How is it that the population of Palestinians grew from 1.98 million to 5.04 million from 1990 to 2022, if "genocide" has been done by Israel against the Palestinians? I'm not a fan of the US foreign policy, but I'm not going to label anything I don't like a "genocide," when the facts don't add up. The number of innocent local Gazans caught up in this conflict is terrible, (one-sided reporting by the way), but it's a war that Hamas started. I can't see how Israel can get rid of Hamas cancer without damaging the healthy cells, i.e., the civilians, who did vote in Hamas to power in the first place about two decades ago. There is no easy answer in geopolitics. Hundreds of thousands of civilians died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, anyone accusing the US of "genocide?"

  • THANK YOU. I'm only halfway through the video but the whole "obfuscating what happened through news headlines" has been driving me insane for so long now. And I'm not from the US. I mainly get my news from our, supposedly, neutral public broadcaster - but they seem to be getting their news from the US or other pro-Israeli sources and I can't stand it. Here are some things I've noticed in their reporting (all of which could be found in a single headline and preamble, too, might I add): - H*mas is always mentioned as a terror organization, while Israel is just Israel - October 7th was an "attack", what Israel has been doing since is an "operation" - "30,000 have been killed" - not 30,000 civilians, and certainly not 30,000 civilian Palestinians - "Difficult to report from Gaza" - not "Israel has created a hostile and potentially lethal environment for journalists" - "Journalists have become targets" - ....yes, FOR ISRAEL The most egregious example of obfuscation I've seen so far was when Reporters Without Borders published a report with the title, "Israel Suffocating Journalism in Gaza". Two days later, our public broadcaster published their own segment on journalism in Gaza, featuring the chairman of Reporters Without Borders. Their headline? "Difficult Situation for Journalists in Gaza". And the only quote they used from the chairman was, "There is a sort of propaganda war from both sides, and that's why it's so important for reports by independent journalists to be allowed out". Who isn't allowing independent journalism? Because I'm fairly confident it isn't both sides~

During a war, people die in large numbers. This was expected by Hamas, it was part of the plan. You have to think from the point of view of the families murdered on Oct 7th. Now if it was the bogeyman (such as China) that does the same thing, I imagine that this will be language they'll use to describe it: "In the U.S sometimes you can catch a glimpse of the Police using an unmarked vehicles that resembles a civillian vehicle or a public vehicle such as a Taxi or even a school bus, the people are often unaware of their presence and that they are being monitored by the state. Inside the vehicle is a secret police whose sole purpose is to conduct discriminatory surveillance on ethnic minority areas to uphold the state's control on the people of New York."

    • I actually find it funny how much the average American fails to perceive authoritarian elements. We have literal secret police, mass government surveillance, oppression of political and social movements and groups, make school student pledge themselves to the country every day of the week, and actively re-writing history to paint them in a positive light. Not even mentioning all the foreign interference the u.s engages it, our massive military, and the coups and dictatorships we support abroad. The u.s is everything they say they aren’t and projects every single flaw away from itself.

  • This reminds me of a situation I experienced last year; where my English professor, two weeks after October 7th, decided to address what was going on in Palestine. She said that she held off on talking about it for this long, because she felt like she didn't understand the full situation. So after spending weeks "researching" (by that she meant looking through multiple different news outlets) she came to a very passive, two-sided conclusion. She essentially said everyone is suffering, and no one's really in the wrong, and the history is just so so complicated. I later went to go speak to her in her office. We were writing a research essay and I decided to chose media analysis and how it reports on global events, which I needed to get a green light from her to do. She gave me the go ahead and we ended up talking about different events which led us to talking about Israel-Palestine again, and she said one of the craziest things I've ever heard in my life. "I don't think western media is doing a good enough job at condemning Hamas." What???????????? I honestly didn't know how to respond to that. I genuinely thought she was joking, but she was dead serious. The conversation pretty much died after that and I left her office feeling just so betrayed. I already knew I probably wasn't going to see eye to eye with her, because of how two sided she was being earlier, but I just genuinely wasn't expecting her to say that. All these strong words for Hamas but nothing for Israel? How could someone of her education and her standing end up with a belief like that? Is she not aware of the biases that exist in the media? Could she not have used ANY OTHER source than just western news outlets? It made me so mad and so disappointed.

    • And that’s all that “peace for both sides” talk is fake - the person has a bias for “!srail” or against Palestinians but wants to appear fair and/or “good”. They already know they side with “!srail”; be it bc of personal connections, religious affiliation, and/or anti-Arab bias/racism (or Islamophobia). Siding with “!srail” outright means that “nice/good/fair” mask falls off bc they’d be exposing their true colors and no amount of research and seeing horrors committed by the people they stand with will change that in most cases. These are the types that can point out corruption and lies of the government/media in other cases but when when it comes to certain people, they happily accept what’s fed to them. I know people like this and it’s so frustrating 😡 *sorry for the wall of text, btw

Do you know what a Jihad is and what that entails? Have you spoken to any Palestinians about how they feel about attacks? • Sorry, that is a false dichotomy. What people refer to as left in America is center at best. Right of center at worst. The lefty media is still corporate owned media that lies. The real left in America has little voice and does not lie. The Democratic party at the federal level is right of center. They are seen as left by the extreme right. Only when you get down to state levels in blue states do you see some significant shift to what can be seen as a little left of center. But not left. You have to leave this country and hemisphere to see anything that starts to get close to left. I appreciate your views and analogy on the false dichotomy at the federal level. I just needed to state that what is considered left at their level isn't even on the same planet with leftists. The left wants everyone to home at the end of the day happy and healthy. Everyone. There is no party in affect in American politics that want this. There are some parties but they rarely get on any ballots. Socialism is a bad word in America despite it being how most of America operates. Not controlled by but how our country actually works. Government. Military. Police. Fire department. DPW. SS. Medicare. Some utilities. Much water. In average times well over 1/3 of every dollar spent is socialist spending. In times of crises, especially after capitalism blows up the economy, over 1/2 of dollars spend is socialist. The oligarchs know this and love this. They like us paying for most everything they need and when they get into trouble using our socialist systems to bail them out. The left is alive and well but dramatically under represented and made to look like the bad guy while it keeps the country afloat.

I'm old enough to remember pre-24 hour news cycle and I think what was even more important in leading us to our current state is post-2001. News channels now had been on a 24-hour reporting binge for months seeing record high viewership. Once the events of 2001 became distant, they needed to fill that void. And fill it they did with sensationalized stories, ticker-tape style sourcing, and demagogues. Prior to the 24-hour news cycle, I remember feeling less informed, but also less anxiety about being informed. Now it just seems like a constant battle of one-upmanship.

    @purplehaze2358@purplehaze2358Ай бұрын
    • Not humans in general. Most people I would describe as being pro-social. They value community, have empathy, and have sets of morals and ethics. If people broadly were only ever greedy and self interested, we would never have banded together to form communities and civilizations. The core advantage humans have over other animals is our ability to coordinate, communicate complex ideas, and to pass on our knowledge to future generations. Unfortunately, it just turns out that if you don't value any of that, it's pretty easy to exploit the structure of society to gain advantages and the nature of advantages is that they are a positive feedback loop. The more power you have, the easier it becomes to gain more and maintain it and the more incentive you have to protect what you've gained. Now sometimes people do anti-social things out of desperation. But that isn't the same thing as greed. Don't give in to misanthropy. You can't build a better world if you don't believe we deserve it.
