Tbh. The first crusade they were terribly outnumbered and almost starved to death on the field
What makes this even funnier is a crusade by the Holy Roman Emperor actually did happen around this time period (A few decades earlier). There was just one problem however.....That Holy Roman Emperor had been excommunicated by the Pope a few months before. He said "Fuck that, I'm still crusading" and went to the holy land anyway. The Ayyubid dynasty during that time was in a civil war, so the brother that controlled Syria and the Holy Land now had this large Crusading army to deal with. They decided to negotiate, and Jerusalem and the coastal strip on the road to the city was given over. The city would fall to an attack by marauding Khwarizmi Mercenaries about 15 years later, but its still an interesting, and often overlooked success in the Crusades.
