Wodaabe: Herdsmen of the Sun

A rare example of Herzog tackling the "ethnographic" corner of the documentary genre, with wonderfully mystical results! Herdsmen of the Sun tells of the Wodaabe tribe, a nomadic African community (self-described as "the most beautiful people on earth") who annually practices a festival called Gerewol, in which females choose their mates from a lineup of super-elaborately adorned men with wild makeup, feathers and kaleidoscopic robes draping their seven-foot frames. Starting with the first scene, Herzog accentuates the ethereal nature of this rite further by layering early 20th-century recordings of opera on the soundtrack; the film's dreamlike depiction of a foreign people, very much at odds with the purist cinema vérité tradition of ethnography without adornment, is the embodiment of Herzog's own "Minnesota Declaration": that through "imagination and stylization", there can be such a thing as a poetic, ecstatic truth. Riverting, singular and totally heartfelt. Review source: tinyurl.com/7udrfh5

    • This is why the white settlers to India when it was a united people, they taught the Indian men how to treat their women and the mother in-laws to do all the work and let their sons do no work, even though men are stronger than most women. As a result, these mother-in-law's usually work themselves into the ground before their time. The mother-in-law.also taught the wives to do the same. This behaviour serves no purpose except leaving orphan children and all men which also makes no sense as mem alone cannot procuate. They even took the matter to another level by kill first born baby girls, but God is watching.

  • The first time I saw a documentary about these people, I was a little shocked by their striking appearances. But they do look beautiful. So beautiful. They become living high art when they put on their makeup and outfits! I love to look at them when they are decorated for their celebrations. They have such long willowy features. • It is worth noting that this is precisely the kind of culture jihadists in North Africa want to stamp out. In particular, the power of women in the culture and the concern for aesthetics are deemed "haram" and offensive to their version of Islam. Their "jihad" is aimed at ridding the world of cultures and cultural practices such as are seen in this film. What 400 years of the slave trade and European colonization was unable to do, the jihadists are attempting to do in one generation. They are well-armed and well-funded, through their own criminal activities and donations from the Gulf states, where elites see the destruction of traditional cultures in Africa as their historical mission.

After the Herzog part there was a clip of the "courtship festival" filmed about 10 years later (so 1989-1999...wish I could remember/source it) and it was so interesting how attitudes had changed in such a short period- everyone participating, men and women, were kinda like, "yes, we know this is seriously old-fashioned, but we have to do it because tradition."

This seems like almost a symbol for all human attraction. The female raelly does pick the male. This tribe just lets it happen in the most natural way I've seen. The men aren't all butthurt about it, they doll themselves up and the women make the choice...pretty straightforward....none of this male ego mucking things up.

Forget space travel an space stations! Take care of the Earth! Long live the Wodaabe, Fulani and ALL Indigenous Peoples! Long Live Their Lands and Cultures…and May ALL Humans realise that; "We Belong to the Earth; The Earth Does Not Belong To Us!" ( Chief Seattle.) One viewer commented;"but having a culture does not mean that it is right. some cultures are bad like this one." Wow! This is the hight of Ignorance, blind ignorance-no doubt religious fundamentalism! It is incredible how with no further education people are so often just willing to accept what is written in a old text or what a so called religious teacher ( or any teacher, scientist, person for that matter) tells them without thinking for themselves, without study, without searching for the truth, not just opinion or dogma. It is incredible to me that someone can be so ignorant they can just write off a culture and people like that! • The music choice was odd, certainly not my taste, but I don't think the director meant any harm by it. Quite the contrary, I think by using sacred music he was trying to emphasise the beauty of these people at a time when the other peoples around them living alongside them treated them terribly. Including their government. So, although artistically jarring, I don't think a bad intention was meant.

    • Herzog was using a song that epitomises a western understanding of beauty to contrast with this sense of incomprehensible other and their own conception of what is beautiful. It seems that he chose a version of Ave Maria that is unconventionally sung to highlight the subversive nature of beauty and how it is perceived. This choice of song serves to highlight what Herzog is bringing his camera against and asking the viewer to question their own understanding of grace and beauty. Ave Maria composed by Schubert in the 17th Century playing assuredly against the backdrop of Wodaabe men posing in seemingly bizarre expressions introduces the documentary with a wonderful sense of foreshadowing as to how Herzog works to turn the lens back on the viewer.

    • sugars (even the kinds from vegetables fruits and starches) are the main cause of tooth decay, which can often lead to crooked teeth in adults. A diet of millet, milk, and a small amount of meat eliminates the problem at it's source.

  • Usually it is a man who chooses his female partner in many cultures around the world, so it is refreshing to see men competing for women's attention and women choosing the partner they desired. I enjoyed this video, but i have to say that the music played in the beggining made the men look creepy. I felt like i was watching that serial killer in the Silence of The Lambs.

This is solely based on their basic physical features. By that I mean, one could take them and place them in any other culture's style of dress, and they'd be equally attractive.

The Gerewol is so interesting, practically every cultural study focuses on it, but I'm interested to know what else is going on, like there are a lot of men attending the festival who aren't dancing - what are they doing? Are they content with their relationships and don't feel the need to participate, or is the custom limited? Some guys appear in partial makeup but also aren't dancing, what does this mean?

    • +ProudToBe AnAmerican You don't think we have organizations to stop black on black crime? Black Lives Matter is made specifically to stop police brutality against black people. And we have other organizations and movements to specifically stop black on black crimes too. The only reason black lives matter got so much attention is because we reminded people that we are human too, and that pissed white people off so they decided to angry about it.

      @froofroodabouifoubebe3239@froofroodabouifoubebe32397 жыл бұрын
    • Froofroo Dabouifoubebe Black Lives Matter is a racist terrorist group. Could there be a White Lives Matter? Of course not! It would be racist. If a white person wore a shirt saying "White Power", it would be racist, but a black can wear a "Black Power" shirt? Bullshit double standard. I never owned a slave. I've hung out with all races all of my life. I'm 2nd generation. My biological ancestors are from Greece and Italy. I had nothing to do with any slave trade, nor did my family, so why do I have to pay for it, just because my skin is white? Why does every person with white skin who comes from any country on the planet have to be blamed for slavery? My adoptive family, most were killed in the Holocaust. My family were slaves too! My family was tortured and murdered too. So, why can't I be proud to be white? End of discussion on that. I know life in the hood. I've seen it and I lived it. Don't try and tell me that there's a real movement to stop black on black violence when people ignore it every time it happens. Kids are raised not to "snitch". Where I'm from is where that female jogger got raped and killed 2 weeks ago. That shit doesn't fly there. If people knew who did it, the first thing they would do is call the cops unless the mob got a hold of that person and made him disappear. In order to keep a neighborhood safe, people have to take it in their hands to get the bad out. When someone gets shot and killed and it happens every day in the hood, you're gonna tell me that the people in the hood help the cops find the person who did it? Hell no! Unless it's your family, it's none of your business. 2 days ago, some dude got killed (example here, not saying you personally) on your street. You saw who did it, butt you ain't snitchin', so your story was that you were sleeping or had your headphones on whiling playing Nintendo. Next week, your brother gets shot and killed and there you are on tv pleading with the public to come forward. Why would anyone do that for you when you didn't do it for them 2 days ago? The hood will never get better if the people living there don't come together to make it better. The whole thing about cops shooting blacks is a lot more complex than random cops shooting random blacks. I'm not gonna get into that. When the 2 sides can come together, cops not beating up dudes like what has happened to me for drinking a beer in the park and the people not screaming out "Fuck the police!" or "Pigs must die!" when the cops ride down your street. If you treat them like shit, how do you expect them to treat you and vice-versa?
