Nasrin Sotoudeh - Protecting human rights in Iran | DW Documentary

Nasrin Sotoudeh has been fighting for children, women and the persecuted in Iran for nearly four decades. The lawyer and human rights activist risks her freedom again and again. Her commitment has made her a symbol of resistance and hope.
38 years and 148 lashes. Even in the face of barbaric punishments, Nasrin Sotoudeh continues her peaceful struggle. A covert camera accompanies her on her mission, showing viewers new sides of Iran. Nasrin has long been compared to other great human rights activists such as Nelson Mandela. Nasrin's 21-year-old daughter Mehraveh has also joined her mother's fight.
With Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, Nasrin founded the Center for the Protection of Human Rights in Iran in 2006. In 2010, she was arrested for defending demonstrators from an opposition movement. A year later, she was sentenced to 11 years in prison. After worldwide protests and appeals to the Iranian government, she was released early in 2013.
But since 2018, the winner of the Sakharov Human Rights Prize has been imprisoned yet again. She is accused of "anti-state propaganda." But even from the notorious Gharchak prison in southern Tehran, the 57-year-old continues her peaceful fight against injustice. Just one example: Nasrin protested the prison conditions for political prisoners during the Corona pandemic with a hunger strike lasting nearly 50 days.

  • “On October 29, 2023 Nasrin Sotoudeh was beaten and arrested for attending the funeral of 16-year-old Armita Geravand, who was killed for not hearing a hijab. Nasrin is being held at Qarchak Women’s Prison which inmates call, 'The end of the world.' She has a heart condition and is experiencing chest pains, but the officials won't let her see a doctor because she 'categorically refuses to wear a hijab' There is no word yet on whether she will be freed or sent back to Evin Prison.” - Reza Khandan

I can never ever imagine my mother to be imprisoned just because she is activist. 2) The sentence "If you force to wear hijab you'll do everything" reminded me of France Laws of "not to wear" same brutal as this. 3)The footage of Nasreen behind glass taking on phone sparked the image of Dr Afia Siddiqui illegally imprisoned in America. 4) Alas to all the brutality on our mothers sisters and overall females. may Allah helps us. • Well, in France hijab is allowed. Only not in - : schools, because some muslim girls are known to be forced to wear it, and this cannot be allowed - in Uni however, they can wear it as it is assumed they are old enough to choose for themselves; also government jobs as this piece of cloth do not represent the country's values. In France, all women are protected, even the muslim. If an imam says they are inferior to men, the mosque where he preaches can be closed for 6 months or so. So is that so bad ?

  • it would also be good if DW (German media) gave coverage over the presence of Hossein Ali Naeiri (an Islamic republic judge who killed 30,000 political prisoners) in Hanover recently. Germany seems to not have changed and still possesses the same lack of empathy for humanity it has also had in the past. it would be good for so-called investigative journalists to also cover this clear lack of respect for humanity.

    • Nothing… it’s a factually wrong statement seems to be based on a German orientalist speech, Professor Christian Bartholomae a century ago that he himself contradicted in his other works and been debunked many times. They couldn’t blame Islam for women rights abolishment as would be politically incorrect (Islamophobia), so they blame Zoroastrianism cause there is no such a thing as Zoroastrianismophobia 😅… Women had plenty of rights during Sassanid Empire, specially compared to other countries ie to own properties, educate, divorce, remarriage, asking for dowry and heirloom. As a matter of fact Borandukht inherited the throne to become an emperor and one of the most famous generals of Sassanid Empire who won many battles against the Muslim army was a woman namely Apranik. It’s obvious that they try hard not to attribute Islam to any of the women rights issues in Iran, even they called the Islamic Revolution, Iranian Revolution and constantly trying to make it an Iranian issue not the Islamic regime ruling in Iran one.

She has stood by the Iranian people and has defended their rights without becoming a stooge of foreign powers and for that sShe has won the hearts and minds of so many who wish freedom for Iranian people without Iran to become a client State of the big powers. The self elected leader of the current movement could learn a lesson or two from her. I bow my head to her and her family for their devotion to freedom for Iranian people.

  • Amazing documentary but this 0:08 statement is totally wrong..!! This statement seems to be mainly based on a speech by Professor Christian Bartholomae on ‘The woman’s rights in the Sassanid’s Empire’ at University of Heidelberg in 1924 and quoted by many. But now we know that it is totally wrong. As a matter of fact if the director of the documentary had read his works completely, would have known that he himself contradicted in many of his works as he, himself show how much rights Iranian women had during the Sassanid Empire all the way till Islamic army conquered Iran. Generally it is true that during the Sassanid Empire many of the women rights reduced but as well as men rights… in most cases, they both reduced equality as it was a class system then and not all ppl had the same rights.. Also as Sassanid became more and more religious specially after 5th century didn’t help much neither. Saying that, it is now proven that all the way till the end of Sassanid Empire (7th-8th century) women had plenty of rights ie to own properties, educate, divorce, remarriage, asking for dowry and heirloom. As a matter of fact during Sassanid Empire, We’ve had Empresses that inherited the throne ie Borandukht, and famous women generals ie Apranik But this statement would be valid if it was from 7th century when Islamic army conquered Iran and during the Arab Empires ruling Iran… but seems that would be politically incorrect to attribute women rights demolishing to Islam (Islamophobic), but there is no Zoroastrianophobic word dictionary so let’s blame that religion. Thus, a century old statement from a factually debunked speech had to be chosen to disconnect the obvious link between Islam and the abolishment of women rights in Iran.
