They were originally kidnapped non-muslim boys who were trained and watched over by eunuchs (maybe that's where the idea came from), forbidden to marry while serving and also forbidden to have facial hair (perhaps the other reason for assuming they were castrated). They were also forcibly circumcised.

    • Where did you get that information? They weren't kidnapped or anything, their families were asked then they would be taken away, placed in a turkish family and they would be jannisaries if they are strong.If they are smart, they would be suitable for other kinds of jobs, like being a sadrazam. Though I do not know anything about them being eunuch or being circumcised, though I know for a fact that it is a tradition to be circumcised in both the ottomans and turkey. They are not allowed to marry, so they had the right to actually rape women after they capture cities (Istanbul for example).
