I think it has to do with the slightly different culture where it's more acceptable to constantly get your ass beat (especially growing up) by elders, siblings, schoolmates, neighbors, etc. For example ... if you had a big head and talked and acted like you were the toughest kid at school or in the neighborhood but actually weren't ... a line will start to form of kids that are going to physically fight you just to show you otherwise. Plus when you're a bit more outdoorsy and in touch with and connected to nature ... nature can be very humbling as it can lead to constant close calls ... if not just kill you a thousand different ways.

@@dr.lyleevans6915 There are a lot of them here in Upstate NY too. Most would at least splurge enough to buy something more than $5 used boots though. Especially someone who talks about how important his feet are to his career. You can get some decent Nike or adidas even for like $40 delivered right to your front door
