    • the disagreement I have if you can even call it that is the jump from 1440p to 4k. Is it really worth the effort and the huge expense? Or will the visuals look 'the same'? Getting older my eyes are fuzzy view anyway so 1440p sees to be the no need to improve the size to see the text. and I forgot what I was talking about dammit

    • @@tommyrotton9468 I'll throw in on this, since it's something I went through some years ago. The jump from 1080p to 1440p (1600p in my case) is huge. The jump from 1440p to 4k is significant, but not nearly as striking. The ringer: going to ultrawide is another huge jump in visuals, especially if you go 21:10 with something like a 3840x1600 panel. The question you have to answer for yourself is whether you want more vertical or more horizontal screen real estate. Anything first person or third person will benefit from the latter. Anything isometric or top down will benefit more from the former.

  • To this day the biggest change I have ever experienced in gaming was going from 60Hz to 144Hz and switching from a TN panel to an IPS. No resolution, ray tracing or other technology could impact those 2 jumps though. Edit: HDR on 4k seem to be another BIG JUMP going from IPS 1440p.

    @svenyproud@svenyproud14 күн бұрын
    • HDR and path tracing is just as meaningful. Going from 1440p to 4K is overhyped as hell, it's a meaningful jump on TVs but not on around 30" monitors where you can't even tell the pixel density apart.

  • The concept of "future proofing" was invented by PC parts makers and influencers to get people to overbuy. It's related to the concept of the "upgrade path." Build the PC you need today. Later, when that PC can no longer deliver what you need, build a new one. Sell or give away the old one as a working unit, part it out, or relegate it to a secondary use. I recommend keeping it, so when your new build has issues you can still get things done while you sort it out.

    • @@AD34534 AM4 is a good example of a platform that allowed PC builders to build now and upgrade later, but I suspect most people who built an AM4 machine never dropped in a newer CPU at some later date. I don't know if anyone has data to confirm or refute this. I ran my R7 1700 system until Zen2 was released, and then I built an entirely new R9 3900X system and kept my 1700 system intact for secondary use. I still have that 3900X system and my main PC is now a 13700K. Future proofing and upgrade path are moot for me.

Its having all kinds of performance issues they haven't resolved (see our latest CPU Market Update video for more on this) and even at their best they still require crazy amounts of cooling and power with no real boost to show for it over the competition. @nexusvideo@nexusvideo14 күн бұрын
    • i believe the 5000 series can go one or two ways ... 1. nvidia further pushes down the power draw on what is achievable at lower power levels. ie each card in the series will draw less power tha it's predecessor while offering more performance (except the the 5060 , i'm beting it'll hardly be different from the 4060). in which case no 12vhpwr cables will melt since the gneration si drawing well below the cable's actual spec , thus making nivida look "right" for backing the standard. or the more likely thing given 4000 series already did the above compared to 300 series; 2. nvidia boost power draw across the board so performance goes up drastically across the board, and we'll see 12vhwpr connectors melting on 5070's and 5080's too this time around.

I'm aiming at 1080p Alpha testing unoptimized Unreal Engine 5+ games, but keeping as cheap as possible. I've settled on Ryzen 5 5500, RX 6650XT, and ASUS Prime B450M A-II, 16 or 32GB RAM, but am struggling with the case and PSU. Based on reviews, I like the Montech AIR 903 BASE ATX Mid Tower Case: lots of room, good air flow, but PCPP is warning me about the front USB ports. "A USB 2.0 to USB 3.2 Gen 1 header adapter is required," and "A USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter is required." Assuming I want to connect a USB keyboard and trackball to the front, how much do I need to worry about this? In fact, looking at the USB connectors on the Motherboard, I am not finding any cases that precisely match. Could you help me understand? This would be my first build in over twenty years. ADATA XPG CORE Reactor is another good series. MSI MPG is another good series.

Heck you can still have a blast on one 1060, I still had one here until I ripped a cap off and couldn't find my solder tweezers and tried to reattach it with a regular iron lol. I stole the cage fan and casing off it for a pi cooler and now it is silicon art lol... I still have a functioning 760 I can probably have a decent time on with some optimizations in the game settings, except I robbed the 3x wind force fans for a home brew router with blow threw cooling lol. I could honestly probably just throw some cheap case fans on it with some duct tape and make a few games run lol. Main point is, if you only plan to game, YOU ARE SET for quite a while. If you want to game at max settings for no reason other than yolo. It's pretty stilly lol. I turn my 4090 down for most games but still find limitiations where its like, why am I running that setting that high except to say I can lol EG. I've tried 27 inch 1440p monitors at 240 htz, but there seemed to be much screen so there is some information that is missed in esports titles so I had to play in a borderless windowed at 1920x1080.

If only they'd give me a new high-end GPU this year... but nooo, they just had to cancel the project, I suppose due to technical difficulties with the multi-die architecture... but atleast in 6 years the next bunch could have something good. Maybe they'll bring back the old multi-GPU feature that NVidia abandoned. That would be pretty sweet.

I know it will perform better in some more gpu demanding games, but fortnite on potato settings is more cpu heavy right? Shame to pay for a card that won't allow you to game into the future. Also the 4060 is just weak even in Fortnite compared to other options. I've recently benchmarked it along with the 6400 and the A380. The A380 did suffer more with a 7-10% loss in perfomance on PCIE 3.0 x8. I ran Forza 5, Final Fantasy endwalker, SuperPosition (1080p medium), Heaven 4.0 (1080p Ultra, 8xAA), CS2 (1080p low) & Fortnite (1080p medium, no nanites). 6500XT + 5600 really shines in CS2 (240+FPS average), while Fortnite suffered 20% fps-loss with a SATA SSD comparred a to PCIE 3.0x2.

If they can make it work that would be great, but I also think some of the underlying assumptions about digital computing power usage are changing rapidly. • The question about needing to dump more power is legit though. We are hitting limits with cpu architecture though. Transistors used to be 200-300 atoms wide still, silicon’s atomic size is about 0.2 nanometers making today’s transistors about 70 silicon atoms wide. We stopped scaling the channel length down below 20 nm because below that at current tehcnology you run into quantum mechanical effects like electron tunneling too much. Newer generations, like 5 nm, is more a mnemonic than anything, this does not mean transistor density itself is not going up, it very much is, but newer technologies rely on things like taller fins in transistors, supply voltage scaling etc. Right now scaled devices are so small, the dopants have statistical behavior, and the devices stop being so consistent, this is an obvious problem. So we need advancements still and the need to come fromsomehwere. But remember: the hardware will not function without software. Software that just eats cycles and mallocs like it is free. My brother is DevOps and he just "If it works and is reliable, all good, screw optimisation." Just look at older but technically better (compilation wise and resource wise) languages like C/C++ but we also have newer like D/Julia and for better malloc Rust. Instead peope love to code in Python/PHP/Ruby and while they have their place, humongous frameworks that eat and eat (looking at you Electron) and interpreted that rely on GC (Java pls, C#, F#) are just too inefficient. No more JIT, no more GC, all compiled, all memory safe. This is half the battle. Also for other hardware, unlimited drawcalls and RDMA/iWarp/RoCe on every NIC or userspace stack (works great for me on BSD). We really need that 0 copy, it is okay still on 2.5Gbit, starts dragging on 5 and forget it on 10. This is unacceptable.

Getting just enough PSU for now can cost you much more, in the long term, than oversizing it right off the bat, and the initial difference can only be $20-30. That’s much better than spending money on an entirely new PSU to support your shiny, new, beefy GPU that you snag down the road. But this mostly applies to people that know they are going to continue upgrading their GPU to a higher tier that will require more electron juice.

  • Good evening Jason, help a brother out if you can, any build suggestions for someone that wants a stress free build for a 1440p 240hz monitor? What i mean is i wanna be able to have max settings and great stable fps in my games (mainly single player) without having to do any workarounds, my PC will be gaming only and i can pay for the best build that fits the criteria. Thank you in advance (since the video only covered budget 1440p)

  • Never future proof, but you can buy with a mind towards the future in getting a MB with Gen 5 lanes everywhere, yes it overkill now, but as the build ages those faster lanes will eventually be usable for nice improvements. Also, I'm buying parts as i can afford them so i can avoid putting them on CC. Just waiting now for a MB i really want, if i bought it now i'd get the asrock Taichi Lite, but I kind of want to see the newer AMD chipset that will come later this year.

  • IIRC Zen3 prices settled in about Q2/22 in response to Alder Lake and the mighty 5800x3D became the gaming flagship. Initially the $200 3600 was the value gamer, while Zen3 won plaudits as the best for a whole year, where demand went crazy so the launch prices stuck. Zen4 retained mostly the Zen3 launch pricing with DDR5 & mobo costs higher making it premium. Haven't most Zen4 prices settled already this year? Zen5 will want to reassert the full brand value. Some Zen4 have reportedly climbed back up, possibly a sign of dwindling stock. Historically you'd expect DDR5 transition to be done by now, but AM4 appears to retain appeal. Floating prices avoids annoyance and stalling sales in the run up to new releases. It seems a better way to manage things than have firesales of stock competing with newly launched hotness.

  • 8700k, 1080Ti, 32 GB ram....need to stretch this out a bit longer. Any recommendations for 1440p Gray Zone?

    @axm2689@axm268914 күн бұрын
    • Honestly the 1080ti is still a decent GPU to this day. If you want to wait another year or two you can. However if you feel that your 1080ti isn’t up to spec, then I understand. If you care about Nivdia features and want something that will be futureproof for 5 years on new 1440p games and be 200% than the 1080ti then I would recommend The RTX 4070TI super 16GB. It’s only around $800, has 16GB VRAM on 256bit memory bus, excellent raytracing , and the performance is equivalent to the 4080. The 4080 super while better is only 5% faster and costs $200 more. The 4090 is overkill for that game but that GPU can be kept for while before having to upgrade. The only problem is that it’s very expensive at $1,800, only performs 30% faster than the 4080 super, and will lose value like a rock when the 5090 releases. But if you are on a budget then for Gary zone the RTX 4070 should be the starting point. Ideally I would spend the extra $50 and get the super as it offers a 25% performance improvement for only 10% more

    • If you don’t care about Nvidia features Grazy zone will still run fine on AMD My recommendations for AMD Would be the 7900GRE for $550 Or the 7900XT

  • I know they say don't future proof cpu and gpu. How about amd motherboards. Is it OK to future proof am5 with an x670, so you have no issue with new cpus.

    @kevingreen2245@kevingreen224514 күн бұрын
    • The differences between X670 and B650 are minimal outside of some additional PCIE lanes (which means more M.2 connections or more USB connections). If you find a good deal on an X670 board and you like the features vs similarly priced B650, then go for it. But I'd just pretend that X670 = B650 and make sure you get the features you want on the board (but I still don't recommend A620 due to lack of precision boost overdrive).

      @PCBuilderChannel@PCBuilderChannel14 күн бұрын
    • There are some differences. If you wanna use PCI-E 4.0 x16 and 1 NVMe Slot on 4.0, you will need go buy the toptier of the brands X670. I mostly go for the higher end Mobo because of the 10 Gbits Ethernet, so I dont need to add a PCI Network Interface and my Rig stays Futureproof. Also only high end has SPDIF Audio Port. If you add a PCI Device or a second NVMe, on X670 PCIE 4.0 drops to x8.

  • Hey Jason! I wanted to thank you for all your help. Between serving in the military and starting a family, my last PC build was in the late 90s when I was in HS. I've been a console gamer but am now making the switch to PC since I fell in love with my Steam Deck. I've been watching all your videos and here is my build that I'm going to tackle this weekend. The reason I'm using a TV for my monitor is because I'm getting it for free as a 15-year work anniversary gift from my employer. And I got a nice bonus, so I wanted a higher-tier PC. Let me know what you think (the CPU/GPU combo prob sounds familiar): CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600; GPU: ASRock Phantom Radeon RX 7900XT; MB: ASUS ROG STRIX B650-A WIFI; SSD: Team Group MP44L M.2 2280 2TB; Memory: Team T-Force Delta RGB 32GB; CPU Cooler: ID-COOLING White 240mm AIO Cooler w/ 2.1" Customizable Display; PSU: MSI MAG A750GL; Monitor: LG evo C3 48" TV

    • Looks good to me though if going with a White Build the new ASRock B650 Steel Legend or the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite Ice would be better Motherboard choices since they better fit a White Build. Also if in the US go with the ADATA Core Reactor II 850W PSU as it only $10 more vs the MSI and it has a 10 Year Warranty vs 5 on the MSI.
