I may not be a mortician, Loyal Theorists, but I can declare that the DC Universe is DEAD. At least the iteration with Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Aquaman, and the rest of the Justice League. DC has been struggling to make its movie franchise work for years, but I finally found a way to fix it! And I’ll even share my reaction to James Gunn’s new DC slate of Gods and Monsters. You’ll have to watch to see if I think it will FAIL or succeed...

    • The animated series were very pivotal for me becoming a fan of superhero adaptations. In general, the animated content was a treasure, it just went so far over the heads of Hollywood back then it seemed like they really didn't get it. The talent for writing good stories was there instead they just gave animation the brush off entirely thinking it was just for kids, but the older fans who were watching the cartoons at the time just knew that their medium being mostly ignored in the live-action films was a big mistake.

    • @@rondorock2563 absolutely 🙌🙌, the Story telling in those early animated shows was elite. Justice league was able to tell stories about obscure characters and made it feel natural. Those shows are the reason I love super heroes. Without them I don’t think I’d be as big of fan as I am.

  • "Respect the source material" is something I've been pushing for, and I'm sure others do too. I can't not think of a series getting an adaptation in which the creators just simply DGAF with what they were given to produce, and then yell at the fans as if it's the fans fault for not supporting their "vision".

    • One question though: is it okay to rewrite a character's origin if it feels off? What if a character is beloved to you, but you feel that the story is terrible? That's how I feel I would write obscure characters: the character is great, the potential is there, but the story is either outdated or doesn't ring true to the character's core values and personality, so it's best to either axe them completely or rewrite their story in a way that makes sense and lives up to the themes of the character. Why not?

To some extent, Harry Potter too, there were so many details and little subplots in the books that weren't in the movie, and the movies completely wrecked Ron

    • Animated stuff still does not do well in theaters, unless specifically targeting a younger audience. People in the US still have the false impression that animated means cartoons and thus is for kids. One of the reasons I used to love watching animated super hero stuff growing up was because not all the stories were just for kids. The story moment that stood out most to me growing up was when Darkseid came to metropolis and eventually forced to leave, but before leaving, he killed someone in front of Superman and then left before Superman could do anything about it. I remember Superman losing it an destroying a car because he failed to save someone. Stories like that prove that animated does not have to be just for kids and I wished more animated movies were released in theaters like that.

    • @@undeadtrooper13 So that's why he was/is still in season 3? As fan of books I didn't even finished second season so if he really cared he would left franchise long time ago or didn't even played, I wasn't even big fan of season 1 also (mostly because of changes). Also for season 1 he got 800k$ per episode, for S2 he got even more 1m$ per episode which is more than GoT cast was earning and the end of series. So we can easily imagine for season 3 he earned even more. So there is possibility during negotiations for season 4 he wanted so much money Netflix didn't/couldn't pay (I don't judge him for wanting more) and Liam Hemsworth is much much cheaper actor. So during (or before) season 4 "negotiations" very likely Amazon contacted Henry and offered him much better deal (lead actor + producer) and Amazon can literally afford any price. Additionally as producer he has more control under production (casting etc) so taking this deal was no brainer + he was warhammer fan longer than witcher. And in the end contracts can't be done that fast aspecialy for "actor + producer", so Henry and Amazon definitely were talking months in advance before he officially left The Witcher.

    • @@nieznajomy4398 Cavill would have happily done 7 seasons of the show, but the writers went so far off track with season 2, and I can only imagine how bad it'll be with season 3. Cavill was dedicated to doing the witcher justice in a proper tv adaptation, the writers wouldn't have it and Cavill repeatedly tried to have things changed through out season 2, roach died and the writers were gonna try to make it funny in some way, but Cavill fought for it to be changed to something a bit more somber which is what we got. Cavill would've been happy to take a pay cut as long as the writers stuck to the books, but they didn't, so Cavill is out now, and hopefully his warhammer project goes well while the witcher series crashes and burns for losing it's star because they couldn't stick to an already established story.

Half of those were really shoehorned -- Point #1 in which even he admitted that the 10 movies included lots of smaller, obscure characters and it's _starting with_ Gods and Monsters, and Point #4 in which all of these movies have been announced up front isn't really "taking his time" -- and James Gunn clearly didn't follow Point #5 but got no "red X" on the list for that instead of the "Green check" he gave every other item. I also enjoyed the fact that he kept evaluating each point, but I wish he'd done it with less bias. But I think he wanted to be able to say "I told you so" from the future -- that's hard to say if James Gunn only partly follows the list, neither embracing it or nor rejecting it.

I know a great many people might think it SOUNDS dumb to not have a plan (if the fan reception to the New Star Wars Trilogy is any indication), but, honestly, not having a plan doesn't restrict you creatively; I do still stress the importance of good note-taking, but basically just don't overthink how your story is gonna go: it frees up room to do what you want, when you want, how you want, where you want, why you want with your characters and the world they're in. I'm not a professional writer, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. ;)

Basically what I've been saying: don't overthink things, just roll with it. Keep things consistent, absolutely, but don't overthink things. You don't want to back yourself in to a creative corner and give up on the project because keeping the momentum going is too daunting a task. :/ Funny that, Star Wars was plagued with problems since the beginning; it's amazing this single film got a franchise, and even got off the ground, on account of how much went wrong even before filming started. For instance, George Lucas was very much an idea man, but he wasn't much of a writer, so he got the help of a ghostwriter to weave his ideas together: Alan Dean Foster. Fun fact, in an interview, he was asked if he ever felt bitter about George Lucas taking all the credit, to which he responded "not at all": I won't lie, I respect that, as I feel most people would be.

    • I'm glad that this is the advice that Mat mentions when it comes to mapping out a story larger than a single movie, book or whatever because I'm currently going through this "note-taking", "go with the flow", "not restricting creativity" process with my OCs. I have them in my head, I know I'd like them to crossover in some way (I have a very heavily influenced superhero comic book crossover type universe, like Marvel), I have the basics for the universe they live in, but stuff like they're origin stories, character arcs, how exactly they'll crossover, or what type of media I'll introduce them in is up in the air but still being thought of in the back of my head, and I can come up with may different iterations of each of those aspects I've mentioned and go with it. Since, I've had these characters and this universe for over 2 years now, I've gotten used to feeling free to change characters names, which is really something I'd usually not be comfortable with (also a good 99% of my OCs don't have names, so as I develop them more I'll be to narrow down a name that actually makes sense for each of them).

I love that James Gunn goes out of his way to give massive credit to the comics that inspired his stories, something not many creatives do. He also has a nice balance of big-hitting well-knowns and unknowns who haven’t been adapted to death, are ripe with potential, and deserve more attention. Overall, James Gunn’s announced projects se pretty cool and I can't wait to see these characters come to life!

    • I mean Zack Snyder did kind of give credit as well like pointing out Frank Miller; But I don't know how he read it. He literally used it as a basis to point out why his Batman kills, but in that same comic Batman literally breaks a gun in half and calls it a coward's weapon. But him saying something like "Tom King's run on Supergirl was my favorite comicbook last year", really gives off the vibes that he does love and read comics.

  • I am a crazy fan of DC heroes. I do think Gunn has its reason to introduces some "unknown" characters like Swamp Thing and Booster Gold and yet they play quite an important role in the comics. As far as we know swamp thing and booster gold are totally from a different timeline. One is consider his first appearance in the early past, and the other is set in the future. Not even that, they both possess different concept( dark& comic relief character ), where Gunn can be brilliant enough to reinforce the idea in his main storyline by stirring with different character tone and help audiece to explore the various genre not just simply micmicking the overused heroic and glorious moment of superheroes because that wasnt what DC comic meant for. My thinking was that he might needed an opening to progress each different parts of the story and eventually merge into one. If that's true, I definitely looking forward for more of his upcoming DC movie.

  • As a writer, I completely understand the uncertainty. I have one project with eight seperate story arcs that I've dreampt up over the course of three years and want to write eventually. You want to know where you're aiming but have the flexibility to redirect plots and character arcs as they develop naturally over time. You can guide a kid onto a career track, but there's no guarantee they'll take to it.

  • my only concern with gunns direction is that peacemaker and suicide squad still carries over way too similar tone with the guardians movie, namely groups of characters arguing while screaming. one aspect im sure hed nail is the drama aspect as seen in guardians 2, but one TBD factor is the gritty tone that batman is known for. mind you he wont be the director of the movies i think, so theres probably still room for change there

    @projekttaku1@projekttaku1 Жыл бұрын
    • Yep! A comic book movie universe can benefit greatly from animation given it can be used to bridge the caps in-between movies, introduce characters who aren't planned to appear in the movies, and even dwelve into certain characters and their origins. Plus, it will be less money, and all you need to do is hire the actors to voice the characters they play.

  • Just hearing that one of the series ideas is titled Waller has me excited. Amanda Waller is constantly seen as an antagonist to overcome in the Suicide Squad films (both live action and animated), but the drawback is that her character isn't fleshed out in favor of whoever is on the team this time. As the only character guaranteed to be present in the franchise every time, I like the idea that she can finally be the focus, maybe with a rotating cast of villains under her command. Also gives DC a chance to float villains to the audience and see who might be worth a film down the line.
