*HAMSTER BALL:* •Their toes can get stuck in the ventilation slits, breaking them. •They don't have enough ventilation. •The hamster can't stop the ball, and it can crash into walls, hurting them. •Hamster balls cause disorientation and stress. •Most hamster balls are too small. •Hamster balls can cause infections from urine and faeces build up. •They trap heat. There are many other reasons, but these are the main problems! •The lids can fall off easily, making it easy for them to escape and get lost! *SMALL CAGE:* Can't fit the necessary enrichment that a hamster needs to live a good life. This leads to stress behaviours, such as monkey barring, bar chewing, cage aggression, cage pacing and wall scaling. Stress isn't good for hamsters, as they can get a serious disease called wet tail, which is fatal. Hamsters need a large cage with lots of enrichment! *WIRE/MESH WHEELS:* Hamsters can get their legs/toes stuck in them, which can break them. Running on mesh for an extended period of time can lead to bumble foot, which is where the foot swells up, and it is incredibly painful. *PINE/CEDAR BEDDING:* Softwood shavings like pine and cedar release aromatic phenols and toxic acids that damage the lungs and windpipe (trachea) of your hamster. Finally people who actually know how to take care of hamsters
I used to have gerbils and they have a few things in common but are also quite different, but I made sure I thoroughly researched them before we even were allowed to adopt them. We had an enrichment habitat, a play pen, a solid wheel, and never a ball.
And paper bedding and lots of cardboard rolls to chew
But what if the hamster is smol, do I still have to get a huge cage
@@Happyfroggynot huge but enough space for the hamster to be able to walk around to their heart’s content.
Wait, mesh wheels are a thing? Bro imagine if your treadmill had holes in it and how dumb of an idea that would be
IKR?
Real like bro what ya fo there-
Mesh wheels are actually for gerbals not hamsters people just buy it for them and no they don't hurt the gerbals
@@matcha_berry514it’s so dumb how people can’t identify a gerbil with a hamster and just assume things like “oh they’re the same thing, rodents schmodents I bet my hamster will be SOOOO happy! it needs to work out too I hate how fat it is, I should probably stop feeding it for a week and maybe it’ll look better hehehhe” like people are like that sometimes 😭 can’t even take care of a hamster in this generation
I appreciate this video so much people really need to be informed about hamster care. And the song is super fun too lol

Oh my gosh- my heart skipped a beat- I didn’t read safe alternatives and saw the giant enclosure and I got terrified-
Oh no! I hope no one else thought that! 😬
@@PancaketheHamster lol I did! Had to rewatch it and realized it’s safe
Me not noticing the "safe alternatives" text and running to get my hamster out of her large full of enrichment cage
I got two Life360 notifications while watching this telling me my mom and dad are home but the crazy thing is they were exactly on beat💀
Accutally aspen bedding is safe for hamsters!
ok, ik this is out of context but... Why did the unlabeled shavings look like fingernails to me-💀😭
I didn’t know hamsters balls were unsafe til this vid thanks
Yeah there paws can get caught in the gaps
same! luckily my hamster was fine but if i had a hamster now I'd take better care of him
I really appreciate that someone’s actually showing what’s safe and not
NO BATHING WITh WATER BIG NO NO😨
thank you for this information!!
Glad it was helpful! 🐹💕
Totally agree with all of this, these videos are good because some people who are new to hamsters don’t know much. 👌🏿👌🏿
Love that you included both safe alternatives and reasons as to why the originals are unsafe!
yall better listen to them, my hamster had the shaving bedding and now he's got sticky eye I switched to the recommended bedding and he's doing better
Thank you so much❤it is so many people in the world who are buying small cages, hamster ball’s and a lot of other stuff that are bad for hamsters
probably why my hamster died so soon 💀 she used a hamster ball and had a small cage 😭
I'm so sorry for your loss 😔❤️
im so srry for ur loss, but i think its kind of disrespectful to use the emoji "💀" & "😭" after you say ur hamster died. people neglect hammys all the time and i dont support that becuz they are just like cats and dogs. they are pets that we shouldnt neglect becuz of their size.
@@mjhemdal..
@@BabzLikesChickenNuggetsu missed the point, ain’t nobody using 💀 when they are genuinely sad about something. It’s used for jokes and things that aren’t serious. That’s what they meant.
@@BabzLikesChickenNuggets “haha my dad is dead”. No, just no. Doesn’t work like that. Their joking about how they killed their hamster. There’s a thing call SICK jokes.
You use hamster ball to transport hamster to safe location by carrying it or you could use a measuring cup or literally anything that can hold something in a small cage is useful for if you need a deep cleaning of your little hamsters home
Another thing. Try not to buy pets at pet stores line petco and pet smart, instead look around your local shelters and stuff. Mine actually have some Guinea pigs
Very true! Thanks for this! 🐹💕
What about pets at home
I got my 4 guinea pigs at pets at home, I'm not aware of any shelters that would have rodents near me :(

Thank you for informing people about this issue. I hate these products with every fiber of my being. So thank you for that.
Me too I especially hate people that can only afford the hurtful products and not the pricey stuff 😡😡
@@Nathan._.1yeah if you can’t afford to buy the proper enrichment don’t get a hamster
@@Nathan._.1 can’t afford the necessity then do not purchase a hamster
@@masterham2173but if you already got a hamster then what can you do? Then kill him? What the absolute fuck
If you don’t have a play pen you can put them in the bath tub while it’s completely dry and cover the drain
I don’t have a bath tub just showers lol
You know, the rabbit community is trying to tell people what's unsafe for their rabbits because some people aren't educated enough to know that hutch's and cages are very unhealthy. The rabbit and hamster community should partner up🙂
True! I really like rabbits and have researched lots about them, and I think sharing that information would be useful, but I have never owned or had experience with them, and I prefer to have experience with animals before I try to educate people about them! 🐹💕
Spread your words honey, everybody needs to know about proper hamster care ♥️

You say that now: When you get one and realise how much money that will all cost for only 2-3 years...

A lot of people sue small cage or items like that has a decoration and it makes me really sad
It’s good to know other people know stuff about their hamsters I see lots of owners using hamster balls which is very dangerous for them.
Also no water baths!!! Sand baths work.
Finally a good hamster Owner!
The cage u showed is the cage I have but I told my mum and she said it's big enough even thought it's 60cm only so I'm getting a 90cm or 80cm one for my hamsters health for Christmas which is in 2 months so hopefully she will be fine gor now I adopted her 2 weeks ago Edit 3 month later: uhm my hamster broke its tooth from biting the bars and my mum wouldn't let me get the cage , my mum got her wet and now she has a cold so in trying to keep her warm , Please give advise on a hamster with a cold
That cage is NOT big enough. Please look up Victoria Rachel on KZhead and show your mom
A suggestion is to give your hamster more outside of cage time if you have safe means to do so. That’ll help them feel at least a bit less castrophobic
that’s still not big enough. i recommend getting a 40 gallon fish tank if u can.
@@cockroach8823 they arent talking about fish

Small cages, no, no no no no
I didn’t see the part where it said “safe alternative” so I was like.. this girl is about to get a piece of my fucking mind today. 😂😅
I’m literally depressed bc my hamster is getting very old and I fear I have barley anymore time left with her. She is the best hamster I ever had. I love her so much and I wish she could live forever. She doesn’t remember me and gets scared when I speak. I missed the days we would free roam her in my room and she would ask for pets. It’s almost been 3 years. I love you flower 😭
I'm so sorry that you are going through that! That's really sad! It sounds like Flower has had an amazing life with an owner that cares about them very much, and has almost lived to three years, which is very old for a hamster! It's so sad that hamsters have such short lifespans! 😭
R.I.P Pancake We Miss You ❤
Also your hammy is super cute and I have a hammy and he is only 2 months old is there anything that I should know? Also I live in a really cold climate like below zero at times so again is the anything I need to know?
Thank you! I would recommend to have a deep layer of paper-based substrate, as it insulates the enclosure better than wood shavings! It is a good idea to have a portable heater to heat the room and, if your hamster cage is by a wall, put a blanket inbetween the cage and the wall to insulate it more! It is a good idea to monitor the temperature of the room with a thermometer, to make sure it stays between 18-23°C (65-75°F)! Make sure to block off any draughts and close windows! A heating pad under one side of the cage is also a good idea! I hope this helps! 🐹💕
@@PancaketheHamster thanks!

@@PancaketheHamster thank you🩷💔
hey I have a question? so I have two guinea pigs and there water bottle is constantly leaking and making there cage wet we've bought several water bottles but each one we have the same problem with do you have any suggestions?
I would recommend using a water bowl instead! A heavy, shallow ceramic or glass bowl that can't be tipped over is best! Make sure to check for chips and cracks daily, and replace if you find any! You could also use disinfected pebbles to weigh down the bowl, or use velcro to stick it down, to prevent it from falling over! You will need to refill the bowl at least twice a day, and keep it away from their food. It is also a good idea to get a bowl that has measurement lines inside of them, so you can monitor how much water your guinea pigs are drinking! Using a water bowl and a water bottle is a good idea, or two water bowls, just in case one leaks/tips over! It is also important to remove and replace any wet bedding! I don't know as much about guinea pigs as I do hamsters, but this is what I found out when researching! Please do your own research as well, and decide which one is best for you and your guinea pigs! 🐹💕

Hi! I just wanted to share something that happened in my own experience owning mice, and maybe it will help someone, but yeah here’s my story. So basically, one day I noticed my mice were scratching their ears a lot. I didn’t think too much of it until a few days later, they had lost fur from so much scratching. There were no vets nearby that could help, so I did a lot of research and found out my 2 mice had mites. I thoroughly cleaned everything in their cage, and started giving them this cream that was supposed to help kill the mites and help with the itching. Their conditions didn’t get much better for about 8 months. They were bleeding and had a lot of fur loss. It was really sad and their fur never grew back in. Unfortunately, after I had both of them for about 2 years, one got a tumor and passed away. Exactly a week later the other passed from depression as they were seriously bonded. It was very sad, but here’s the point of my story. The mice got mites from either their bedding or wooden toys I bought at the pet store. So, the point of the story is, freeze your bedding to kill any mites that could be in it before putting it into your small animal’s enclosure.
Thank you for sharing this story. I'm so sorry for your loss 😔❤️
I have a miniature hamster, I put her in the ball rarely, just when she has a lot of energy, and it is perfectly fine for her. She never gets her feet stuck in it and I only put her on the carpet with it so it does not roll to fast and bump into things. 😃

I’m the same but with my gerbil. At first I really wanted to get a ball for her, but my very logical mother said that they get stressed out in them. I also have a learned cage for her and we only give her sawdust from the pet store! Also your hamster is adorable!
make sure(if she is still alive) to get her a freind! gerbils are very social animals(unlike hamsters) and get depressed when alone
Yayyyy im so happy hamster care is improving and more and more people are taking better care of them! ❤
I agree, a lot of those things are horrible for rats too❤❤
Imagine your hamster getting lost in all that bedding in the large cage, what if it was dead under there and you would never know 😭😭😂
The hamster wouldn't get lost. The cage isn't that big. At night, the hamster will dig itself out of its burrows, which is what it would do on the wild, so they couldn't get lost in the bedding. You would know if they had passed, as you wouldn't hear/see them come out at night and nothing in the cage would have moved. A hamster can die in a small cage, but it wouldn't have had a good quality of life. It would be much happier with lots of space to run around and deep bedding to dig in.
@@PancaketheHamster oh yeah Ik :) I’m getting my hamster a big cage soon because I want him to be happy :D
@@1-R-A-Y-1 That's brilliant! 🐹💕
What if I have only a small space? What type of enclosure should I use???
The minimum hamster cage size is 80x50x50cm (in the UK, Germany's is 100x50x50cm), with a min. of 6 inches of bedding (preferably 10 inches) and min. 8 inch wheel for a dwarf, min. 11 inch wheel for a syrian. This enclosure also needs multiple hideouts, enrichment, and a sand bath. This is the absolute bare minimum when it comes to properly caring for a hamster. If you don't have enough space for a decently sized cage, then it may be best to give the hamster away to someone who can properly look after them, and provide them with the space they need! 🐹💕
What if I can't afford that, and I already have a hamster? He has a pretty large cage with a lot of bedding, but it isn't as big as that and I use like 3-4 inches of bedding and my parents say that's too much. But it's not, but I just can't afford all of that. And I want my hamster to be as happy and healthy as possible.
Finally someone who knows whats really good for hamsters. I see so much of all of these, especially small cages. ITS ALWAYS THE LITTLE KIDS
For the hamster ball, here’s another alternative if you want your hamster to run around! Put a towel down in your shower/bathtub, sprinkle some treats down, and let your hamster run around. I also put a wheel in there sometime
That looks exactly like mine hamster 🐹
I had a hamster the cage was okay size not too big not too small, The hamster did literary nothing on that wheel it just sometimes slept in it nothing else💀
I genuinely don’t know why products that are proven to be dangerous are still allowed to be sold, I got an act octopus cushioned tunnel for my ferret and found out after buying it that it is easily torn on the inside where you can’t see and ferrets can get caught in the layers and suffocate without the owner being able to notice, several stories of people having dead and injured ferrets yet it’s still for sale

Don’t do the play pen one unless you know your hamster can’t jump very high or get a top my hamster managed to jump out of its playpen. I found him luckily and this time I had to buy a top
Hamsters can't jump very high, but they may be able to climb out of a wire playpen! They may also be able to chew out of a fabric playpen! Playpens are important for hamsters, as they need to be able to run around outside of their cage to exercise! Supervision is important whenever they are out of their cage! 🐹💕
