  • Well good job on this video, it’s very good. Awesome content at start about the cryptic board descriptions. But in the mid part I was kinda shocked, that you seem to value boards on their connectors. Don’t forget that you need to see behind the connectors - some of them don’t work in some combos on some boards. Most important is here the compatibility or better to say the layout of some boards can deny full PCI-E x16 if used with m2 in some combinations. That’s the reason why some boards with x670 chipset are so “overpriced”.

I'm ordering the parts for my first PC build hopefully next week but I'd like to confirm something about the mobo before I do that. I'm getting a Ryzen 5 7600 paired with an RX 7800 XT, and for mobo I was going to go for the MSI Pro B650M-A. Is this one still good enough if my purpose for this build is gaming at 1440p? Or would you recommend to take the leap up to the more premium "gaming" motherboards shown in the video? (Case is going to be the Antec NX410 you recommended so no problems about the size) Cheers!

My X670 is beyond overkill for my use case, but the audio is leaps and bounds ahead of this. Since all I do is game and record music, I went back to my overpriced board because it works so much better. Maybe I got a one-off that just leaked thru the QA process, but that was enough for me to go back.

  • The MSI Edge B650 WiFi is a better board than the B650 WiFi Tomahawk version (also costs a bit more) & that is what I used on my recent Ryzen 9 7900 12C/24T 1440p build. My late-2019 3700X 1080p build used an MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard & that PC is still running great today with all the original hardware, so both board options are a good choice really.

    • It's a great board. The only real difference is the white styling and the addition of PCIE Gen 5 M.2 Support. Personally I like the look of the edge more than the Tomahawk (I know some people love matte black but I personally favor the black/white or black/silver look). And it goes on sale cheaper than the Tomahawk sometimes too.

  • It’s very important to note that certain motherboards will automatically lower the speed of the top PCIe slot if you plug anything into the 2nd and 3rd slots, which means your GPU will take a performance hit. My particular motherboard (Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master) does this, and lowered the top slot from PCIe 4.0 down to PCIe 3.0 after installing an expansion device into the 2nd PCIe slot.

  • Absolutely great video, thanks Jason. I’m not currently building but use your videos to help friends and family that ask me for advice, as things change so much and I wouldn’t give out advice unless I had a good information source. I really like the Strix F board (especially as it is on sale in the uk at £209 right now) but I wish it had the Q-code reader (has helped me troubleshoot in the past) and a usb c header. The Strix b650e e gaming has these features for £269, but users need to be careful. If I’m not mistaken when M.2_3 is populated, PCIEx16_1 runs in X8 mode. Maybe not a problem right now but could be down the line for high end gaming builds. Just seems an odd choice to make as the second pcie slot may not be effected. This could be a topic to cover in an advanced builders guild. ‘’Understanding your motherboard’s connectivity and the importance of reading your manual”. Plus how to decide what features are important.

  • Hey Jason! Fantastic video as usual. Will the audio performance on the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk Wifi make it worth the $50 increase in price over the audio performance of the AsRock B650M Pro RS Wifi?

    @Keeks33@Keeks33Ай бұрын
    • By itself, no way. But you'll get a lot more USB (and higher speed) connections, better build quality, more PCIE slots, and a full bandwidth 3rd M.2 slot which to me is enough of a package to make it worth it if you are also using an analog audio connector. But if you just want the audio, consider spending the $50 (maybe a bit more) on an external audio device instead.

  • 4:00 I must add that your Motherboard supporting 4 m.2 slots for example, or having support for PCIe Bifurcation are premiums for X series boards, rarely seen on B series boards, that further future proof your system. But you are right, not everyone will keep adding drives when they are running out of storage, and not everyone will buy a PCIe x8 GPU that has slots for 1 or 2 m.2 drives running at PCIe x4.

  • For Zen5 remember there are 28 PCIe lanes. 4 are reserved for taking to the chipset(s) if you are 670 chipset is really just two 650s chained onto the same 4x PCI chipset lanes. The other 24 lanes are normally diveded between 16 for GPU slot, 4 for main M.2, 4 for second M.2 the final 4 are either a PCI slot (often a x16 slot but only wired with 4 lanes) a 3rd lane or on a handful of bards they use these for a 40gb/s USB4 port.

  • I would agree on the A series. However, there are several -very- bad B boards. The one thing is, we're starting to see X series in that same price segment (see Asrock X670E Pro, which is now in several places below $200) that said, the most significant benefits of X670E do matter depending on your end use plan. Having a 10Gbe onboard was a virtual requirement for what I was after, as a Quadro is going to take up slots, and I have repeatedly upgraded my NVME to as fast as I can go for video swap surface before it gets to my NAS. One other item you don't often find on B650 is Thunderbolt4, which, if you are also dealing with creator purposes, you are likely to need. So, plan on your purpose. Are you building to game? Or are you building to create? Very different. And, at a certain point, you may hit an area where looking at Threadripper pays off. I'm not eager to upgrade my Threadripper 5975, but PCI-E lanes, but for some users, this will matter. Keep in mind: fastest graphics card will also be very different based on your build purposes.

    • That board isn't fantastic, but no reason it couldn't do a Ryzen 5800X3D or 5700X3D. Will likely need a better cooler. Just make sure to update the bios to a compatible one with the new CPUs (latest non-beta version). Once you do that, should be ok with just about any current gen GPU, as long as your PSU has enough power for it.
