  • Maxine is an interesting character because her writing separates her from every other female protagonist in a slasher. She’s concerned about her career, and she constantly tries to manifest success by telling herself “you’re a fucking star.” This writing is so compelling, especially because it clashes with Pearl’s character, who destroyed her life for one audition that was completely taken out from underneath her. I’m really excited to see MAXXXINE, mostly because I’m curious to see how Maxine will turn out.

X hit me different than most other slashers, it had a surprising amount of layers and small intricate details that I think just went over a lot of peoples heads. Pearl (the sequel) seems to be getting a more positive review from audiences thankfully though, I thought it was a million times better and deeper than X.

  • I actually really liked Jackson’s death. Even though it was a single gunshot and was mostly off screen, it was layered with tragic symbolism and hidden meaning in so many ways. The swampy setting mirrors the rice paddies of Vietnam in many ways; it seems that Jackson escaped one jungle filled with farmers trying to shoot him only to die in another jungle, with another farmer shooting at him. There’s also this unsettling and simultaneous convergence of youth/age, Jackson and Howard’s shared military experience and the unspoken hierarchy connoted between them, and the parallel racial hierarchy between the two men, which has been hinted at during multiple different points of the film, with the pornographic racialized tropes that Jackson’s character represents in the eyes of the viewer, of RJ, and of Howard. In my opinion, while the least gory, it was most definitely the saddest, most symbolic, and most poignant death in the film.

  • Mia Goth is such a rare talent. It’s no wonder that Shia LaBeouf fell for her. I first saw Mia in the film “A Cure for Wellness” and was blown away at how talented she was in the film. It’s also nice to see Brittney Snow continue to choose roles that are each quite different from any others that she has previously done. It’s easy to be typecast and she has done a great job with avoiding that.

    • The difference reminds me of, while not an official actor, Florence from Florence and the Machine. If you hear her talk in interviews, she sounds soft and mousy. Nervous even (she’s also British). But whenever she takes on her stage persona (a sort of acting) she becomes commanding, aggressive even. Not even the same person. That’s who Mia Goth reminds me of. Her soft voice and timid demeanor makes me appreciate her acting skills even more. Some actors play themselves so often or only play one kind of role. She’s a chameleon, and I hope to see more of her.

When Howard asked Wayne if he severed in the military, Wayne responded no, because he was flat footed. • That deathgasm killcount was a really good one and praised the film so much. And the fact you called out that it was the director who hit you with the strike not the studio, that's just icky. When a studio does it, it's annoying but expected and your mind goes to some greedy suits who don't know what they're doing. The director doing it feels worse because it feels more personal and really reflects poorly on the director. Like he's punishing you and Zoran for enjoying his movie and introducing it to millions who hadn't even heard of it. I had it on my watch list because of the kill count but ima take it off now.

    • I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head with the studio vs director thing. I hear “the studio hit us with a copyright strike” and instantly I think it’s just some bored, low-level flunky whose job it is to sit there and go “they used three frames of our property in a video, UNACCEPTABLE!” as they hit the ‘strike’ button. That, or that it’s not even a person doing it, it’s just an automatic response to keywords. Hearing a director has done it feels a lot more personal and spiteful. To see someone giving a mainly positive review of your work and still respond by snatching it away like a toddler is a really bad look.

It kind of felt like to me that he really only saw the adult film industry as a stepping stone to his ambitions to make "true" cinema. He’s perfectly warranted in being uncomfortable with his girlfriend doing porn and on top of that, being forced to film it. He was then brushed off by everyone including her, essentially being told to suck it up and deal, which isn’t exactly cool. The whole situation is pretty fucked up, but his response certainly pushed her further in that direction. So it could’ve been handled better for sure. Lol
