Harcourt Burrage examines the argument of authority and how it does not in any way guarantee expertise. This ridiculous situation has fooled many people who believed that they were getting correct information.

  • I find it weird that, unlike any other area of study, you can find hundreds of experts in a language just by walking down a random street in a country that speaks it. The red flag, which unfortunately disqualifies every language course i've ever seen, is when they advertise "you will be speaking the language from the first day" or month. That's not how it works. You need to first _hear_ the language for a really long time, just like learning your first language

  • Let me tell a story. I went to France to study French for a semester. On my first day in country I met another American at the bar who also had just arrived to be with his girlfriend. I He spoke no French at all. I had a year of university French under my belt. I bumped into him at the bar again a few months later and was shocked at his ability to communicate in the French language. He far surpassed me in sounding like a native. He had got a job under the table working construction. It was an important learning experience for me.
