  • “Sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind.” This is such a powerful line. There is a reason that so many people with mental illnesses resort to drugs/alcohol/reckless behaviors; especially when they aren’t properly medicated. It’s too hard to escape your thoughts and you become so desperate you’ll resort to almost anything for a moment of relief. This song hits me every time I hear it.

    • I always thought of the line differently. For me, I have to “kill” my thoughts in a sense. Not with alcohol/drugs/reckless behavior, because those only numb your mind. No, you have to KILL your mind. Destroy those thoughts before they form. “Tie NOOSE around your mind, loose enough to breath fine and tie it to a tree tell it YOU BELONG TO ME. “ He’s saying, take control. You aren’t your dark thoughts, you aren’t your depression. You’re the owner of the house that is your brain, and if saving it means you have to burn that house down, so be it. “This ain’t a noose, this is a LEASH and I have news for you YOU MUST OBEY ME”. Furthering the idea that you have to tell yourself you’re bigger than whatever you’re facing. So, to sum it up, I think killing your mind is different than numbing it. Killing it is taking control of your depressive thoughts and redirecting them (hence the “leash” metaphor).

      @summerg8863@summerg88632 жыл бұрын
    • @@summerg8863 I can see that too. And that’s probably how Tyler meant it, but I think it can encompass many methods. To be fair, if you suffer from depression, taking control of your mind is just as temporary as the other mind numbing method. Positivity can go a long way, don’t get me wrong, but most people can’t escape depression by just trying to take control of their thoughts. I’ve never been very good at it and proper medication is pretty much the only thing that helps me. I’m happy for those who can overcome it and applaud them for it though.

    • Same here. I have heard two reactors mention the count-in but I still can’t hear it. • One of my favorite T.O.P. songs, because I suffered with nearly daily migraines for most of my life, and it wasn't until recently that they subsided. This song was something I really related to, especially because my battle with suicidal thoughts and deep depression was amplified greatly by the migraines. They kept me alone in a dark room most days, barely able to attend school or spend time with friends or family without intense pain each day. Secluded and miserable.

  • I did not expect you to know so many Biblical references. Revelation is not something that would have crossed a lot of people's minds. One of the reasons I love your reactions and takes so much. You really know your stuff in more than just the music. You come up with meanings that even some of the artists themselves may not have thought of, and it really adds a new perspective. I always took this song a different direction with my own interpretation, but now I have a fresh lens to listen to the song. I think that is my favorite thing about music. There are just so many ways to take a single three-minute song. No other artistic media has that quality.

Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.", and then he ends with a mention of symbolism of a lion in Revelation, not saying that it represents the Devil.

  • It's ironic how "Migrane" is one of my favorite TOP songs, yet I've never carried the burden of having suicidal thoughts ever. However just like Knox points out all of the incredible poetry Tyler puts into this song, I fell in love with this song for its dynamics in music and lyrics. Though I personally have never struggled with these kinds of thoughts, Tyler's performance with this song moved me to feel and empathize with his pain and struggle and helped me better understand my friends who do struggle in this. For me the line "Shadows will scream that you are alone" really got to me. Though my struggle was not suicidal thoughts, I still have laid awake in the middle of the dark of night and felt the crushing weight of loneliness on my soul. Just by Tyler making this song and acknowledging the shadows, he brought the light of hope that I am not alone in that feeling, that we all are never alone in our burdens and struggles.

I can not only relate to it in the metaphorical way but also in the literal way, ya know? “sometimes death seems better than migraine in my head” is not only relatable because I understand having so much going on in my head mentally and just in general you just feel like you’re at a loss, but it’s also relatable because I have literally been in the positions with migraines so bad I have thought it would be better for me to hurt myself than continue with the pain. anyway lmfaoo, the other day my therapist told me I talk very poetically and I swear it’s cause I’ve been watching your videos and listening to your music a lot lately. Which also sets up the “ruthless examiner” as either being God, Tyler’s own self-examination, or a mix (I.e. the way Tyler might imagine God judging him).

  • “The game is not played alone” Sounds like this could be taken a few ways. One is that you’ve gotta have people around you to support you. Two could be that there’s a lot of other people out there struggling the same way, or to a similar extent. And three could be that god’s always with you if you believe in one. I enjoy that bit of writing a lot because of how specific and how broad it is. It’s specific in that people really understand that feeling of the migraine if they’ve felt it before, and also that it can be applicable to many different versions of that feeling.

  • 10:30 I love how he got the concept of the migraine Tyler was going for. I had a video saved in my iTunes a while back where he explains the background/story of the songs on the Vessel album, and migraine was the concept that stuck out the most to me. He talks about how the migraine is a signal that tells you something else is wrong, not the headache itself, and that in fact up to the point he had recorded this video, he had only ever had 1 migraine and it was an awful experience. I hope I can find this video again because he words it way better

  • One thing I didn't see you talk about, it's about the positive message of the song, about hope... In my opinion, the instrumentals are upbeat not just for contrast, he talk about life having a "hopeful undertone", just like this music. And he says that he "made this far", as a way to say he is not down yet and didn't gave up.

  • 1:39 something i love about tyler’s writing is that he explains things a lot of the time instead of telling it straight up. an example that i’ve heard makes people feel weird but i actually like is in “before you start your day” the first lyric is “open the slits in your face // and start your day” it’s not just “open your eyes” i see this a lot more in his older music thinking about it. but i love it!!!

  • I always saw "..Sunday is my suicide day.." representing the dying to the flesh concept in Christianity, kinda tying in the the rest of the theme which is that battle against internal darkness. He goes throughout the week having his fun within the darkness to some extent, then going to church on Sunday needing to repent and kill off that part of himself. Which is also something that you can draw from the concept described in Blasphemy from No Phun intended.

  • "a difficult beast feasting on burnt down trees" Also, about Pandora: Pandora was a gift from the Gods to Men, she was the first woman, endowed with a gift from every single Olympian god. Zeus was angry at Prometheus for stealing the fire of the gods, and so, he instructed Pandora to use one of her gifts, a jar full of diseases and evils, as soon as Pandora was married to Epimetheus, she tilted her jar and thus, the Golden Age of Humanity was no more.
