Is it too late for the US to contain China? | The Bottom Line

2023 ж. 1 Ақп.

Is it futile to resist China’s superpower status? Is it time for the United States to live with it?
Depending on the answer, the world could be heading towards more stability - or chaos.
Kishore Mahbubani was a Singaporean diplomat for more than 30 years and served as president of the United Nations Security Council. He tells host Steve Clemons that the US should get accustomed to a multipolar world it can no longer dominate.
Mahbubani argues that the "Asian century" has already begun and that Washington should not allow issues such as Taiwan to ruin their relations.

    • The USA is being forced to control itself because China is selling off its treasury holdings in US dollars and not buying any more. Other countries are now also doing the same after the US weaponised the Trading Dollar and the Swift system. Now the US is buying its own debt which it cannot sustain without global impact.

  • BRICS wants to build a new currency. It is also worth noting that gold has historically been used as a store of value and a means of exchange, and some countries still hold significant amounts of gold in their reserves. However, it is unclear how a new currency backed by gold would function in the current global financial system and whether it would gain widespread acceptance. Ultimately, any decision to create a new currency would be subiect to numerous economic, political, and logistical considerations.

    @Riggsnic_co@Riggsnic_co9 ай бұрын
    • It's interesting to learn more about the discussions and proposals around BRICS nations and their potential use of gold. There are several reasons why people may choose to buy gold, including its historical use as a store of value and means of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Additionally, gold can offer diversification benefits to investment portfolios, as it tends to have a low correlation with other asset classes like stocks and bonds. However, it's important to note that investing in gold carries risks and may not be suitable for evervone. and investors should carefully consider their investment objectives, risk tolerance, and financial situation before making any decisions.

  • It was possible to contain the Soviet Union because they contained themselves. They did not let foreigners in. They did not come out to the world to interact and trade. If they came out, they themselves said that the ultimate purpose was to change your country into communist and thus nobody trusted them. China is now the number one trading partner for 140 countries in the world. That trade benefits both sides. China now invests heavily in many countries in the world and that benefits the countries receiving the investments. China does not have a globalized ideology and does not try to tell other countries how to run their own affairs, making China a more attractive partner than the US. Why should any country cut their ties with China to please the US? Is the US offering to compensate those countries for their losses if they were to do so? The idea of "containing China" is a hallucination.

In the short 30 years since the end of the Cold War, it has launched 251 times, far exceeding the number of more than 190 years before the end of the Cold War. The United States launched at least 251 military interventions between 1991 and 2022. This is according to a report by the Congressional Research Service, a U.S. government institution that compiles information on behalf of Congress. The report documented another 218 U.S. military interventions between 1798 and 1990. That makes for a total of 469 U.S. military interventions since 1798 that have been acknowledged by the Congress. There are only three countries in the world America hasn't invaded or have never seen a U.S. military presence: Andorra, Bhutan, and Liechtenstein. Consider this, everywhere the US government goes with its terrorist military, death, assassination of leaders, hunger, war, destabilization, mayhem, murder and sanctions follow in the name of US Imperialist Ideology. You sound like a victim of US Government/US midea propaganda against China. It's not too late to start doing your own independent research, including talking with international students from China, or travel to China in person and see how the majority of its citizens are so happy with their government. What the United States is thinking now is not to use all its advantages to improve the level of science and technology of the United States, but to adopt measures of containment and containment to slow down the speed of China's rise. People will cite the narrative of Chinese exploitation of Africa but the West aren't doing better either, plus, any dealings by Africa with any one who's not the West is always termed as exploitation. • Militarily, it's still 800 US bases overseas versus China's 1 base in Djibouti. US patrols warships through the Taiwan Strait and will fight China over Taiwan, versus China only occasionally appearing off the coast of Alaska. So, the problem is that America can still show off its asymmetrical power if it wants. And unfortunately, the NATO engagement with Russia is creating a steady blueprint for war between nuclear powers, including a Sino-US war. But in the end, like Mahbubani says, is Europe's goal to have an angry Russia and destabilized continent for the next century? Clearly, Asia doesn't want to be war-torn just to prop up US hegemony for another 80 years. But I do wonder when I see Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, India, Australia all leaning into an anti-China stance with the US, including upping military games and hosting troops, if too many are simply leaning into the US bipolar framework and helping make war inevitable.

    • Wolf warrior diplomacy did not do China any favours, and in that time they lost ground in international partnerships even with Trump wasting four years. China's loose alliance with Russia, and Russia's alliance with Iran and North Korea, paints China in a bad light in terms of international tension with Western nations and Western allies. An angry Russia is a substantial burden to Europe and NATO, but an isolated Russia is potentially a very useful junior partner for the CCP's strategic vision. The US-Taiwan issue can be interpreted entirely in terms of TSMC and the silicon shield. Without TSMC, Taiwan would have gone the same route as Hong Kong. TSMC is of strategic importance to both USA and China, and critically important to the rest of the world, too. China blockade of Taiwan in 5 years seems likely, and worrying. China appears to have very few happy neighbours, but ASEAN countries are right to look for peaceful trade relationships with the most powerful economy in the region. Neither US nor Chinese dominance is likely, so the best we can all hope for is an uneasy balance of power which might become a stable stalemate.
