  • Just look at that Elland Road pitch. Proper footballers in them days. :-) Seriously, though, the Premier League generation do not realise how great the Liverpool teams of the 80s were. McMahon and Molby were my favourite midfield combo. Molby's right foot has no equal in world football. Watch him and his stats. Rush the rapier and Beardsley (who was the making of Lineker's international career) are a perfect attacking combo. John Barnes was as skilled, balanced and visionary attacking midfielder, as any of the Brazilian legends (Pele aside!).

    • Sorry to disagree, there were a *few* half decent players on both sides and John Barnes probably the pick of them, but the overall quality of football in the early 90s was dogshit compared to what today's Man City, Liverpool (or any of the top 6 really) can do. No team had this much buying power back then. Also, the improved training methods, diet-plans, stat-recording and computer-assisted match analyses, harsher refereeing on dangerous tackles... gives the 21st century teams a huge advantage over teams from the early 90's.

  • Brings back happy memories. I was 18 years old and couldn't get a ticket (big games had just become all ticket) so tried to buy one outside for a few hours with no luck whatsoever, so decided to try and sneak in through a turnstile in the Lowfields. One of my mates went through in front of me and tried to shield me as best he could from the old boy in the booth, while I tried to slither underneath the bottom rung of the turnstile. It went well until I got stuck half way underneath. My mate had had to go through and I was just wedged, half in half out. I thought well that's me fucked and resigned myself to whatever was gonna happen and looked up at the screen and the old fella with glasses on had got up out of his chair and was just gazing down at me stuck in his turnstile. Next thing, this great big skinhead put his boot into my back/arse and gave me the biggest shove and said "you're through now lad" I couldn't believe it. Got up and me and my mates sprinted up the stairs and straight into the end pen. Even though we got beat, I'd love to buy that man a beer. What a match. Thanks for uploading.

  • I remember this result. Liverpool had a thing back in the 90's of being involved in high scoring games, a combination of having a formidable attack and a weak defence dealing with high balls meant that so long as they scored more than they conceded it was ok....but as mentioned before the cracks were clear for all to see. An ageing team, defence that was questionable under the high ball and frequent management changes. Its taken 30 years to ride the carousel to get back to a side that will challenge for the league title. If history teaches us anything its that teams like arsenal, man utd and co. cant expect a quick fix anytime soon. This was a great game and Leeds were worthy league champions. YNWA.

    • It isnt as simple as that. Liverpool lost Mark Lawrenson in 1988, to a freak injury he picked up in 1987, Lawrenson was if anything a better defender, and the decision not to address that loss would have far reaching consequences. Couple this with the fact that Hansen was having persistant injury issues(his knees), and the fact that he was approaching the end of his career, and by 1991, they were without two of the finest central defenders the club had ever had.
