3 out of 4 match points saved were winners or unreturnable shots. Capriati was the risk taker on those match points and Hingis was just waiting for an error.
Capriati always went down swinging no matter what. Everyone loved that about her. She was not afraid to play anyone anywhere.
Jm7804. Yes and no. In this match, definitely yes. Yet in her 3 3rd set tiebreak losses at the us open in the semis, she actually seemed to tighten up. Playing Monica was a tall order in the first but against Henin she let off the gas and let Justine dictate, and against Dementieva who could barely serve 65mph side arm serves she definitely tightened up. She had a lot of talent and was very quick around the court, but I think she could have won far more majors than she did.
I’d like to see a closer look at that last one, that was very close, it may have caught the line. Capriati was clearly still in the point, so not saying that it would have given Hingis the win
I don't think anyone would have known at the time that this was an end for both of them. Neither of them reached a grand slam final again.
And that was not because they declined in effort or talent it was because the William sisters took over with their incredible Power. Jennifer won 3 slams after making her comeback which she richly deserved. This time she played to satisfy herself not expectations placed by her family and the press. She was ready here to deal with the adult pressure of competition and wasn’t afraid to lose because she honestly tried from her desire rather than trying to meet the goals others expected of her.
Hingis played just one more Grand Slam, actually. Seems to me that has more to do with her not winning any more [before her retirement], than the Williams sisters 🤣
@@fundhund62not true she played slams until the end of this year 2002 and then played 2006-2007 slam season
@@bryguy0111 I was talking before her retirement, and even said so specifically. She did not play Roland Garos and Wimbledon that year.
Capriati not only reached the RolandGarros final but also won it that year how could u say neither of them reached a grandslam final after this.Hingis actually beat both the Williams sisters back to back to reach the 2002Australian open final but her legs were worn out by Capriati in the final

Honestly i didnt get into Martina until 2001 . This match was a heartbreaker. I really wanted her to win it.

Not a huge Capriati fan but I'm glad she had her moment here. She deserved her slams after a hell of a time in her youth. And i do sometimes wonder if she would have been able to challenge the Graf/Seles dominance had she not derailed.
I´m sure she would had been over Graf and Seles. Her game was very consistent and only needed a bit of experience and strategy. It's a pity, I think we could have enjoyed of a next level tennis had she been focused
She managed to deny Graf a second Olympic gold medal, which would've been historic. She made the quarters or better in 9 of the 14 slams she played during her first 4 years on tour. Graf can't even touch that record. She made the quarters or better in 3 of the 13 slams she played in her first 4 years and way worse than that if you include her garbage amateur years. It would be a big zero if you include those. Monica made the quarters or better in 10 of 13 slams played in the first 4 years. Jennifer was on track to be a great player and wheels came off in late 1993. Her and Monica were good friends and the stabbing had a profound effect on a then 17 year old Capriati. Of course it didn't phase Mrs. Parche one bit.

Hingis shouldn’t have been passive and she probably would have won. Scared tennis always comes back to bite you in tight situations. All those shots coming into her backhand which was her better side yet she hit the majority right up the middle with little pace even when she had time to step in and at least take it early to take time away from Jennifer or maybe even a dropper. Kudos to Jen though.

@@Dancingontgesun1942 you sound ignorant. She literally played points more aggressive before/after the match points shown here. Anyone who watched the match knows they were tired and the heat came into play but that didn’t stop from being aggressive at times during the 2nd and 3rd set.
@@detee7256 Have you ever played in the final of a week long tennis tournament , in 100 degree heat? I have. I've also watched 90% of every televised match Hingis has played. Not to mention my experience as a high level player and a coach. Hingis was physically and mentally beat, saying anything else just proves how ignorant and inexperienced in tennis you are. Literally there are two example in this video of Hingis having a more aggressive approach coming forward on one example and hitting a flatter backhand up the line for a clean winner for the other. But noooo she couldn’t have step it up on 1 of 4 match points.

Hingis played so conservatively on the match points… I don’t think this would be the case, had the FO 99 debacle not happened. It really took away her ability to win tight matches at the highest level.
Totally agree - I have wondered the same thing... She looked so tentative on championship point - I was surprised she didnt try to find her way into net on one of those championship points - she had won most of her net points in the match up to that point.
@@mikeg8375 totally agree. She was just waiting for unforced errors that didn’t come. This AO 2002 was heartbreaking, both for her and Seles. It really was the last chance for them to win something big.
Hingis waited for opponents to implode, which obviously was not the right tactic in this case.
@jm7804 Sad thing is, she won many points at the net this match. Even without the firepower off the ground, she could have used that tactic more often on the big points. I think she would have won.

The problem with Hingis is her shots have no power, it doesn’t skid off the court it just bounces up to the sky and asks to be dealt with

Hingis just never believed she could win another slam - in all of her match points she was very passive and scared, waiting for Capriatti to make a mistake. I maintain that when Graf broke her mentally in 99, she never recovered and never agAin believed she could win when it really counted.

Imagine the career Capriati could've had if she learned how to step into a forehand.
Actually her off the backfoot or reverse forehand helped her win this match. There were times when she has no choice but to hit a reverse forehand to get the ball in and counterattack. If she had a more traditional orthodox forehand , she would miss a lot more forehands. Her forehand is very much like Pete Sampras and Lindsay Davenport. Their reverse forehand technique is not a product of laziness or bad form but rather their way of adapting to the increasing speed of the game. If in any given rally, they are able to hit a reverse forehand that is able to diffuse heavy and fast shots and send them back with as much if not more conviction, then why not?
@@quiddy I would never debate the benefits of having a reverse forehand in the arsenal. My criticism of Capriati (and Roddick, good god) is that she never hit a forehand any other way. If you're NOT hitting a reverse forehand, and you have time to set up, all you're doing with that super-open stance is robbing yourself of power. You're getting no legs into the shot at all. All arm. I can't stress enough that such a stance is fine in many instances, but when it's your stance for every forehand you hit, you're wasting potential.
@@papigringo5692 also Capriati hits the ball with her elbows tucked in or close to her body so even if she hits an open stance forehand, the shot is powered by the uncoiling of the upper body. So except for when she’s hitting a reverse, every other forehand of hers leverages her upper body uncoiling. She keeps her arm relatively in sync with her upper body movement until her follow through at which point the arm extends through

You have the wrong definition of karma. karma involves your having done something bad to someone else before you experience the same predicament later on. But Jen didn’t do anything bad to Hingis. Hingis lost it.

Poor Hingis, she was dominated by the rise of power players (Davenport, Williams, Pierce, Capriati).. Despite that, she managed to reached 12 slams single finals, winning 5 of em.. Had Hingis compete in the era of Navratilova/Evert or Graf & Seles, she would've won more slams, maybe 10++
Yeah, poor thing. Head-to heads are 6-7 against Serena, 11-10 against Venus, 5-4 versus Capriati, 10-12 versus Davenport, 10-3 against Pierce, 14-5 against Seles. Seems like you don´t know what domination means. A little hint: Davenport (4-10), Clijsters (2-7), Mauresmo (2-10) and Sharapova (2-20 😅🤣) actually WERE dominated by Serena.
