The Caps empty net came 9 seconds after the Detroit tying goal so you really can’t say Torts dropped the ball on that one.

Although this was not as good as most of Detroit wanted, a lot of people picked the RW to finish 7th, so I would like to re-post what I said back in the first week of October: Detroit has gone from 39 points in 2020, 48 in 2021, 74 points in 2022, and 80 points in 2023. Based on the level of play, the current roster, and without major injuries (after all Columbus lost 500 game hours due to player injuries this past season), I would be happy with 88 to 92 points. I think that with some contracts ending after this next season, development of prospects, and again no significant injuries, I would hope for 92 to 96 points the following season. Now if those numbers are enough to gain a playoff berth would be unknown. 92 points was enough for an Eastern berth in 2023, but required a 100 in 2022 & 96 in 2019. Just because a team has a winning season is no guarantee of a playoff - ask Pittsburgh whose one loss on last day kept them out of the post-season. Yet everyone is happy with Ottawa having 86 points last season and wants Detroit to be in that position this year.
Just an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. Total elation when Perron scores with 4 seconds left to the absolute downer of winning a game in a shootout and it meaning nothing. I'll get over it, but its gonna take more than a few hours to process the disappointment.

Losing 2 games to a talented young Coyotes team by a combined score of 8-1 really says it all
It's very funny to see nobody give the Capitals any credit especially over these past few games. Everyone said they wouldn't make it after the All star break because they had one of the toughest strength of schedules in the league and still found a way to win close clutch games, Backstrom was forced to retire, they sold at the deadline and lost two top 6 forwards in Kuzy and Mantha and still found a way to play through that, then at the end of the season we lose 2 of our top 4 D in Sandin/Jensen and the calls up killed it and didn't fold under pressure. Everyone considers this a heart break because Crosby played great the past month and Detroit made heroic comebacks to save their seasons, but maybe if the Pens didn't reach a point in the season where they looked like they had a chance at Celibrini and if Detroit didn't lose 8 games in a row getting outscored 31-12 they wouldn't be here in the first place and I see nobody discrediting either of these team for this. As a caps fan the Rangers are the team I least wanted to face because the capitals suck against fast teams with elite offensive fire power as everyone can tell by their goal differential and they do way better winning close games against teams that get their wins playing good defense lile the Hurricanes/Bruins so I really waned the Caps first round MU to be either of these 2 not the Rangers.
They said it was done. They said Ovi only had 8 goals in 43 games, the team looks old, we don't have Backy, and Kuzy was playing like a minor league player. But no, despite all the adversity and the toughest second half schedule, we defy all odds and made it. It's a win for the team regardless of what happened in the next few games against the rangers. The young players look good, Coach Carbery is excellent. I remember it was reported that Ovi immediately called Coach Carbery and asked how do we get back into the winning circle after his hire. Why do people keep talking about whether Torterella knew or not? Why would he care? He's focused on the game in front of him and the team he coaches. And his two options are: 1) go to overtime, 100% get eliminated or try to win in regulation and have a small chance at making it. Why should anything else factor in? If your team is eliminated, you don't send your goalie to the bench in a tie game. Think back to the last time a team pulled their goalie when the extra point wasn't a necessity and you'll be thinking for a time longer than I care to assume. Lifetime 30-year-old Detroit native and Red Wings fan. May have been a heartbreaker last night but all of the mistakes I’m seeing my team make we weren’t going to stop making them if we had made the playoffs and would have probably had a first round exit. It was an interesting season to see if we were going to be taking a step backwards or a step forward to being a consistently competitive team in the league. I would say we moved forward this year
Man the Wings had me rooting for them these past couple weeks, some sick last minute goals and OT wins to keep the dream alive. Hopefully Larkin and Raymond can carry their play over to next season
I'm a Caps fan, and while I do agree the officials were extremely lazy tonight, both teams had quite a few penalties that were not called that could've affected the game just as much as the unallowed goal did. Sometimes things don't go how they should, but realistically there were probably many bad calls in earlier games this season that affected the standings just as much as the Caps/Flyers game. It's part of the sport (unfortunately). Detroit, I can't believe how hard you guys pushed for that final spot! It was fun (and nerve-wracking for me) to see your determination to acquire every point you had the chance to get. Now to the playoffs!
*Whelp! Looks like it's time for me to root for the 'Canes this playoff season!*
Man those last few games were beyond exciting to watch regardless of the season outcome
Definitely biased as a caps fan, but there's something at least to be said about how players react (or don't) right after the whistle is blown on the no-goal call. Either way, I agree that it's an unacceptable whistle there.
The officiating this year has been a dumpsterfire. It needs to be corrected.
Feel worse for Sid and the Pens. The man carried his team so far this year. Still elite at 36 years old but the team couldn’t get there. Detroit has a future. This may have been the Penguins last chance
The Detroit Redwings really took "heartbreaking" to a whole new level! 😅
I don’t get how Detroit missed the playoffs, they had more wins than Washington. It just goes to show how messed up the points system is in the NHL.
Any reasonable Red Wings fan was honestly happy to have meaningful games this deep into April. They better get the bags ready for Raymond and Mo! Looking forward to a Rangers / Oilers Cup final!
Neither of those teams Is making the finals bud
Rangers, yes. Nyet to the oilers.
That tiebreaker rule is so stupid. It should be total wins instead of only counting regulation wins. Now you have washington getting in the playoffs instead of detroit despite them having more losses.
Bet you'd have a different opinion if the shoe was on the other foot
Why would you punish the team that won MORE in regulation? Win at 5v5… there’s no 3v3 or shootout in the playoffs.
maybe detroit should have played better when they played the caps
You had less points. Yzerplan failed
@@holyspider9206 I guess I can kind of see why, but at the same time you shouldn't be rewarding a team for losing either.
Imagine being detroit. needing a win AND needing washington to lose. and learning during the overtime, that it doesnt matter anymore
The NHL is absolutely incredible. What a season this has been.
Hah hah, suck it Wings! - A Flyers fan that lived in Michigan in 1997. Yes, I'm still salty.
At least Detroit had a way better season than Philly 😂 ,we beat you more than you beat us,Detroit should be the one in the playoffs, with the amazing performances we did and the new improvements we definitely deserved our season to continue.
At least our goalie isn’t a rapist 🤡
Why are you laughing? You just admitted to being a Flyers fan.
I know the caps are gonna get absolutely hammered against the rangers but as a Washington native I can’t help but chuckle at all the mayhem this has caused
Remember last year when the Bruins were going to sweep the Panthers? Yeah me too. We are 2-2 this season against the Rangers. We'll see what happens but there is always people like you ready to discount teams. Playoffs is a whole other beast. Sounds more like you are jealous.
@@TPGRiT Just want to make it clear that I am a caps fan, not sure why I wrote the comment like this but I’m not jealous of the team I root for lol
Every point counts and that's why I love the NHL! Down to the last game. A few roster adjustments that actually pan out and the Wings will be in next year.
Yup Detroit can’t win games in regulation and that is what hurt their chances
My family has had season tickets for capitals since they started in dc. For the first time in my life, thank you flyers
Pulling the goalie AFTER detroit was already in ot is dumb
They didn't know that on the bench...
As a caps fan my heart was in my ass for the last half of that 3rd period. So glad we won but good god it was stressful.
Same. It was the most stressful game of the season so far.

I mean to be honest, the call between Washington and Philadelphia you're talking about at 2:30 is 100% correct according to the rulebook. The referees are not making a bad call whatsoever, however, the rule reaaaaally needs to change this upcoming season. Yes the referees are human and they can lose sight of the puck. But if it somehow ends up in the net after the whistle, and no more "deliberate action" has been done to further move the puck into the net, they should really be able to switch it up to a good goal. This isn't the referees fault, it's the league and rulebooks fault.
Especially agree with your point about the officiating. Overall this year, it has been quite terrible. We've got a league with the best players, we should also have the best referees. Sure, it's easy to pick on them when we have video replay and the internet, but still...So many bad calls and so many inconsistencies all year long....
Wings should be mad at themselves, they played terrible hockey down the stretch. Ended up going 7-15 since that 7 losing streak in march. Just pathetic stuff. I more mad at that shit. They ruined their season themselves.
Just remember that much of that losing streak was due to injuries. Stuff happens in hockey. Hopefully we will have more depth next season to enable us to overcome those sorts of problems.
@@gregorybiestek3431 yeah very true but it’s just frustrating. Couple more points here and there and we most likely are in the playoffs. 😕
@@danglesnipecelly13 Don't forget that before the season started EVERYONE said that Detroit would be lucky to get 82 points and most likely finish 7th in the division. 91 points and almost in is still pretty good given what EVERYBODY said about us back then.
-37 goal differential and Washington snakes their way into the playoffs
They beat Detroit twice in the last 10 games. They earned that spot.
@@lankancheetahthanks the refs!!
And Detroit couldn't win in regulation. OT team. Whats your point
I went from total elation, running around my house screaming like a lunatic, to being stoic and nonverbal for 2 days. They had chances to lock down the WC spot and blew it, but those last two games were top notch hockey.
I haven’t seen anyone that dejected after their own victory since Felipe Massa won the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix. *context for people who don’t follow F1 and/or weren’t following it at the time (probably most people who will read this comment) : Felipe Massa won the final race of the 2008 F1 season in his home country of Brazil. If everyone finished in the positions they were in when he finished he would have won the Championship, equal on points with Lewis Hamilton but holding the tiebreaker. Instead Hamilton made a pass at the final corner to claim the Title by a single point. Massa’s team was already celebrating his championship and had to be told the bad news.
Sad we missed the playoffs, but glad we proved everyone wrong who said we'd finish behind Ottawa and Buffalo this year 🥹
Let’s not talk about it. Had it been any other team against the Caps, they wouldn’t have pulled the goalie with the game tied. Makes me sick to my stomach. I hope the Rangers sweep them
Watching Crosby have an excellent year and the team finally pull together and end the season 9-1-3, this hurt a little extra
Patrick Kane to his agent: “I’ve made a serious mistake..” 💀🤣🤣
Selling at the deadline and being in a retool and still making the playoffs with a first time coach and -37 goal differential is insane. Couldn’t be more proud.
You forgot refs missing many calls in the last few games to help Washington.
@@deannaray1726 They don't ask how. They ask how many. And at the end of the season, we have 91 points and 32 RWs, that's how many for you.
@@deannaray1726 cry some more 😥😢😭
An entire season's worth of bad puck luck and calls not going the Caps' way was repaid all in that one early whistle to keep it at 0.
The Wings tying goal should have even happened with that ridiculous icing call
As a metro Detroiter and Wings fan my whole life, I don't find it too heartbreaking. The Wings decided their own fate earlier and then later in the season with two really bad, long losing streaks. It still would have been great if it worked out in that last game, but they should have beat Washington a few games before and taken those points from them. Again, their own control of their fate. This team has had an overall good season and the rebuild seems quicker than any of us expected even one season ago.
