I spent time as an Infantryman in the Mountains, Forest, Winter Warfare, Desert, and Jungle. The Jungle was by far the hardest and everything changes from the formations you use, navigation, communications, hygiene, etc.
Mountains? Cool. What did you do in the mountains and winter warfare? And where was you located?
@@williamthegunnut3839 Our unit mission was to work in the Itallan Alps with the Italian Alpinis to help shut down the couple of spots that Soviet Armor could get through. I was in an NG Unit on the Canadian border. You had to be able to ski well to get in. Have a good day.
@@geoffwalters3662 aaa ok thats cool! Thanks for the reply sir.
During what years did you serve?
J.O.T.C. Fort Sherman (Panama)... on night operations... we literally had monkeys bombarding us from the jungle canopy above. They were throwing anything they could find down upon us. One squaddie, at the back of our patrol line, was actually knocked out by a large branch/tree limb (courtesy of one irate jungle monkey).
Born and raised in Sweden, speak English perfectly. Nonetheless a pleasant surprise to see subtitles in Swedish!

How great is that?! Wonderfull Thomas, this makes my evening even better. Thanks!
Wowww Got another goosebumps... Awesome Mr. Gast.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Thomas! I plan within next year or 2 to go.
Great video Thomas
Thank you for putting this up. It brings back alot of memories, both good and bad!
RIP Hans Eberle, Ehre und Stolz
Really awesome film Thomas! Helped too that i am swedish.
The subtitles should have been in English. I missed out on the best bits and pieces of documentary.
This is a 1996 Channel 4 documentary, very interesting
It's TV4 not channel 4, one of Swedens foremost masonic channels. And I don't think they're responsible for making it, they just aired it.
Back when there were 2 or 3 books written by former legionairs. No internet, no forums. They were going into real unknown territory and doing it in a different language. It's properly crazy in the best of ways
Top!!
The indicatif of the Year is (In this movie, like he was so often) the Lieutenant-colonel Hans Eberle (1:01:35) who became 1994 Commandant / Chef de Batallion 3 R.E.I! So the film was made between 1994 and 1996!
58:30 the sergent clearly says "mois de janvier 1995"
Watched this back in the mid 1990s,wonder how they got on in the legion
Yep, late 80’s.❤️✊
Awesome thx
Thats actually so hard core and net level psychological, the fly over the ceremony, it just felt so military badass like out of halo
My father was in foreign legion in 1980s and then went to Croatian war

Tell us more, pls.
19:00 Is it just me, or do other vets notice the small details, like how the new recruits don't know yet how to place their hands and thumbs while at parade rest? 37:15 Brings back memories 😆, but I had the advantage of a father who is also a vet and told me it's all a head game to see if you break discipline. I enjoyed this very much! Thank you!
but did you notice the fly over during the ceremony and how badass that is ?
Language is Swedish. It was shown on Swedish television in 1997 so your estimation of the time might be correct.

Watching this has made me see what happened to all the people who got civil, I never gave it any thought at the time, where or how they were dealt with. The effort that some people made to actually get there and then suddenly civil, their dreams shattered, looking sorry for themselves as they were given the train tickets 🤣
Joined in 96 or 97 can't remember, was there for 4 months.Got sick and had to leave.
What happens to the guys that can’t really grasp the language? You can only beat a guy so much.

Non-combat, but while still in FFL?
Trying to find Ronald Jacobs/Ryan Jefferson who joined the Legion in 1996. Can anyone help?
is there a English language version?
Do you know any of those men?
I was in 2006 at Aubagne...after I passed all the tests I resiged the contract...But was an interesting experience for Me and Marseille an very...mysterious city..especcially the old fortress and harbour
You were lucky : I used to know a Korean guy who engaged at the same time as I did as he wanted to do the same as you but they did not let him resign before the end of the 4 months instruction classes that were hell for him. He also wanted to be able to tell his story after a quick return home, but he had to pay a higher price for it than he initially thought. And I think he regreted his tourism attempt a lot in the end.

What year is this? I remember trading a BDU shirt for a French Smock i see Legionnaire recruits wearing during Reforger 1986.
During an interview in part one I saw a calender on the table with the year 1995.

The Swedish narrator says that it was brand new recruits that came to Guyana directly from civilian life. But how I understand it, the jungle part is a specific valuntary course that already experienced legionairres need to actively apply for and be accepred to. Anyone knows if this is correct?

Can you put some legion hand to hand combat footage from your time in legion?
@Geo S haha this guys gotta be joking. I don’t even think there’s any U.S. Army footage of hand to hand combat available
Thats some crazy shit how intense the fly over during the ceremony. A lot of these guys probably saw heavy combat...
Didn’t show getting issued basic uniform in Paris, getting paid & buying beer from the station getting pissed on the train to Marseille. I had my boots nicked whilst asleep in the toilet.
1996 I believe Dean didn’t finish his contract for the whole 5 years 🤷♂️
I think you could be right about that..
So funny that the subs are in swedish.

If I join the legion how likely am I to see combat? Just got out of the U.S. Marines and was a grunt. I trained ALOT and traveled a lot however I never was able to apply my craft in combat unfortunately. It’s peacetime for America, is that so for France/ the Legion? Wouldn’t like to be stuck in a garrison peacetime military.
The French have 5000 troops on Operation Barkhane in sub-Saharan Africa right now. The Legion never really go away from that continent; lots of old Imperial French colonies there which France is still involved with. France never completely abandoned Africa post-colonialisation like the British did.
The legionnaires never sit , never rest . It doesn't happen in the legion . They're always being sent on hot spots and war zones around the planet .. ready to die anytime , as it's part of their contract ..Some also fight drug trade in the jungle of French Guyana ..
