Testing out the evening and nighttime photography capabilities with the iPhone 11 Pro Max around the nightlife capital of Japan, Ōsaka! I'm not specifically testing iPhone 11 Pro night mode with the native camera app, but more just an evaluation of shooting in darker environments, as is common for my photography style.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the images from the iPhone 11 Pro Max and surprised by how well the files held up when editing them in Lightroom, considering they aren't raw images. At times, the iPhone sharpening was a little too strong, especially when using it with night mode enabled, but on closer inspection, it appears that the strength of the sharpening seems stronger when viewed on smaller screens with higher pixel density.
Throughout my time in Japan, I've also been filming a lot with the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I will be posting some results from the camera very soon, once I've captured more footage from Tokyo and an overall review of my thoughts on it as a filmmaker. Make sure to subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications to receive updates of when those videos go live!

Correction: night mode _is_ available on the tele lens. For whatever reason, I couldn’t make it work on the day I was filming this which surprised me and prompted me to mention it. I’ve since re-tried and it does work as expected 👍
The guys from Halide are claiming that night mode _is_ available in 2x but _not_ on the tele lens, instead the iPhone uses the wide angle lens and digitally zooms in
Yeah, I’ve heard it uses the wide lens but crops in.
I believe the night time mode is available on both the wide lenses but not the telephoto
Night mode available on 2x. I believe that is not a crop from the 1x because photos retains quite good resolution an sharpness. If it would be a crop those would have worse quality than what I get I think. Just MHO.
Joe Allam - not a wide enough aperture on the 2x. The other comments here are correct - it’s cropping in on the 1x lens. So, you’re losing resolution, but at least getting the shot.
Two of my favorite things in a single video. Photography and Japan
I see joe in Japan, I click 🤷🏻♂️
Haha! I get to Japan, I click... 😏
Joe shows what a skilled photographer can do with a smartphone. I love his custom color grading. Cameras have gone through major changes the past including the 35mm rangefinder, color film, SLR, compacts, auto-exposure, DSLR, MILC (mirrorless) and now the smartphone with computational photography. In some ways it's never been a better time to be a photographer. Thanks for the great videos Joe.
The best “review” of the new iPhone I’ve watched. As always, your videos are intelligent, thoughtful, and authentic. I’m not upgrading my phone anytime soon (saving for the Sigma 85mm art lens), but your your vid awesome 👏
Thanks, Cindy! That 85mm lens looks like a beautiful lens to shoot with - I hope you get to play with it soon!
Great work Joe! Absolutely love your Japan videos and photos. Great information about the camera and good ideas for scenes etc. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Very much appreciated!
your voice makes my ears feel good
I really love your production quality of your videos! Such a treat every time you upload
Japan is so aesthetic 🔥
Yay you guys are in Japan! Osaka is one of my faves! Love Shinsekai at night.
8:39 not correct, I have the 11 pro. You can use night mode on both the wide angle and the telephoto lens, it’s only the ultrawide you can’t use the night mode on.
L S *incorrect
i cant believe how beautiful japan is!
Nice what lens does Elly use for the Fuji? Also are you filming with the iPhone 11 Pro for this episode or the LUMIX GH5
i freaking miss Osaka so much, would love to go back in the future!
Brilliant video, really interesting and balanced assessment.
Thanks! I've been mostly impressed with the camera for photography, but equally will always have a few things that will keep me true to my bigger cameras
Hi Joe! This is an awesome video. May I ask what do you think about the lens flare on 11Pro? it's quite obvious on my friend's device and this is the biggest reason to stop me from upgrading. I can a bit of flare at 8:13 but it doesn't seem to be bad at all.
Looking forward to your videography review with this iphone
Hi Joe really enjoyed this vlog and video, the phone seem very good for what it does, and as always you explained everything very clearly, think I will stick with my camera though, all the very best to both of you, and thanks for everything you both do.
Cheers! There's always gonna be a place for our larger cameras, but I honestly think this year's smartphones have made a huge impression on me!
I can’t wait to use my iPhone 11 pro, thanks for the review
beautiful video, in seeing the images all the drawers of memories were opened.😁😁💯💯💯💯🇮🇹
Thank you! That’s such a great metaphor by the way ☺️
Great video! What aspect ratio you use in your videos? What is the name of animation title you are using, is it bundled in Premiere pro or I can buy this preset somewhere? Thx in advance.
What are you using to correct the wide angle distortion, looked like decent results 👌
good thing in the default photos app, perspective correction for photos and videos are super easy, also ultrawides gives a lot of correction leeway. for street light photos maybe deep fusion will be dope
Awesome video! And i share your love for japan as well. What an amazing place i miss it !
Cool pics! And that was interesting about the one second exposure. I wonder if third party apps will give you more control over that and give you the motion blur. And good to know that the the night mode actually still looks like the picture was taken at night. Other reviewers used the night mode feature in a dark room and it did just make it look like the lights were on or that it was daytime.
Great video and beautiful photos Joe! :)
Many thanks! I really enjoyed shooting in Osaka and have many more areas I want to explore next time!
Top video, really enjoyed it so I had to subscribe 👍
*I loved it! iPhone, photography and Japan.*
Good video! I was just looking for this, a real life scenario where you edit the photos after shooting them, I think I'm getting an 11 Pro, still looks like a good camera in 2021
Hi Joe, I'm a fan from Taiwan. Can I ask how do you find themes/ moments to shot in your ordinary life?
You get longer exposure time when you have it on a tripod for night mode. I’m sure you’ve figured that out by now though. Great video!
Hey Joe! First time on your channel. Can you shoot some small videos using only the iPhone 11 pro video editing tools? I would really love to see that. My new job kind of requires me to shoot videos/photos and produce small 30 to 45 sec videos and edit/upload them on social media on the spot (yes that fast lol) and I would love to see how the new iPhone 11 pro does it . Currently using an iPhone 7 plus and would love to see how 11 pro does it. I tried using the galaxy s9 plus and not really feeling the love for the Galaxy editing tools LOL. Did I mention I'm new to all this video and photo thing lol ..
Hey Joe, just checked and night might is working on the zoom for me.
how about the camera reflection /glare /flare issue. Can you give me some tips to avoid this? I am having difficulties avoiding the reflections of the lens. Makes me sad that I can't use my precious photos. Ps: I don't know how to photoshop so..
Fantastic video. Video footage recorded with iPhone 11 Pro?
I was also in Osaka (and also visited Kyoto, Nara,..) and absolutely loved taking low light photography with my iPhone 11 (normal one). Also Osaka was quite lovely, so different than Tokyo!
I'm so happy to watch the video which takes the photos of the place where I live in now!
Weh? Nice
Incredible. I'm thinking about getting an iPhone 11 Pro midnight green.
The midnight green was such a surprise release from Apple, but it's so very welcome!
@@joeallam I agree with you.
I've been there!!! :D I had a 7 at the time so I didnt take very many pictures. Great to see it again in this light.
How do you do the angle distortion correction? Is that in the phone? Or are you using lightroom for that?
please review the 12 pro max when it comes out next month. I just rewatched this video haha :D
that "唔駛喇" sounds so accurate!
YAY! finally someone knows about Hitachi!
Hello Allen, do you usually put on a case on your 11 pro?
Some of these shots were beautiful, which says as much about your photography as it does about the iPhones camera quality 👌
I'm interested in where you were shooting in Osaka before going to the Rugby? I will be there for a few days early next year and would like to check it out. Thanks.
The area is called Shinsekai - pretty popular spot with the tower taking centre stage!
You were also in Osaka! Did you eat delicious food? I often go to the Sinsekai and Dotonbori for photography!
It's hard not to eat good food _anywhere_ in Japan! Okonomiyaki has a special place in my belly though 😋
Would love to see this kind of review with a mate 30 pro device :)
At the begining of the video, please what's the name of the music and where did you buy it? Thank you.
Ahggggg I was loving the footage at 10-11 min w blurred background thinking all footage was shot on iPhone 11 but then you mentioned it was your separate professional cam
May I ask, what would be your app of choice for shooting RAW images on an iPhone?
Love the choice to edit the photos. It lets people see what can be done with the camera- they can go elsewhere for straight OOC
7:34 ugh the jelly effect on the moving train
Willi Kampmann Yeah what's with that? Is that something that's unique to smartphone cameras or....?
Yone Zawa no it's proper to every camera using cmos censors combined with electronic shutter, a proper camera using a mechanical shutter will be less prone to the rolling shutter effect due to cmos sensors
Joe, quick one, you clearly just shoot using the native camera app and then do you just import straight into Lr mobile to edit your shots with your presets? The iPhone generates HEIC files but isn’t it similar to editing a jpeg?! Would it not be better to use Moment app to shoot a raw file for editing (although missing out on the new night mode features etc.) i’m just curious as to what your best experience has been. I shoot Leica/Fuji/Sony cameras normally but am finally coming round to my iPhone 11 Pro being a semi-decent photo taking tool. Keep up the good work with the channel!
That's correct! I've actually found the HEIC files hold up way better than jpg files when editing, so it's actually less of a step backwards. The main benefit to smart HDR is actually a result of less editing needed as more accuracy is captured at time of shot. The things I miss mostly with shooting raw would be colour shifts and white balance correction though.
Hello friend, next month I will go to Japan and I will buy the Iphone 11 Pro, will I be able to silence the camera? Is it really impossible as everyone say? thanks for your help.
This just goes to show that you absolutely don't need the best and newest camera gear to take stunning pictures. You have a capable camera in your pocket right now! (Doesn't have to be the 11pro either!)
Hi whn i use in night time .feeling lots of noise , any suggestions
Very glad to be upgrading from iPhone 8 Plus to 11 Pro Max. That night mode is killing it.
Do you think the photos are good enough for print?
Is the iphone11 pro max is openline? I mean it can be use here in tha philippines?
Is the iphone11 pro max openline? I mean, it can be use in any country like philippines?
Thanks !
Nice video!
Love that shot @ 7:35 . It's also amazing how great phone cameras have gotten. There's really no legit excuse for not having "good enough" gear anymore. Just be creative go out & do it!
Great video! What a shame that the iPhone doesn't have ultrawide shape correction like Samsung phones. That's one of the things I am missing from the switch.. (S10+ to iP11PM)
Do u shot with HDR or with Deep Fusion?
I want the new iPhone but my bank account says no. 😭
S.wanderlust you don’t need a new iPhone. You just need passion for photography and VSCO ;)
vitalis yea , true. Been using VSCO since it came out , oh and Lightroom is a lifesaver 🙌🏻
@@s.wanderlust8894 Keep it up!
Yes I gotta agree Ultra wide isn't the greatest especially with Night mode but if your shooting in a very spacious uncrowded space like a lake for example it can be really good. But if your in a city like you were it won't be the greatest coz too much is going on at once if you know what I mean.
I found the issue that iphone 11 pro max has a huge Flare/Reflex when use nightmode and point directly to the light source. Any one got this issue ?
I’ve been to Japan 8 times and I’ve never been to Osaka!! Oh and by the way I just got the iPhone 11, I wish it got more love on KZhead considering in most ways it’s effectively the same as the pro in many ways.
what font that you used for the title ?
Got mine yesterday. And holy hell the cameras are good. (Hobby photographer)
Starting from 9:22 onwards, obviously your videographer used a lighting to light your face, based on the soft shadow it produces. May I know what lighting been used?
Just using the lighting from the shop in front of me as I’m holding the camera ☺️
Hitachi have been big business in the UK (and Europe) for a while now as they're delivering a lot of the newer (and better) trains
Yup! As I was editing this video I looked into the numbers a bit further and was surprised to see they're one of the largest "hardware" tech brands in Japan. Their revenue is actually larger than Sony's!
@@joeallam Great videos BTW and nice point you made about real world locations rather than trying to force a situation just to test out night mode etc.
Cheers! I feel the same way when it comes to the common methods of stress-testing autofocus modes I frequently see.
Yeah, the f2.4 on the ultrawide and lack of night mode makes it the worst choice for lowlight shots. Good work sticking with the wide's f1.8.
Love the quality!
I think night mode is available on the telephoto lens!! It's unavailable only on ultrawide
Hmm that’s weird. I thought the same originally too, but then when filming this I explicitly noticed I couldn’t get it on the tele. I’ve just tried it again now by covering the lens and night mode was activated. Maybe it requires slightly darker conditions? Thanks for the correction.
night mode on the tele is just a crop of the main sensor !
You have quite a sympathic way to present your thing. Not as loud as many other KZheadrs. And not fanboi-ing the iPhone... Very important to mention that a phone will not replace a real camera (with larger sensors) and that the phone photos take only little further editing because they are already heavily processed in- phone.
Did you film this with an iPhone 11 pro? If not; why?
UK Number One
What's the difference between iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 pro?
What is a price 11 pro in Japan plz reply
Nice Video! Nice Phone! Nice City! GodBlessU!
Brother try it in deep fusion also 🙂
Upload more videos of Japan please
A little bit of motion blur for subject in motion in night photo wold be better
This is such a great video man, I've been on the fence of getting the 11 pro and night time photography was really the make or break. I wanted to see how much noise would get caught in these images, my xs catches just way too much.
Glad I could help out! I'd recommend viewing your images on different screens/print though. I've found the iPhone shots can actually look a little noisy simply because of the screen size compression, versus when viewed larger
@@joeallam Oh that could definitely be a factor, the compression on instagram also doesn't help. Thanks for the reply!
3:38 - I think I saw you in the photo that youre taken !! 🙂
I don't see too much lens flare in your shots, did you do something about it? I am really annoyed by it.
This or a x100f?
amazing camera!!
Im starting to like the iphone 11 more but since i cant afford it il stic with my XR
Trading it in at Apple is also an option Most people forget that they can even do that
The 11 is also cheaper than the XR by $50
@@Meister_Dwight xr is $599 currently tho
fightnight14 Yes, just depends on when they bought it. If they could afford it at $749, they can afford $699. Even at $599 for XR, $100 more for the 11 is still a great deal for what you’re getting.
joe pls do samsung galaxy note 10 plus photography
Please review Nokia 9
I loved your accent!! hahaha
Do you live in Japan?
I want a full frame sensor on a phone :(
The biggest sensor we've ever had in a phone was in the Nokia 1020. Still merking all flagships phone cameras to this day.
What kind of optics would you want on that?
Fachy Marin lol. Probably when you’re shooting in raw. But when it comes to auto, yeah keep lying to yourself. And as overall, all including video, selfie, and lowlight all flagship smartphones today is far far better than that. You should really stop being an ignorant prick.
I just want a 9mp 1/1.2 sensor on this and nothing more
1” sensor is enough
Yay
Joe, I was shooting at night between my Canon 80D-210mm vs. my phone 11 pro max. I have noticed that the pictures from my phone is better looking and less noise than the one from my dslr. Smart HDR and low light on phone amazed me!
The onboard processing power of smartphones these days is seriously impressive. Traditional cameras still have raw optical physics as an advantage, but imagine what they could do if they had the processors from these smartphones!
Joe Allam Joe; that’s exactly what I was thinking as well. What’s the hold up with dslr companies? Is that their ace card?
Infinite Cloud they are traditional camera companies, not tech companies. Sony seems to be the only one somewhat capable and willing to infuse more software algorithms into their cameras but even they are pretty conservative in that regard. Part of me wonders whether after the shift from analog to digital this will usher in the next mass extinction of camera companies that couldn’t adapt.
Willi Kampmann I once was thinking that way. Now my perception changed after I own and used both. There is an invisible connection between human interaction with DSLR and its hype and legacy and what it capable of. Something very small, like the ergonomics, grip, look, smell, and feel of the DSLR that makes it special. I think DSLR is not just a tool, but a jewelry as well.
I have the iPhone 11 Product Red
