Oprah w/ Drew Barrymore on Balance, Motherhood, & Her New Tattoo

2024 ж. 15 Мам.
40 290 Рет қаралды

In this unedited, candid interview, actor and talk show host Drew Barrymore opens up to Oprah about the myth of "balance," the emotional story behind her new tattoo, and how the pandemic made her realize that she is stronger and more resilient than she ever thought. The conversation was part of Oprah's Your Life in Focus: Spring Forward Stronger, presented by WeightWatchers, which originally aired on Mother's' Day weekend.
When Oprah asked what she'd learned about herself as a mother during the pandemic, Drew said: "This past year has taught me that I'm capable of things I didn't know I was capable of... and I'm not very complimentary of myself. I'm not one of those woman who's like 'I'm every woman and I can do it!' I'm much more comfortable being self-flagellating, self-loathing, why can't I do things better, why can't I fix this about myself. I'm constantly nipping at my own heels. So for me to say that is such growth, I can't even tell you... It's the biggest growth spurt of my life."

  • I really never knew much about Drew other than seeing her in films, but I absolutely loved her conversation with Oprah. She had such great energy, such wisdom, and kindness to herself and others. I resonated with this segment so much and really didn’t expect that. Thank you WW and Oprah and Drew for being so open and real.

  • Drew being able to be open, honest and relatable is always so refreshing. She's truly one in a billion in an industry where 'best face forward' can be a turn off. Many thanks to her for sharing her personal insight and that she's as human as the rest of us.

  • So agree with Oprah's statement!! A single parent is trying to fill multiple roles, i am sure i went grey early because i was so worried i would loose my job and would not be able to provide for my children!!And society tells us we are bad parents through the education system i was repeatedly told i was not cutting it and i was not good mum by the government, seriously why are we dissing single parents and instead providing them with the support so those children do not fall of the system,,i could not support an instituition that shamed single mums and dads!!!!!

  • Oh My, My, My. Ms. Winfrey you said it. THANK THE GOOD LORD. I also think that people really believe that a single person is supposed to do it all. How dare you not know this or that. And the U S. being the only country that feels this way. I heard that many years ago. Wow wished these things were talked about 40 plus years ago. Thank you for this topic.

    • Apparently, Oprah hasn’t crossed the border into Canada. The US is most definitely not the only country that feels that way. What the hell does she think we do here in Canada and I’m sure many other countries as well. That statement is totally ridiculous, however, like most Americans, she obviously feels that the US is the only country that exists. Thankfully, it’s not.

  • I love that you talked about "Balance" being unattainable...Let me tell you, truth!! Thank you.....I have been a single parent for my daughter's early years and now even married, but with no family support either side, finding balance is crazy. I agree, being staisfied makes more sense and even this, as life has so many ups and downs, is hard...thank you for being transparent...love you both.....It is a crack up sorta situation. My mental health has suffered greatly, as has my body, through the years raising kids, and being expected to be this "super human"...........Women were told to go back to work, because what they had down forever, raising families and being the divinity of the family structure, wasn't good enough. We don't get paid to be home ,being our childs familiar and thus, we pay strangers to watch our kids and make us feel that we aren't valuable until we make "money" in the market. It's time time changes and start recognizing that women can also have jobs at home,if they wish and should be paid to do so......

  • Ironic; just watched a clip of the Drew/Oprah from 1990 when she wrote her book Little Girl Lost. Oprah was downright accusatory towards Drew about her train wreck of a childhood. Cut to 30 years later…Drew must be the most forgiving person on the planet. Anyway, I will never cease to have the utmost admiration for how mind-bogglingly well she turned her life around and seems to be one of the realest, most relatable and genuine people in H-wood. Just adore her.

Their sense of humor (however weird to others) and their hidden soulfulness that are both coming out more out of both of them more visibly just complements one another.. Thankful and no words for how Oprah just continue to be the Queen of heart felt interviews that inspired others like Drew. Lovely and thankful to Drew for honesty towards her imperfections and towards being more visibly soulful.. A blessed Mother's day to all. May more mothers choose and continue to be courageously soulful

The marketing around the "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" mythology needs to be challenged and not revered. Our culture of isolation and the failed nuclear family experiment needs to be challenged too. We're in this together until our last breath.

Someone help her stop talking like she's in a private therapy session. This isn't right to do to someone who thinks they're ready to talk about things they're not ready to talk about. Rambling.
