#68 Waterproofing the Cabin, Closing the Trench
This week I'm putting in insulation and damp proofing, with some local help of Julian, Davide and Jordi. The rainy weather is not behind yet, which is a good test for the drainage system.

And now my Sunday is complete.
Mine too!
Mine too! I woke up and was hoping new vid was uploaded - had to wait a bit. Always worth waiting for!!!
Same here 😂
And mine, all is right in the world now 😂😊
Well done Martín , great Job👍👊🏻
Oh, I love seeing your little companions there on the property making themselves at home. They've won the Chicken Lottery! Thanks Martijn, and a Big Thanks to your helpers. Wonderful scenery! 😂 😊
I’m curious if you choose to pay your helpers.
@@louanneschrenk4084 #loadedquestion if I ever saw one. The reward is its own payment.
One of my mothers favorite things to do on a summer day was to sit outside and watch her chickens scratching for food. She said they are hard workers and all their energy went to providing her with eggs.
Did you get new tattoos?
Fantastic work love the progression
I am completely immersed in your world just like I was immersed into Harry Potter world when I was a kid. You make me feel like life's worth living and exploring, that there is more to experience in life.
lol, oh boy...
At least you can determine where you need to put extra drainage. Thats certainly a lot of rain.😮
Siddhant, it was nice to read your comment! Martijn has that effect on many and it’s wonderful. He inspires me in life. Life indeed is worth living. There is much good in this world…we search and find it, just like Martijn. Best wishes! 💚 from Texas
Texas. Martijn is a real cowboy. Not a movie from 1955. Yeah, it's filmed, but so much better than the half hour we were raised with. Not knocking the basic values expoused by the old time westerns. Movies that tried to set an example, but not the weirdo stuff that goes on randomly now. Too deep, sorry. How is his bike ride not like a cattle drive?
So the water will seep thru the white fabric you wrapped the green hose? That’s crazy.
The placidity of sitting there watching the chickens doing chicken business and with the snow capped mountains as a backdrop is breathtaking. Here I sit, thousands of miles away, and I feel your contentment. And I am happy for you---and for me as a viewer. Thank you, Martjin.
The contrast is striking ...the blooming spring, soon summer green at Martijn's altitude on the mountain ...& it's still winter at the very peaks ...just breathtaking!
Everything is now so beautifully green. It's lovely to hear the river.
I have been watching you for over a year. If your videos don't win some kind of award from KZhead something is wrong with the system. When that bird (Chickadee?) on the side of your home came out from what I hope is a nest it absolutely melted my heart....wow...
Yes and I loved the little worm nonchalantly crawling away - it just needed a little bubble saying "Me? eat your lettuce?? No it was not me!"
I laughed out loud when bird appeared in those rocks !😂
Yes! I saw that, it looked like a chickadee to me too. And Martijn peering in the hole ...if he put a hanging seed house nearby he'll have endless joy watching them. Chickens and chickadees ...Martijn is a regular modern St. Francis! 😊😇
It is like a prayer. Love the sounds of nature: wind, rain: and birds!
Okay, now we reached the point where you're making me (an Italian) discover even some espresso machines I never heard of. I think you reached peak country integration :)
He deserves an italian passport already :-D
530 euro per una moca, cmq sia fatta è veramente troppo
Anyone have a link to the espresso maker?
Jeeeez! 530 € ?? For that I can almost get a professional coffee maker.
lol
Ever since we started watching these videos, for some reasons the Sundays seem to be growing farther apart. 😂
Happily spending time with you on your beautiful mountain. Things are looking so lush and green , take care 🌸
I often wonder if the descendents of the original builders of the cabins are aware of the changes and the joy that their ancestors have given so many people worldwide.
The chickens are growing bigger and a great companion 😊
The most inspiring thing of all is the motivation to keep going.
Yes. Martijn's progress is inspring me to push forward on my old house restoration.
Wonderful progress in spite of extreme weather conditions. Your Nirvana is looking very lush and your girls have settled in beautifully. They will be thanking you with an abundance of eggs in a short time. Thank you for sharing your paradise🤗
Martijn, do you ever get so tired that you just can't go any more? You have such great stamina. You are such an inspiration.
I’d like to know too.
Doesnt he say he went away for three days in this episode? If you work for yourself the hours you put in feel different.
I’m waiting for you to say…. “Hey, gals.”
.....it's the espresso😉😆
the way it's being recorded is genius, appreciate that you give us the opportunity to have the impression of being there with you
I'm always so sad when I here the music signaling the video is about to end. Wow...I was nervous this week about the flooding and so relieved everything was ok. Gorgeous in the mountains this time if year. Glad the chickens are nice pets for you Martijn!
A man, his expresso and his chickens enjoying a moment. Such a peaceful thing.
Each episode reveals nature's changing face. The beauty of your vista is literally staggering! The drainage and insulation system in the ditch surrounding the house is fascinating. Looking forward to seeing what the septic system is like. REALLY looking forward to seeing the floor poured as you'll have figured out how you're going to heat it. Thanks so much for your channel. It's a beautiful thing.
Martjin, you need to build a covered terrace so you can sit outside and eat in the rain 🌧
I was thinking the same thing...maybe a covered arbor would be beautiful..and, Those little wooden chairs will not last long continually exposed to the weather...
Agree and it would also be nice to hide from the sun during summer
Gazebo with a wooden roof covered in green metal ...anchored with four stone pillars and huge wooden beams anchored & cemented into holes on top of the large square/rectangular stone pillars. It could be large enough to have a grill underneath and picnic tables & be like an outside room ...kind of like what you see at the best American national parks.
I guess to get extra work done, he would need a permanent team of volunteers. He is some man. I hope he is in his cabin before winter 🙏 ❤
Good on you for making the difficult decision to stop forward progress and make the necessary changes. Well done!
With the amount of rain you've had this week, I'm amazed at how much you were able to achieve! Nothing slows you down, neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night . . .you are amazing! I love how the chickens follow you around and " talk" to you and how gentle and quiet you are around them! Have a wonderful week and I'll see you next Sunday on the mountain!
🎉😊
Another triumph! My wife and I are always amazed how you keep your shirts so clean whilst working in mud.❤
A white shirt, too! That’s funny, I hadn’t thought of that! 😂
Martijn is the most ‘dapper’ homesteader!
Imagine the smell though. Europeans aren't big on bathing.
Why is it so satisfying to watch someone else work?
Again beautiful camera work !
that bird coming out of the stonework melted my heart, you are doing an amazing job on the land,
Bent uw nu een Nederlander? Of Engelse 😅😊
It'll always blow my mind how quickly everything turns green.
And once again, one beautiful evening hour spent in the Italian Alps, sharing your work, and progress, and of course, scenery. Thank you, again, Martijn.
$470 US for that snappy espresso maker --- who knew something so simple and clever could be a bank breaker. I'll just settle for watching you Martjin!
Notice he said the coffee was 'pretty good' and didn't put a link in the description. Nice try by the company.
An inche worm. Nice weather. Happy for you. I had no idea the building went that low into the ground. I like Julians shovel. It's made for tall people.
The pinnacle of my week.
I was so relieved to hear you say that your chickens were pets . Thank you for your kindness towards your pets . They are such beautiful. 😊
Heavy rain. A blessing and a curse. I'm saddened by the loss happening in Northern Italy due to the floods and happy to see you have weathered the storms. But, such beauty water brings to our landscape! Love your new little pond and seeing your chicks happy and thriving and that little birdie in the wall was the best catch of this weeks video. Have a great week Martijn!
really felt that espresso sip man
68 weekends with you - thank you very much Martijn ❤
when I was young i bicycled to work and when I passed construction sites I would always see retired men looking….watching the work as it progressed. Lol and now I am old and watch you and learn so much. Beautiful video .
I was panicking 1 hour ago when I didn’t found your video yet… now I fa relax in bed, watch it an then go to sleep!
You always say 'Thank you for Watching ' at the end of your video's Martijn, but it is US who should be thanking you, and WE DO! Thank you Sir for another wonderful insight into your Italian Life and your beautiful Home. Next week cannot come soon enough.
The birdsong is beautiful 😊
Everything is so lush and green. We are praying for rain in Alberta. It has been very dry with fires in the north. Everything is moving along well for you. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦
Always a joy and a pleasure to watch you. I thought you weren't going to upload a video and was very sad. Kept checking my phone for notification and there you are :) Thank you so much. I love watching you. I love the way how humble you are and allow nothing to get you down :) You make my Sundays special :) So grateful to you :) You are an amazing. wonderful person Martijn :) Love, joy and blessings to you :)🥰🙏 xx
I know! He was late this week - i thought maybe the rainfall and flooding put a hitch into things.
Inspiring transition. The chick's are a nice touch. Glad you have some nice buddies to help you build and chicken live-stock clucking and enjoying their stay.
The transformation of the landscape is so amazing and so, so beautiful. My weekly peek into your journey always ends to soon.
Sitting down to make a quick trip into the Alps.
Thank you for sharing...hope all your neighbors, near and far, are surviving the flooding. Your chickens are beautiful.
I am constantly amazed at your fortitude. Never ending rain and you just make a coffee and carry on. 😊
The beauty of these stone buildings is beyond words.
I love to see the progress that you make every week! Keep it up!
I think this rebuild is a real big deal . I had no idea it was going to be so complicated . The mountains look spectacular in all their greenery .
Thumbs up for the barista chapter! A life without 'un caffè' is no life.
Always anxious to see your improvements. You're creating an Eden.
Monumental work, Martijn! So glad you have had Julian and Davide to help you with everything.
I have only just by accident came across your channel...I have watched about 10 episodes.I absolutely love your channel.Keep up the good work.
Keep watching :) he is amazing. I have been watching him from his day one :)
Welcome to the worldwide club - Martijn's videos are very therapeutic.
@@misscrafty5904 So what?
When I first discovered Martijns channel I binge watched on and off for several days. Then I started to ration myself a little bit, but now, sadly, I am down to waiting for each new weekly episode 🙂
@@bedepuy5184 be kind to everyone 😊
Calling the "ladies" "guys" 😂 As always really enjoyable. Thank you for taking us on this journey. I believe your life is the dream of many.
You are so lucky to have folks come and help. So much work getting done!
I loved seeing the before and after flooding videos with your brothers! Nature is Amazing, and what a nice touch for you to include that
It’s getting into place now and thanks for your friends for helping out . Chicken growing well they love their freedom roaming around .
Seems like a lot done this week. Don’t forget that the back filled dirt will settle and possibly affect the grade. Thanks for letting us experience a little piece of heaven over there.
I think the chickens need their own show. One hour following the chickens around, I would watch it
While you have the excavator you can greatly surface water running down to the cabins by digging some diagonal furrow drains just up the hill from the cabins. This may divert water down and to the side. That is if you haven't already done so.
Dankjewel Martijn! Ik dacht even dat je deze week niet zou uploaden. 😅
Eu também achei!
I hope you're doing the right thing and teaching the chickens Dutch, Italian as well as English. It'll open up their future prospects. Cheers, as always, for letting us follow your adventures.
Great job. With our house we did similar things. When you put in the Imhoff sewerage system I suggest you put some water in the tank. Given the rains you had it will prevent the tank from floating when it rains. Also do put in some inspection pozzetti outside. The help enormously when the system blocks (eg because of fats).
Gosh! You achieved so much in the week Martijn, and with the weather relentless in its watering! Well done to you…a phenomenal achievement. As always I feel joy and sadness as we say goodbye to you there…I feel I know every step between your kitchen…the tent…the cabins…the chooks…💜💜💜 Thank you
The power of mother nature is indeed quite frightening. The roar of the fast-moving water was all too apparent in today's episode. Then when we see the shots of the very same place you visited with your family earlier this month it is simply mindblowing, all that energy and the damage it can cause as we have seen in recent weeks on world news programmes. Mother nature takes no prisoners! It's amazing the variety of wildlife you have up so high. A carcophany of the most beautiful birdsong greats us every morning, then we see a winged visitor making use of the natural holes in your walls. Ever the opportunist, and so obviously more than happy to share your home! Hopefully next week your weather will settle down and be more conducive to getting your septic tank laid in and fully sorted. When once again I will get my fix of beautiful scenery and mother nature showing us her very best! Accompanied by the most beautiful clear pure bird song. With no noise pollution we get to witness the sound at it's very purest. ❤️
Rosemary, I, too love the variety of birdsong. They are beautiful to hear. 2 of our human senses are fulfilled with Martijn’s videos. 😊
I sit here watching and 'AMAZING' keeps coming up! Last summer the cabin roof, and now this 'plumbing project'......You have tackled some very challenging tasks.....your quiet demeanor and endurance is impressive ~Thank You for Sharing~
Очень впечатлили шагающая по дереву гусеничка и птичка, живущая в стене. И все остальное... Так заморочиться! Во всех смыслах дорого стоит!
Question? Why not just dig all dirt away from side of stone cabin and then just reduce the slope angle of dirt to 20 or 30 degrees. With that backhoe you cld have just dug out some more dirt and change angle leaving a small walkway around building. Just wondering. Seems best to just have nothing against wall. Thanks. Love your channel and your keen eye for photography.
Another peaceful and great Sunday afternoon .. Thanx Martin ❤️🙏🇺🇸
Martin puts a new meaning to True Grit .. Just Wow !
I love it when you say "the chickens are pets"
Thank you for the step-by-step explanation of the French drain system. I understand the concept, but I never could quite picture how it all worked so that was very helpful. And yes, like everybody else is saying you have an absolutely gorgeous spot. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I found your channel a week ago, I’ve watched every video since, now I’m on the last one until Sunday and I feel blue. You’re an amazingly talented man who is extremely relaxing to watch. Your gifted work with a camera is awe inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. Blessings
Might be a good idea to get some perennial and annual rye grass over the excavation and backfill areas to establish a turf matte that will absorb some water and direct overland water flow. Even if only temporary, reduces erosion and muddy mess while continuing your excellent reconstruction.
Weer genoten van de rust, en je skills , tot volgende week
Phew!! Talk about WORK!! I get tired just watching! Love the chickens....still listening for the happy cow bells....are'nt you blessed to have guys show up to help you out....God bless ya'll.
As I watch you work on water proofing and re-directing, I wonder if you are anticipating indoor plumbing and what a change it will be. You've been living a lot closer to nature for over a year..... it looks like this winter you won't have to go outside for this part of life! How nice! Thank you once again for letting us check in on you and your progress each week.
Seems like the chickens got comfy. :)
you've done a man's work sir.
From one programmer/graphic designer to another, it's wonderful to switch off and watch you live the dream once a week.
Aha. You are alive and unharmed through the epic flooding ! Your farm looks good.
Great progress this week, Martijn! Nice to have had the help with those small wheelbarrow loads and the uneven terrain. Two true back-savers!
Hi Martijn, Wow, so much Rain, here in USA we are having drought conditions, with grass going brown! Watering Everything from the grass, garden, flowers, flowering trees, pine trees, pear tree & a bird bath for birds, squirrels, & my Feral cat!! Nice info on your Espresso machine! Planting basil in your garden! Thanks Julian, Davide & Jordi for your Help!! What a Great Job on Waterproofing the cabin, even in the rain, & filling up the trench!! What a Surprise a Bird comes out of your Stone Cabin, that was sweet!! Finally a Sunny day, to continue your work with helpers! Love that You love the Chickens & You talk to them & they Follow You & You call them Pets, & you let them out from 2pm to 8pm, this is Wonderful!! I Wish You the Best in Everything You Do!! Listening to You from your Outro: of things you are going to do in the following weeks, was Very Interesting!! The Drone Shots, was Breathtaking Views & so Beautiful!! Take care Martijn, & be safe & have a Lovely Sunday & the week to Follow!!🤩❣ Love Barb from Central Illinois USA🥰🤠😎❤
Its sweet those chickens hang around you, they know you protect them
The cabin is really coming along. Good job. I think the chicks like hanging out with you.
As a coffee lover I enjoyed seeing your new espresso gadget. So glad the storms did not wreak too much havoc on your property!
That grinder!!!! So brill.
I'm happy to note the absence of standing water around the buildings. Hope you enjoyed your getaway. It rains more in the mountains than elsewhere due to clouds getting "trapped" between peaks. So even though it's greener, it's also wetter. That should protect our mountains from droughts and the effects of Greenhouse warming extremes.
I was beside myself when there was no early Sunday morning post from Martijn. Im just grateful you are okay, and thank you for the video!!!
Happy Sunday everyone.
🥰
You work and channel footage is not just on another level but in a different dimension, absolutely amazing all round. 🙏
This beats any Netflix series!
The smile after the sip of coffee is enough to tell everything 😊
Its so beautiful to still see snow on the mountains with all the greenery in full bloom. This past winter has been so interesting in many ways world wide. The west coast of the states is definitely benefiting from the rain and snow😊
Great Sunday viewing - as always, thank-you for posting!! Wondering if anyone who does videos.. or Martijn himself, knows about how much extra time he spends setting up his phone/camera to film his work, so we all can enjoy? I’ve been curious about that since I started watching him… it’s gotta take a decent amount of extra time - in addition to the editing and uploading process!!
Yes I agree - the time and effort to re-position the camera and then edit the scenes to produce the beautiful videos he gifts us each week.
He explained at some point that he got into a groove with it when on his bike trips so its become 'normal' setting up to film, and I suspect his obvious aesthetic sense is always on the job. He also mentioned from his graphic design background that he is fast at editing. Still its a lot of work and so consistently perfectly executed. Quite the guy.Inspired and inspirational .
Just an idea: A little stone terrace with a low wall would be a great thing to put on the downhill side of the cabin. It gets shade in summer and sun in winter. Perfect spot for your morning coffee! If you need to service a pipe you can pull up the stones for access. The low wall provides for extra seating, as well. Nice communal spot, beautiful valley views.
When the melodious music begins to softly play signaling the closing moments of your video I always feel a little sad for the ending. That’s how wonderful it is to visit your homestead each week- you just want to linger. Thank you . See you next week. 😊
I’m enjoying the beautiful scenery as usual, but up north in the woods at our cabin. Peaceful and serene in both places! ❤
Your perseverance is quite remarkable
I could never help but talk to my chickens. It’s their goofy cooing and pecking around. They actually do make decent little companions! Many thanks for the video!
I think the chickens are really growing on you. It looked very cozy to see them hanging out in the kitchen when you were there, tinkering.
