Here are the examples: It had been raining from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. yesterday I had been doing my home work from last Friday to Sunday. By yesterday, it had been raining almost every day for a week. By 2020, he had been in Paris for five years.

  • Thank you Emma! it isn't easy to grasp the difference between these two tenses but as usual you managed to convey it. As I understood we use the past continuos for a progressive action in a specific moment while we use the past perfect continuos to focus on the continuity of an action that started in a not specified time. I suppose it's the same difference we find between present continuos and present perfect continuos. Thnak you again.

    • Emma explains grammar really well! I know not a few English teachers who are native speakers yet always have a problem with these tenses. But here in this video what Emma tried to explain using the following two example sentences really confuses me: she said the cooking was incomplete and the food wasn't ready in the sentence "Julia had been cooking for hours when the guests arrived," while she said the hard work was done in the sentence "she had been working very hard and the presentation was finally done." So does the past perfect continuous show an ongoing action was complete or not before the second action took place? Hopefully someone can help me with this.

We had been living there for months before we finally met the neighbors. 5. Jag was listening to the radio when someone knocked on the door. 6. It had been raining so the ground was wet. There is one question, Emma. No.6 could be Past Continuous? I just thought it also makes sense. I look forward to your next lesson!

  • 1) We had been waiting for the bus for hours when it finally arrived. (Past perfect continuous because a period of time was specified for the continuing action in the past) 2) Last Monday, at 8 am I ate my breakfast. (Past continuous because that action was in progress at a an accurate moment in the past) 3) They were walking home when suddenly it started to rain. ( here 2 actions took place in the same time and the first action is in progress. then we need the past continuous) 4) We had been living there for months before we finally met the neighbours. ( a continuous action in the past where we specified a period of time. then the past perfect continuous might be correct) 5) Jag was listening to the radio when someone knocked on the door. (the first action is in progress and both two actions took place in the same time) 6) It had been raining so the ground was wet. (because the ground was wet is the consequence of a continuous action in the past) Thanks for helping.

  • When the topic is about GRAMMAR, guess who's the best teacher?....without a doubt you got it!!😉 Hi Emma, how's it going? My homework!! 1.- We had been waiting for the bus for hours when it finally arrived. 2.- Last Monday, at 8 am I was eating my breakfast. 3.- They were waking up home when suddenly it started to rain. 4.- We had been living there for months before we finally met the neighbors. 5.- Jag was listening to the radio when someone knoked on the door. 6.- It had been raining so the ground was wet. I was eating breakfast when Emma's notification suddenly appeared on my phone. I had been eating breakfast for half an hour when Emma's notification appeared on my phone. I was studying English grammar with Emma when my family arrived. Thank you so very much Emma, you are the best.😉 P.s for a momment I thought you made a mistake on the word "NEIGHBOURS", until I looked it at the dictionary. In Ametica we use "NEIGHBOR" with out the "u" I'm going to watch this video several times until I have nail it.
