Nope, just cousins. The alpacas are closely related to llamas and so that makes them a small cousin of llamas.
On the upside, new world camelids, which alpacas are part of do not smell like the old world camelids do.
They Alpacas and Llamas have the sweetest little faces, beautiful animals.

However that’s in the industry side of things and is more to do with their fleece, conformation, and lineage. It’s a blanket statement, but you can vaguely think about it like how a certain dog at a dog show is worth a huge amount, while a mutt at the pound may not be.
