    • Why would someone get promoted? It's standard procedure. It's called a "go-around", which is an aborted landing. They basically just make a turn and try again (hence the term go-around). Happens also when there's sudden strong winds and other unexpected shit happening before landing and the pilot thinks that it would be unsafe to land.

    • @BewareTheIdes Dude ! Either you've never looked from inside a widebody cockpit, or you're doing it lazily or for fun which is NOT a pilot behavior. Go check again : www.airliners.net/photo/Lufthansa/Airbus-A340-313/1601865/L/ And why talk about 1000ft AGL anyway ? Don't you know a common final is made at ~3 deg angle ? Can't you monitor inside a 10 deg conic field of view with such good visibility without facing the sun ? How could you fail to notice a plane that large as a Boeing 767 ? I'm not blaming the A340 pilot (yet), but I just don't believe you can miss the landing plane unless you assumed there is no plane at all in direct vinicity (in terms of flight rules) Don't blame the Airbus A340 if you don't know it well. Don't blame the C17 either, its cockpit is based on the YC15, MD11 and the Boeing 767, and has one of the largest (side) cockpit windows ever built (just like the MD11 and the Tristar) ----- At first glance, one to get blamed is the ATC, which should NEVER give clearance to a runway crossing plane while another was cleared to land, on the same runway. Yet, the A340 did have rwy crossing clearance. Why ? Because rwy02 is supposed to be crossed without strong clearance as it is usually not the runway in use. The A340 actually did cross that runway three times; the incident occured on the third crossing. Did the A340 saw the 767 on final ? YES ! the A340 copilot did (maybe too late but he did) then the captain accelerated the crossing. A few second later the UTAir initiated a going around and the A340 copilot aknowledged that. Not seeing the landing 767 is out of the question. The question is how runway crossings are handled at Barcelona Airport. And there, you're in Spain, not USA which has stronger airport operations rules due to much more fatalities in history. The chain of events that led to this incident is : - Barcelona ATC splitted in three : North tower, south tower, ground. - Configuration shifting : the airport was about to swich from night operation to day operation => communication problem monotoring remaining aircraft scheduled to land on rwy 02 before its closure. - AAR A340 unusual schedule : usually departing on late afternoon while 07LR/25LR are in use, this A340 made an overnight stop and were shceduled to depart on early morning, at the precise moment where the configuration switch was about to occur. - AAR A340 was initially assigned to take off on rwy 07L, but while taxiing, the runway configuration changed and the aircraft was reassigned to rwy 25R (you can't get there without crossing rwy 02) ATC failed to double check where the approching UTAir (com failure between ground/tower) the moment the AAR A340 were reassinged to rwy 25R, that would induce (at least one) rwy 02 crossing. First failure here, from ATC. - At Barcelona Airport at that time, most taxiways crossing rwy 02, including the twy M involved in this incident can be used without observing the holding points protecting the runway, assuming you have clearance to cross them, which the AAR pilots did have. Second failure here from Aviation Authorities of Spain or Barcelona Airport Authorities, I don't know, to strenghen traffic rules, as this kind of incident was NOT the first of the type at THAT airport. - Aerolineas Argentinas pilots assuming runway 02 usually not used in daylight which is TRUE. They didn't stop to observe traffic before crossing the runway, three times ! Third failure from the pilots which are operating under unusual circumstances, which should tighten their ability to switch to more strict procedure following. But it's hard to blame them directly for that. - But you have stop bars on taxiways, which tell a taxiing aircraft to stop when illuminated. Those were working and illuminated when the A340 were about to cross rwy 02 for the third time. What happenned ? They queried the ground and the stop bars were promptly extinguished ! Fourth failure, due to shifting configurations, poor communications, ground not aware of landing UTAir 767, assuming rwy 02 is closed... Such chain of events and failures is highly unlikely, but does happen. This would have never happened if only we were one half hour ahead or after schedule. Flying is safe because you don't rely only on one angel, like ATC, but aswell on safety procedures and rules, safety systems and equipements, and sometimes you must slam a fist on the table to get those new procedures printed regardless how that would cost. The separation between the A340 and the B767 was 1.7nm when the UTAir initiated the going around, and Barcelona Airport Authorities claim that separation were sufficient to clear the runway (not taking account of the fact that who knows what could happen to either planes once they're both on the ground - separations are not meant for normal procedure, they are meant for normal operations AND emergency situations - UTAir Pilots are the smartest here : runway obstruction at 200ft AGL/decision height => go around, don't play with the lives of hundreds of people) Again, no problem with widebody cockpit visibility. KZhead viewers are usually not aware of flight and traffic rules, don't scare them with invalid reasons.

    @RellyOhBoy@RellyOhBoy8 жыл бұрын

      @mistertagnan@mistertagnan8 жыл бұрын
    • Barcelona Airport has "traffic lights". Those are called "stop bars" which, when illuminated, tell the pilots to stop before crossing a runway. Those were installed on the taxiway involved (M), and illuminated, but the ground control were not aware the runway (02) was still in use at the moment of the events and switched the bars off : - that runway is closed during daylight opearation which were about to take place (configuration switch) - common procedures at Barcelona Airports are not as strict as in the US when it comes to that specific runway : you usually don't need to observe traffic when you're cleared to cross that runway. A bad habit at that airport, but that's how it was at that time. The crossing plane did had clearance to cross the runway, but they noticed the landing plane just too late. - Aerolineas Argentinas pilots are not used to early morning operations on that airport : usually they cross that runway in late afternoon when it is closed.

And the pilot repeated the command, which meant he had clearly heard and accepted it. But the pilot ignored the command and crossed the runway anyway.

  • Wow, this is a very close call, well done for the pilot landing for taking quick decisive action. Hard to comment on who's at fault though. Naturally it's the ATC's responsibility to warn the pilot on the departing plane to hold position while the aircraft arriving lands. But it could also be that the ATC did in fact communicate this message but the pilot misunderstood it or made a wrong decision to continue onto the runway. Either way, whoever is at fault, he/she made a big cock up!

  • This video desperately needs some clarification in the description. It is known for round two years now, that this incident wasn't as close as it looks like through the eye of the camera. It is most likely that the plane could have landed safely because of the distance (a radar image as picture in picte would clarify this). However. Safety procedures in the airline industry are much stronger than on roads or seas. And they don't take any chances (rush over a red light) and that is good. Every driver should remember that: never take chances, always assume the worst. Only that way accidents can prevented. And this is a perfect example how it's done.

  • Every moron on here saying that the pilot on the ground should've been able to see the plane coming in for a landing need to use some common sense. There are no windows on the top of the cockpits. It is highly unlikely they could see that plane coming in that close and that high. The likely cause was the ground controller since the plane was clearly stopped waiting then went ahead. Which makes it seem he got permission to cross right then.

    @bobalobalie@bobalobalie8 жыл бұрын
    • +BewareTheIdes Hey, have you ever realized that when you get close to a window, it allows you to see more angles? Common sense buddy. Use it, and you also need to realize that ATC probably cleared the plane for landing, so the A340 was crossing when it shouldn't.

      @spiritspride46@spiritspride468 жыл бұрын
    • Most likely an ATC mistake. Looking out the cockpit window in a reverse upward oblique direction is more difficult than you think. It isn't like crossing a 40mph boulevard...that jet landing was doing 200mph. When the landing jet was within the periphery vision of the pilots they probably couldn't see it because it was so far away. By the time they saw it they were already in the middle of the runway and you're already moving a 175 ton aircraft across a landing strip that's maybe 300 ft wide. either the ATC screwed up or the pilots in the taxiing airplane were lost (it happens) or misunderstood the ATC's instructions.

      8 жыл бұрын
    • A plane on the lavender early morning sky is pitch black, with bright spots on the side facing the sun, blinking strobes and very very bright landing lights when you're in the runway axe. Contrasts you can't miss with trained eyes such as pilot's eyes. Reverse upward oblique looking direction. A pilot does it dozens of times during a flight. If you believe a pilot can't look back, good. But just in case you missed it, the A340 copilot did see the landing 767, but too late, not because he had problems to notice it, but because he assumed "there is no plane landing or taking off on that runway", and did the check too late. ATC is at fault (poor communication ground/tower north/south) but Barcelona Airport Authorities is to blame aswell : pilots were not required to observe traffic when cleared to cross rwy 02...

      @StephenKarl_Integral@StephenKarl_Integral8 жыл бұрын
    • Oh and by the way : - The taxiing plane was not lost; it was taxiing to one runway (07L) then reassigned to another runway (25R) and the pilots were well aware they would cross the runway involved (02) three times. They were cleared to cross that runway, but the four main safety protection failed, all of them : ATC incomming traffic check, strong traffic rules, pilots observing, and runway crossing stop bars. Unbelievable but that happens. - The landing 767 hasn't crossed the runway thresshold when the crossing A340 pilots noticed it. Due to the distance to the camera, the A340 accelerated the crossing well before you hear the increase in thrust. Before that acceleration the A340 copilot had looked outside the window, but that doesn't help because they didn't stop at the hold short point before the runway. That's the few seconds that made the difference, but the 767 and the A340 were not "just a few seconds before impact" when pilots of both planes noticed eachover. - The 767 pilots just followed safety procedures : you have what is called a decision height (200ft above the ground) where you check your approach is stabilized (not sideways/too high/too steep descent/etc), that you have no warning that could put the landing procedure in jeopardy, that there is nothing obstructing the runway, and that ATC didn't instruct you to go around (I may miss some other conditions) The runway incursion occured at that moment and the UTAir pilots did what they should have done : going around. They were not in the middle of the runway above the A340, they had roughly at least 30 seconds to get out (which are enough once the going around was initiated, even with one engine failure) - A 767 speed on final is between 135 and 149 mph, depending on the loading and remaining fuel.

    • and plus, he cant stop the plane, what if there is another one behind? what if they get stuck in between runways and block everything. Good call by the 767 pilot, i hope he got promoted because i doubt that they were warned for the A340 on the runway, plus lets not forget that the pilots from the 767 couldnt see the a340 as well

  • Question . What If this happened during the night ? Does the TCAS warns the pilots in these type of situations or was it just because there were perfect flying conditions and the pilot was able to spot the airplane on the ground ?

    @13ThePunkz@13ThePunkz5 жыл бұрын
    • TCAS only warns when on a direct collision course - same altitude and if it calculates they will pass very close or hit. so it wouldnt have triggered in this situation. its designed to prevent midair collisions i dont know if there are systems on planes to warn about ground collisions but im sure in the tower ATC gets warned.

      @ChannelFiveNews@ChannelFiveNews3 жыл бұрын
    • @@ChannelFiveNews I understand, but the pilots have to be vigilant. They can't just rely on others. They knew they were crossing the runway. They should still check. All they had to do is look to the right to see if it was clear. It would've taken them a sec to do that.

      @moto__shark@moto__shark3 жыл бұрын
    • @@moto__shark Im actually studying to become a pilot of an italian flight company and I dont really know if there works like that but it should since ICAO takes most of the countries. Techically in the procedure to cross the runway the pilots ask to the ATC via radio a clear check and it ends with the permission or not to cross. I clearly understand what here the problem was, this airport is pretty famous for being one of the most used and busy airports of europe and the ATC personnel has only 1 minute of action per plane mostly and sometimes something can be forgot like that. Possible error but very dangerous.
