Peter Boghossian - Interview on Woke Ideology

2024 ж. 13 Мам.

Peter Boghossian and I discuss the political religion of Wokeness, where it came from, how it operates and more.
This is part of an interview I did back in 2019 for my film When in Doubt. I was primarily interviewing him about his book How to Have Impossible Conversations and then I spent part of our interview discussing Woke ideology. So that's what this video is. My filmmaking partner and friend, Matt, who is a Portland progressive, occasionally asks questions, too. So you'll hear his voice in there, as well.
If you appreciate my work, please consider supporting me on Locals, as that allows me to keep making more content. Plus, you'll get exclusive content on Locals page like long form interviews, tips on how to deal with Woke ideology and more.

  • In the 1980s I was an engineering major at Arizona State University. I became a dorm Resident Assistant and was required to take a course at the College of Education. I'll never forget being totally confused and intellectually lost because unlike my math, physics, and engineering courses, NOTHING was proved from first principles. Squishy, vague all-encompassing statements were made and accepted as fact and we were given endless exercises asking us to show how situations could be handled. I never had the faintest idea what any of it was about, or why some things were supposedly toxic and others good. At the conclusion I remember thinking "the College of Education at ASU is totally fake. You could grab anyone off the street, give them 20 minutes to come up with a course in managing social interactions, and the quality and validity would be the same or better. To this day all I remember about the class is being bewildered every moment of the semester. I can't remember a single principle, idea, theory, nothing. There really was nothing there.

  • Thank you for having this interview and making it available. Too many noble causes have historically been hijacked by ideological opportunists who wind up distorting a virtuous objective into a force for the suppression of objective thinking. I'm 71 years old and very grateful to still be learning. I sometimes ask myself how we have gone from the very basic premise of "class struggles" between the oligarchy and the proletariat with a utopian objective to integrate the marginalized into a more egalitarian society to what we are witnessing today of group identity politics, that seeks to segregate and to implement a doctrine of division between equals to sustain another type of society, that in the end is more tyrannical than the one it seeks to replace.

It means a leading out. To me education is a leading out of what is already there in the pupil's soul. To Miss Mackay it is a putting in of something that is not there, and that is not what I call education, I call it intrusion, from the Latin root prefix in meaning in and the stem trudo, I thrust.”

  • The problem with "identity" and how it is used in relation to biology and pronouns, is that most of these things are personality traits. If viewed through that lense, which it should, everything would fall into place. A man can have feminine traits, a woman can have masculine traits, and there's a multitude of dimensions and variations of this within the personality spectrum, but it's no need to change pronouns due to it. It's only traits.

  • During my Masters at the University of Amsterdam we had a course on Business Ethics where there was an assignment to choose a topic an discuss this using the common ethical streams. My counterpart chose BLM and I said that this movement contains a lot of elements of identity politics which makes them a bit neo-marxistic. My counterpart was the one who should react to my words.. well.. the lecturer lectured me for 20mins about hoe I need to feel guilty for every mistake human beings have ever made hahaha and this is a university lecturer.. I said, sir, with all respects, I will never buy this crap. In another discussion two students discusses the gender pay gap. Well after some talk we got the chance to intervene as a group.. I asked the lecturer well sir, what do you mean by equality? He said stuff that basically tend towards equality of outcome. I said, equality of opportunity is key for human success and we have made huge steps there, but equality of outcome is impossible horseshit. We have biology .. Average grade at the end was 7.9 and I got a flat 6. Hahahaha I got punished for my opinion. I let it go and now I regret that. Academia nowadays is a joke. Even in a business adminitration studies woke is the standard.

    • @@Adnann1234 I never went to school (thank God!) but a friend of mine did, and she had to write a paper in middle school (I think she was in 7th grade) about how teens can minimize their risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases. She was one of only two kids in the class who were Christian and didn't believe in sex before marriage, but the teacher didn't know they were Christians. One of them wrote a beautifully worded essay about why she's choosing to stay celibate, and she didn't disparage the teens who don't, she just described why this is her choice, and how it will also work to protect her from STDs. My friend wrote what she knew the teacher believed, NOT what she believed, and she titled her essay "Sexually Transmitted Disease: Anyone Can Get It". She got an A, and the other girl got a C-. But my friend regretted not standing up for what she believed ; and she kept her paper -- and asked the other girl if she could have a copy of hers -- to remind herself never again to submit to Woke ideology just for a grade. So I've read both papers, and the other girl's paper really is better, not only in terms of grammar, but in style and skill. So the teacher obviously gave her a bad grade because the teacher only wanted kids to parrot what SHE thought.

The qualitative way of conducting science is really toxic and just is a misrepresentation of reality. I actually do not regret getting an academic degree (MSc). It helped me lifting up my career significantly. In the Netherlands we experience the same issues as in the other countries in the so called west. We are dragging behind and other parts of the world are catching up because of this woke crap. I really am bothered with this. I have plans to become a dad, but how this is going to end up is no safe space for one's kids. A real safe pace that is based on scientific reality, not the safe space these damn hippies talk about.

I had to do that take a step forward if you... whatever, exercise. I was told there is no need to consider budget when creating social programs. My dean, Dr. Webster, told me he wasn't sure I was cut out for it bc of my religious faith. My classmates called our class "Webster's minions" and wanted to wear identical shirts all the time. I haven't done that or been asked to since Jr. High. I facetiously called a couple of our classes "indoctrination class." It was all real. Now I have 2 masters degrees and can't believe it was all real and took root. I thought it was just my class and it was too stupid to be taken seriously. It's all too real and it was intentional.

  • I love the kudzu comparison. In the US that plague is self-inflicted. It was first introduced to the US by the Soil Erosion Service and Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s for the purpose of controlling soil erosion in the American Southeast. That erosion problem didn't come from dumb farmers... those farmers were following practices put forth by the then-experts and government reinforcement of those ideas which led to the 'dust bowl'. Getting government to fix a problem created by government... what could go wrong? With the woke I see a weakness of Liberalism. Liberalism holds dear the idea of diversity of thought. In pursuit of that diversity it tolerates illiberal ideas. Those with illiberal ideas act in illiberal ways but the Liberal doesn't call it out or push back for fear of breaking with diversity of thought. And in doing so Liberalism points the shotgun at its own throat and pulls the trigger. All the years that this stuff rolled around in the University and where was the push back? Why does it always take a disaster to get people motivated?

So untenured profs under the threat of "publish or perish," have learned to compliment their grooming "mentors" (often, even in dissertations)! In other words, a system that started quietly has proliferated and mushroomed into what today is Wokeversities... not unlike the priesthood in the Catholic Church. As a philosopher, however, it be great to hear Boghossian take on Peikoff's "The Cause of Hitler's Germany.," if only because the Aryan-Semitic Race Theory (ASRT) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) both come from bored, name seeking German schools and Peikoff unpacks the moral disorientation of Weimar Germany which is reminiscent of today's moral disorientation. It'd be also great to hear Beghossian's opinion about personal conduct with Tunisian boys.
