#56 Defeated by the Snow

I'm having help from Tamas and Naim this week, but there's not much we can do. Snow keeps coming down and I'm not able to get building and food supplies with the car, so can't continue the works. We will try to make it to the valley and wait for warmer weather.

  • All that snow looks so serene, quiet and tranquil. Absolutely beautiful. It also looks absolutely terrifying at the same time, in case you are stuck in there. Snow is also a very treacherous beast, so one has to be careful while treading it for sure. Still, a very nice video and I appreciate the hard work that goes into those, especially during winter times. Thank you Martijn. It has been an amazing journey for the last 3+ years (I think), and it will be still amazing for a couple more years to come. Wish you all the best. And a big shout out and thank you to all those volunteers who actually come by and help you out. That is just amazing. Thanks to all of you.

  • There is a beauty in the grey tones of the video reflecting your feeling of defeat. Living at one with nature teaches us so much of ourselves, the adaptation required to be in harmony. It humbles us and whilst it feels like defeat, there is no battle. Shifting our expectation of what we can do that fits in the parameters of the moment. The sound of the trailer in the snow echoed the sound of the cowbells of summer. I wonder if anyone else heard this? It reminded me that the alpine flowers will be in bloom before too long and this is the period of rest before the long hard work days begin again.

  • As always you leave us wanting more! The enormity of the task before you whilst trying to battle the power of mother nature must be quite mind-blowing. Whilst the scenes that mother nature creates are some of the most stunning it does show us that you are always going to work with her permission. If the lady says no, then work will cease. The serenity that one gets in such silence and beauty shows us just what a small cog the human is within our world. As always we are shown the beauty and the harshness that building in the mountains entails. One is left in ore of the beauty that surrounds you, that you in turn share with us. Thank you for giving us a small window of opportunity to catch a whisper of mother nature as she works her magic❤️

    • Yes, I think this could be a great idea, a small bunkhouse on the 'flat' spot you mentioned, where helpers could stay, some more folding stools so people could sit together, basic facilities at least. I know people come to help voluntarily but it must be a bit of a shock that there is nowhere for them to even sit at all, apart from the stone table and benches in dry weather. It could be a fair weather project for a larger group in the better weather. I hope the boy who left on his own in another direction got safely down the mountain to his car? The hotel in Turin looked amazing. It would be nice to have a look around the town? Unless you're back up in the mountains already. I hope the weather warms up a little so you can get back to your home.

  • Greetings from Finland. I have watched every video and I really appreciate the project. We have a lot of snow in Finland, 4-6 months a year. I have noticed that you have not prepared for winter very well. There are quite good solutions for moving snow. They clearly make life easier. You also need a better car. For example, a four-wheel drive pick-up with big off-road tires would make it easier to travel. It would also be a good workhorse on buildings. We are waiting for a warm spring.

  • To bad about so much snow. Sorry you were not able to progress as you wanted to especially when you had the help. Enjoy the wonderful city of Turin, there’s so much to see. I’ve been there many times and there’s always something new to explore, I love this city. I hope you will enjoy the Piedmontese cuisine. I would suggest that you should try bagna cauda, the white truffles and surely the wine. Also, indulge yourself in the different cheeses and chocolates . But let’s not forget risotto. I especially love the hot chocolate drink( bicerin). ( Fiorio Cafe) I would love to hear about your thoughts on your visit to Turin. My birth place piedmont Italy. ❤

  • That's life living with nature, right there for ya. The overview make me think of my time in the Pare Mountains as a student. Very remote (3 hrs from the nearest village with the 'good car' 4wd) and as a dutchy I had a hard time orientating the mountain valleys. But after half a year I knew pretty well where to look for the ealry morning sun, how to detect any excitement in the area (once a week a car would pass) and where to go to listen for the birds flying into the local forest for the night. Different geo, but the meaning of landscape beyond just distance became very clear to me then. And that's what I get from your lovely overviews of the mountains. You are becoming one with the landscape, even though it just kicked you out, sort of 🙂

  • Wow, I never noticed the terraced land before, how cool. This is the amounts of snow I envision when I think of the alps! We get a lot of snow in the mountains in Quebec, the hills aren’t as high but accumulates enough snow weight to ruin a car’s suspension if left for an entire winter. You may want a bigger shovel ....

  • The views are beautiful, but Winter is harsh I have not seen that much snow since I lived in far northern Ontario Canada or when I lived in Maine USA. Sometimes mother nature decides for us on what we can accomplish in the moment. You have incredible friends who come to help you out the most valuable thing we have is time and you have wonderful people in your circle who give you theirs and work hard to help you achieve your goal. Well done.

  • Hello Martjin, Watching you work in the snow takes me back to my home town of Chicago, Illiniois USA. I've lived through many snow storms, some large enough to stop the city but I always had a warm home to return to. I truly admire your dedication to creating not just a home for yourself, but a way of life, regardless of the weather conditions. And I'm very glad you have friends who can help you along the way; it's a beautiful thing to witness. Having lived in the mountains of California in later years, I am wondering if you see any issues with flooding or slides when the snow melts. Your immediate area seems to be safe, but some of the surrounding areas are craggy. Wishing you safety and as always, thanking you for sharing your life with all of us. I'm sure you know by now how much what you're sharing means to everyone and how much help you're providing to so many. Wishing you blessings and fair weather.
