The Wodaabe clan, are the Nomads of the Sahel regions of CHAD. Once a year, after the rains, the Wodaabe celebrate in the Gerewol Festival, a courtship festival that is often referred to as a young mans beauty contest, where the girls can select the most beautiful young man, for a night of romance, or, a future husband. The young men dress up, adorned with jewellery, headdresses, and full make up, to exaggerate the whiteness of their eyes and teeth, and a dress to enhance their perfect physique and heigh. The Gerewol participants can sing and dance for 3 or more days, and nights, into the early hours of the morning, flirting, and competing, often looking like they're in a strange trance that is mesmerizing to the onlooker. .... • These men are so different from what we know here in America👀 And the funny thing is, it seems like in almost every culture… Including birds and animals, the male is the one that is supposed to dress up for the woman🤔😉 As a little girl, I thought the big beautiful peacocks were surely the females strutting their stuff. But ultimately I learned that the colorful peacocks are the males strutting their stuff for the females😊Very cool 😎

I had since forgotten that picture until I saw this on KZhead and this is exactly what I saw in the National Geographic magazine all those years ago. I thought the men were beautiful back then and I still do. The only thing that threw me aback was the widening of their eyes….like they were in a trance-like state, however it does make sense why they are widening their eyes so as to showcase them to their possible future wives. • It's a fertility festival. The Wodaabe live in an environment that is very harsh. Their culture values fertility and healthy births over marital status. In the Geerewol festival, young women (even married women who have not yet become pregnant) may select from the young male competitors, and have relations with him in hopes of getting pregnant. Two lineages of the Wodaabe people people participate in the Geerewol, young women often choose men from the other tribe as their partners for the event. This seems a very simple and effective means of keeping their genetic pool richly diversified, and dealing with some fertility issues that married couples might have.
