Wayne Owen is a retired New York sanitation worker who spent 20 years serving Manhattan and Staten Island, where he was born and raised.
This week Theo is joined by New York City garbage man Wayne Owen to learn all about the world of trash. They chat about how he got started in sanitation, what it’s like on the route, people’s biggest pet peeves with garbage men, the worst fights he’s gotten in, what it was like on 9/11, things he’s learned about people from their garbage, and who’s hiding bodies in the dump…

    • I don't get that appreciation shit... No one literally no one except for rare exceptions like police or medical personnel when they save your life do they ever get thanked. This dude is an asshole, like too many people nowadays... He gets it rough from people so he gets an attitude and takes it out on others... and the cycle perpetuates.. Like he doesn't seem to think there's a problem with collecting garbage at 6am, among other things... he has zero self awareness. I mean shit we all want praise but what he does just isn't any more important than any other job in the grand scheme so why does he deserve it, when the rest of us don't.

If the new year comes around and I stop paying, guess what happens? Go ahead and take a wild guess. That's right, they stop picking up my trash. It's almost like he is being paid to pick up my trash, and he's not just doing it out of the kindness of his heart. I never said his job isn't worthy of respect. I'm simply arguing that he's not "Sacraficing his body to dispose of all of your shit so you don't have to". If you still don't understand, then I'm gonna guess that you're just a kid whose daddy is a garbage man.

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God." - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 KJV The Holy Bible says that you are a sinner, and without Jesus Christ, you will die in your sins and spend eternity burning in Hell. There is no sin that can enter Heaven. You must have your sins washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ; he shed his blood for you and died on the cross of Calvary. 3 days later he rose from the dead, proving that he is God. Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven - you must turn to him, trust him, believe on him and him alone for the salvation of your soul. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." - Romans 3:23-28 KJV

  • Love that you make a point to interview “normal people” because you know everyone has a story to tell and plays a part in this world. So wholesome and relatable.

  • This is awesome. I work in campgrounds cleaning garbage and outhouses. It's nice to hear someone else's positive perspective and proud to talk about it publicly. I know the feeling when someone asks you "So what do you do for a living?". NYC Garbage Man articulates it well. Be proud of what you do, it helps your community.
