marble art's example is 'TAJ MAHAL' AGARA in India. This is so beautiful with 97% pure whiteness .
Excuse my ignorance. Why is it necessary to make a plaster mold? Couldn't the artist use the clay as a model for preparing the marble version?
The biggest problem using a clay model as his reference would be the wear and tear from constant measuring.
he makes one art to start another art, it's amazing
Love that he does this by hand... this quality of marble asks you to give up your soul... and machines can't do that.
No shortcuts, I'm in awe at the skills on display. Very impressive.
So are we!
I think that is one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched.
Staggering. Hypnotic to watch - thank you and congrats to all involved in the commission. Not least the master sculptor! I visited another Canova piece at Chatsworth in the UK recently and wondered at the practical processes behind these beautiful masterpieces. And you’ve answered so many questions, thank you!
this is mind-blowing. I thought the clay one was the start and finish 😮 this is just amazing .. so much work 👏🏻
As a professional painter I loved the sculpture study in the beginning. Its exactly how I plan out my paintings. Working out the difficult shapes like the tilt of the head before you start. Just excellent 👍
Amazing that some people can do this. And magical to see Venus coming put of the stone!
What incredible work from this gentleman, a true artist.
I love the intimacy that comes with such patience - truly beautiful.
Priceless sculpture
Not felt like this in long time.. Breathtaking
Excellent work! I enjoyed every second of this wonderful short video
Wow that was breathtaking ... I cannot believe the skill. Real art is another level.
this is so beautiful that I just burst in tears for no reason
There needs to be marble works in art for generations to come, we can't afford to lose techniques like these.
I have discovered these art videos on KZhead. Thank you to all the artists that upload these beautiful techniques for us to watch💕🎨
Saw the exhibit in person last week and am so glad this is posted to share with those not able to go in person!!
Share away!

Very talented men, beautiful sculpture art
Wow! That's a lot of work!

Thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed watching this very much, beautiful. X
Speechless…the talent and the execution, mesmerising.
Maestro de maestros, es increíble, magnífico, me encanto!
This was MESMERIZING. BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART.
This is insane, incredible! The skill, the patience, the attention to every single detail - I find it hard to fathom how people can do this, and obviously did it hundreds of years ago too.
This was amazing. Thank you for sharing this. We visited the exhibit on Saturday. It was amazing. I watched this video on-site also & was thrilled to get to see it again!
Neat to see a design go from one medium to another. Seems like there's also a lot of room for things to go wrong if not careful enough, so that takes as much patience as it does skill.
I can only imagine the intense feeling of satisfaction when a sculptor completes a marble carving.
What a skill, amazing
Huge Respect. ❤
Superb demonstration by a master sculptor!
true art in perfection
This Is Art as It Always should be
It's nice that art is still being made
somehow making me emotional. pure art it is
Muchas felicidades al Señor, un trabajo muy laborioso, se necesita mucho tiempo, y no cualquiera lo puede hacer, valioso Don tiene usted, muchos saludos!
I wanna cry looking at this .Its beyond beautiful ❤
I can only imagine the countless thousands of hours that went into mastering this craft. Humbling
Now this is what we call "art". Truly beautiful❤
Canova was a genius, and this gentleman is a Master.
Bravo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you for your existence and talent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I saw this exhibit in person and was very impressed. thank you for shedding light on Canova's process. cheers from singapore!

Beautiful sculpture, marvelously done 👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing skill.
BEAUTIFUL... AMAZING!! Thank you for sharing to the World❤
Talking as an architect this is fantastic. Working with hands, have the connection with the material, it is something that i can't describe. I would like to see more content like this!
Sir you are an amazing sculptor. Respect from the bottom of my heart.❤😊
Bravo to MASTER!!!
i love these type of art so much
Thank you! That really made my day.
Such a beautiful thing to watch.
Having just returned from visiting the ancient sites and museums of Troy, Alexander Troas, Pergamon, Assus, Ephesus, Parion, Thessaloniki, Nimes, Orange, and Tarragona, my head is still spinning from the mind-boggling amount of time, skill, craftsmanship, and resources that went into creating the millions of stones, columns, reliefs, decorative and figurative sculptures, capitals, bases, arches, temples, and pretty much everything. 😊 Seeing this process can give people an idea of just how incredibly skilled and dedicated our European ancestors were.
So informative to watch! Thank you!
Skill, patience, accuracy, determination, passion
OMG it is really labour heavy work. HUGE admiration and appreciation from me to this diligent man and his impressive art. We should also take into consideration that he was not a young man anymore, when he created these beautiful artefacts. ❤🙏❤💪💪💪👍👍👍🤩😍
Had to watch this twice. Unbelievable!
What a God-given talent. Very impressive!
Oh my! Marvelous, breathtakingly beautiful! I thank you!!!
Thank you so much for watching!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Magnifico. Thankyou for creating.
And I initially thought he was done with the first casting....he's .beyond WOW
So much more skilled, beautiful, respectable, and better than "modern art".
Que hermosa escultura y gran escultor apasionado de lo que hace muy bello
Absolutely BEAUTIFULLY captured process! 💖
Beautiful
I am in love with those sculptures 😫
This is awesome! We visited the gallery in DC today.
Glad you could see it in person!
Thank you so much, this is magical 🌷
This is AMAZING!!!
Takes a long time. Thank you for doing this🕊
The sculptor deserves a name!
Absolutely amazing
I was just at the National Gallery of Art in DC mostly admiring and studying the beauty and finer details of the terracotta and marble sculptures. So glad this video popped up. Hmmmmmmm…..
Amazing.
Mr. Fred is an amazing artist. You can see how passionate he is for this project. He threw all the problem outside the house, and just focusing on the sculpture.
She’s so patient
