Shane Dawson’s Unsuccessful Return To YouTube

On the 8th of October 2021, Shane Dawson (Shane Yaw) returned to KZhead after a 16 month hiatus which had been taken after he’d found himself in one of the biggest controversies in KZhead history. Toward the end of his break, having been gone for over a year, fans were almost begging for his return, possibly giving Shane Dawson the idea that if he were to come back with a new video, his viewership could be similar to that from before he disappeared. Only, a quick browse over his channel shows that this certainly hasn’t been the case. Shane Dawson's average of between 20 and 40 million views per video prior to his break has declined by approximately 90% to an average of around 4 million per video recently. He's had a little bit of a success with his podcast on his second channel Shane2, but the same cannot be said for the main channel. This video will investigate Shane Dawson's Story, so we can figure out - Why?
This is, From Fame To Shame, Shane Dawson’s Failed Return To KZhead .
Thank you guys for watching, like and sub if you enjoyed, SunnyV2 XO ❤

  • Just a small point, I think a lot of the reason why his “taking accountability” video was so badly received was because Jenna Marbles had just released her own taking accountability video just prior. Hers was seen as honest & as an effort to truly take accountability and his seemed as if it was copying hers in an effort to get the same sort of emotional response. There were A LOT of comparisons between the two videos at the time, and accusations of him trying to essentially gain the sort of sympathy that Jenna’s video had generated.

    @slendersage8728@slendersage8728 Жыл бұрын
    • That's exactly it! Jenna's video was clearly sincere and heartfelt, and then not even three days later Shane went "WeLL, I cAn MaKe OnE tOo" Like, he was clearly doing it for internet brownie points; he just had the most hilariously bad timing imaginable (e.g. the Willow Smith incident resurfacing, the Tati Westbrook video, etc.)

      @kaitlin9288@kaitlin9288 Жыл бұрын
    • It also doesn't help that Jenna actually committed to stepping away from youtube, which was touchy for a lot of people because they believed her mistakes (while they did need to be addressed) didn't warrant her losing her platform. Shane on the other hand, who is clearly not sorry for all of his offensive and predatory content, really thought he could "cancel me, I deserve it :(" his way out of the controversy, but wasn't prepared for people to respond accordingly. Even when he did remove himself from KZhead, he didn't respect his hiatus by making appearances in Ryland's videos. I still watch Julien's content, and while he talks about Jenna in passing here and there, she never personally shows up in his content.

  • He kept his old videos and was profiting off of them for YEARS including extremely racist and insensitive merch and Then teaming up with equally racist and problematic people made it even more obvious to me that his goal was never to change. Then the way he attacked an entire community he had only been a part of for a few months just because HE chose to be besties with the PROBLEM (jeffree) then only making the video bc he saw how much love Jenna marbles got for hers. That’s why I feel like his return to KZhead was so unsuccessful for someone with over 20M subscribers. He wasn’t genuine and he was defensive. Plus I’m sure whatever POC audience he had is gone as well. Not to mention all the people who left bc of the child comments, animal abuse, and other issues. • Honestly, I used to think money didn't corrupt as much as we like to say it does, but it's happening so much that it can't be a coincidence. Money, fame, and power really do make people play out those evil thoughts that some people have but then ignore because of morals or just knowing they could get caught. Meanwhile, the rich and famous are surrounded by people who say "do whatever you want" and "follow your heart" and they know they can just buy their way out of getting in trouble for it. The amount of celebrities who are openly or at least hint at being terrible people (jerks, rapists, bullies, abusers) is getting so long that I've stopped supporting Hollywood entirely.

He could literally just retire early, mind his business, and spend time with his family/friends etc, but he insists on being in the spotlight due to egotism/etc. Like, I hate him, and I think he deserves to have to become a normal member of society + work for a living like the average person, but he isn't even at that point yet! He could just cut his losses and DIP with enough money/resources to maintain his lifestyle, just without filming himself or getting so much attention, but he won't, and that's just going to make things worse for him 🙄

    • I think he’s a narcissist or sociopath. It’s been his “personality” and he has nothing else to become. It seems it was his friends that were funny. We saw the mask slip on that live when Tati mentions sexual assault and his words “I’M the one who was molested” like she took something that he earned and the well,no actual story, it was suggested by Katie after a quiz. Number 1, there is no quiz to test if you were molested, but if you saw how he jumped at the very mention on empathy to self diagnose himself an empath (another personality he took on as both the molest (which in his book he said he was never molested. It’s like I think a kink to him. The kids sex jokes, the puppet, the cousin). He decided because he didn’t like his face getting wet then it MUST be because he has a sweaty man on him. And the 3rd in his collection “suicide”. As someone who has attempted, who thinks about it daily, there is nothing to joke about. I get thru everything with humour but also having a close family member that did and succeeded, it’s not funny. These are also things he can manipulate his audience with to buy crap or get out of trouble. A lot of trouble others have lost their channel for.

It also defends putting in absolutely zero effort (like when that one chick was so racist that she called people a n-word lover, and didn't even bother to write her own apology) saying people should just forgive. It's simple, if you want people to believe that you've changed, then be proactive in pointing it out, don't wait until people open the closet and find all the skeletons themselves. Liam Neeson did that, and sure some people were initially mad but nobody has a problem with him nowadays.

I think it's odd to hang a thesis for a video on the quality of video output post-Shane-being-run-off-the-internet, instead of focusing on accountability and personal growth, which I feel are more meaningful metrics--neither of which I believe Shane has truly committed to, anyhow. I think it's telling Shane was double-guessing what he should be posting, because that still shows a level of artifice. If you're being you're true, authentic self, content will come more naturally (although I'm sure I'm underestimating the work of content creators). But if your 'true' self is seen as toxic and abusive, trying to win people back can only happen with in-authenticity and manipulation.

It seems Jake Paul is the only person I can think of who doesn't address any controversies and they seem to go away nearly instantly.

    • I mean…. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in life, but I’ve never accidentally done blackface. Kinda seems like he was purposefully profiting off nonstop racism. But that’s just my opinion.

    • If you lived through OG youtube you’ll kind of get it, shock/offensive content were doing really well back then, the social media culture has just changed and those who can’t adapt will fall. Tbh I think shane adapted quite well before his past caught up with him

    • @@joesr31 i am the most OG youtube user there is. His content seemed fake and lame. And I got pedo vibes later on. I knew there was an audience for him but it genuinely shocked me how big. Glad he's done.

    • I remember being really young and being weirded out by his content, but under the misguided 7 year old assumption that he was “just joking” I didn’t really think too hard about it at the time. Now as an adult I analyze EVERYTHING, it’s so clear to me how insufferably racist and predatory he was, but at 7, I didn’t even know 1/4 of the words adults used, I didn’t understand the nuances of racism or that I had ever experienced it myself. It’s that childlike innocence and ignorance coupled with the bright colors, costumes, and videos that were made specifically to look appealing to younger audiences. At a certain point he DID attempt to cover up his past and change his image, which I think kept a lot of his fans supporting him because as they grew up, his content was less and less obviously horrific. I’d say he got popular from a mix of luck, attention seeking, drawing in viewers with shock value, and specifically having a target demographic of young kids
