When A tornado is in the vicinity, normal people tend to seek shelter. Others try to catch a glimpse of the rare spectacle. For some storm chasers the closer they get, the better. But why would anybody risk everything to witness something so formidable so close? Is it all just for social network boasting and media hype? Is it for science or for money? Is it rooted in pure fascination and curiosity, or just plain stupidity? Over the last couple decades, I’ve had numerous opportunities and incentives to dare up close photography of tornadoes. More than once, I was lucky to escape with my life. In this video we’re going to explore close intercepts with tornadoes, and the driving incentives to cross that line in the wind defining close and too close. These are my top 10 up close tornado encounters caught on camera.
Every few months I go through what I've labeled the "Tornado Phase," where, for some reason, I hyperfixate on all things tornado, and every time I go through this, I ALWAYS come to watch Hank's videos. I get very excited every time it's tornado season because I know he'll be uploading new content, and he never disappoints.

Pecos Hank is unlike any other storm chaser. He doesnt scream and shout at the sight of one, he stays calm ( I dont know how!! ) Thank you hank, for giving us such good content to enjoy!
Definitely the goat of storm videos!
No screaming here because Hank is a PRO !
Hank asked the question, A,B,C or D. D is my answer, all of the above.
Most chasers are talking to the stream/radio or getting clips to sell to news who don't care about audio. Hank is trying to get the shot for this channel and he likes clean audio. He also chases solo which helps because he isnt worried about a second person or having a second person worried about the pair.
@@travisnickeystorms He is the real life “ Extreme “.. Movie reference.
I like when Hank knows he gets too close and follows it with "my wife is going to kill me".
Thats because hes married to tornadoes.
😄 If it looks like it ain't moving in either direction. That means it's heading straight for you!. . . or away from you😆- But wise man say; if it doesn't look like it's moving, don't assume it's heading away from you, always assume that it's heading straight for YOU!🙂😨
If he survives the tornado, that is.

The fact that Pecos Hank has been up close to enough tornados to make a whole damn top 10 video of his own captures. One mad meteorologist!
Hi
He never saw twister
I know, right? I've been a storm spotter in Tornado Alley for going on 30 years, observed many tornado-warned storms, seen 100s of funnels... only see 6 tornadoes in my life... largest being an EF3.
Reed Timmer takes the cake.
@@BobbyEngels-Natsariym, not even close; Hank is leaps and bounds ahead of Reed in his ability to narrate like a human and also get the shot.
The shot of the tornado weaving in and out of the wind turbines is perhaps one of my favorite in this video. Tornadoes are simply awe-inspiring, commanding a respectful fear wherever they go. They can kill easily and it is a travesty when they do, but one cannot deny they are just so intriguing and eye-catching. How would you not want to stop and just stare at or film one? I am not sure if there is any other force or power on earth quite like that. Even other natural disasters like volcanic eruptions or something still feel like they belong on earth. Tornadoes are like some other-worldly thing that visits our planet from time to time to wreak havoc and remind us they are out there, yet no one storm is alike. If this is what we have on earth, just imagine what some of the other planets in the universe have to put up with weather-wise. I've been in tornado-warned storms before, but never had the opportunity to see one clearly with my own eyes. Is it weird that I want to someday?
Don't worry, I also want to some day
I must shamefully admit I stood under a spinning cloud during a storm hoping to see one form lol
I thought that too..and I live where there are no tornadoes (rural upstate NY). In 2020 we had an EF1 tornado...that's all it was..it came up the hill over my house and down the road. Maybe a mile or two. EF1 but it was fucking terrifying. It was a wall of grey moving up the hill directly for my little farm house. Shit was flying around outside, trees snapped and a few old pines completely uprooted. We ran around in the house looking out from window to window in complete disbelief😂 I'm laughing now but every storm we get now, my kids are scared and I admit I get freaked out. We get crazy wind as it is. But that day we'll never forget. First summer in our dream home.
Imagine if the wind turbines could actually capture some of that energy, the state would be set for the whole year😂
Since you are in the Northeast, I hope that means you have a basement.
Pecos Hank. #1 storm chaser in the US. No fuss. No screaming. No yelling. No yelling “Debris debris!”. No yelling “Look tornado!”. Like we can’t see it to. Just pertinent information delivered in an easy going affable manner with small bits of humour mixed in.
I love that you included the incentives for each tornado, really helps people who would never even DREAM of tempting fate like this understand the thought process and reasoning, and really get a view into the mind of people who take these kind of risks. Its like for that moment you can really FEEL like a stormchaser. Amazing footage as always! Edit: I had not finished watching the video when I made this comment but holy mother of Moses that final tornado so close like that is unlike anything I have ever seen... Hey Hank! Just wanted to express my admiration for your videos. I value not only the time and dedication you put into chasing storms, but also the research, editing, and all the elements that set your videos apart from the rest. A few weeks ago, I was caught in the grips of an intense panic attack that lasted for hours. Despite my efforts, I couldn't find a way to ease my anxiety and get some rest. Once in a lifetime to witness first hand nature at it's full life controlling power. Not enough thanks goes out to storm chasers and weather trackers.
I recently endured a tornado. I was lucky it was an EF2, but we rarely get tornadoes here and no one was prepared. I watch your videos a lot, so I was able to realize and get my family and extended family to safety. It was really crazy, especially since we were driving. I don't think I would've been able to do what I did in that scenario without you. Thank you for the 4 years and counting that I've been watching you, Hank
Back when I was like 12 or 13 (I'm 36 now) my parent's neighborhood got hit by a tornado in an area where tornadoes are not exactly common (30-40 minutes north of Charlotte, NC). Luckily it ended up only being like an F-1, but ho-LEE shit is it scary when you don't know that beforehand and you're watching the funnel cloud coming straight towards you! It passed directly over our house and it really did sound exactly like a freight train... I can't even begin to imagine how much louder a stronger tornado would've been! The craziest part was when we came out of the house, there was so much hail everywhere, it looked like it had snowed or something… That and all of the snakes that were everywhere! I guess the torrential downpour of rain had driven them all up from underground, but there were giant snakes absolutely everywhere. I've never heard anybody else mention this detail as part of their tornado experience so I don't know this was just unique to my situation, but either way it was gross!
@@KaileyB616Well that’s horrifying, my two lifelong phobias combined!
We had an EF1 (baby tornado, I know😂) in 2020. Its super windy on our mountain and I always reassured my kids..we don't get tornadoes here. Then it came. My house was built in 1780. And we'd just bought it. I kept saying, "This house has stood here for over 200 years. This storm will fuck off somewhere else!!" I was so angry, I wouldn't go in the bathroom and hide. I was terrified but refused to give up my home. it was absolutely terrifying..I can't imagine a stronger one. Omg. It ripped the roof halfway off the house up the road.😫

All this struggle to catch weather comes from a heart pumping with the love of Nature
the legend is finally back!
Hank, you always have the absolutely best footage. Your deep knowledge of supercells and understanding of lighting makes your tornado videos world class. Fangirling.
Am I trippin? Or does it look like two people dancing at 4:41? Almost a ballerina too.
Hey hank! Just wanted to say I love your videos and I appreciate not only the time and effort of chasing, but the research, editing, and all other aspects that make your videos unlike anyone else’s. A few weeks ago I was suffering from an extremely severe panic attack and I could not calm down, it was going on for hours and I kept trying to find a way to calm myself down so I could go to bed. It wasn’t until around 4 am when I put in one of your videos and it calmed me down enough to the point where I could sleep. I know you didn’t produce your videos with helping anxiety disorder in mind but they really are enthralling enough to help! Thanks again for all the content.
Hello Jack. I'm glad that pesky panic attack finally ended. Dr. Sam Harris has some interesting things to say about anxiety here on KZhead. Maybe give him a whirl. Take care amigo.
@@PecosHank muita verdade muita muita muita verdade
@@PecosHank I really appreciate how you look out for your viewers. You’re the best!
Sorry to hear the panic attack Jack.
I have MS and a peculiar manic disorder secondary to it. I don't have panic attacks, but I can understand. Substitute fear with anger, and maybe that can paint a picture of my difficulties? I can imagine getting that sweet shot and thinking, "Gotcha, you son of a b****!". It's pretty therapeutic.
Man, the sound of you seriously flooring it starting around 12:06 😬
Great work Hank! I am always impressed at your ability to maintain your composure and focus in the midst of the maelstrom. Keep up the good work and please continue to balance risk and safety to create these amazing videos that would not exist, if not for YOU.
Amazing footage as always! Your videos are second to none! Keep up the great work!
I love the Smell of rain I love the sound of thunder I love to feel the cold air I love to touch the wet soil That's why I'm here 💙
I mean the thing is tho you get none of that here except for the thunder thing, pretty sick though
I occasionally dream extremely vivid dreams with tornadoes 🌪. I’ve had about 5 or six and last night was one of those dreams. So bizarre. The fact that I’m in Canada and I’ve never seen one makes it all the more mysterious.
I have those dreams too. half the time I get lifted by the tornado. in those dreams it is often fun but also horrifying. to be flying up in a tornado without the real danger of death but it feeling all so real
I have dreams about them too! Fairly frequently, actually
I have been watching you for a while and you inspired me to be a storm chaser 😊😊😊😊😊
What I like about Pecos Hank is He's always calm never screaming during his chases and he doesn't sensationalize what he sees. There's another weather chaser out there that was trying to tell us In the Buffalo snowstorm, it was a seven foot snowfall yet the snow wasn't even covering cars.. No need to Bs when people can see stuff with their own eyes!
With everything you’ve taught and shared with us, I don’t recall you mentioning any associated smells giving you an early warning. The 2 tornadoes that affected me both had a weird earthy, “wormy”, and burnt plastic, charged odor in the air a couple of hours prior. Have you ever noticed an odd smell in the air prior to having one touch down near you? Just curious.✨
Great question! I'm curious too
Curiosity has me now.
i smell that smell everytime a strong thunderstorm is coming. i feel like it has something to do with the humidity
I think he has in a past video, but I might be wrong abt that
That's actually a great question. My family and I could always smell snow and thunderstorms so that is a legit question.
11:50 You can actually SEE the trees being obscured by the fog of the tornado. It is visibly moving, rapidly.
11:14 had me rolling, thanks for all the work you do Hank, stay safe out there.
Hecos Pank is the real people's champion. You can tell he's just a nice genuine dude. Been obsessed with tornadoes since I saw raw footage on VHS when I was a wee lad. 26 years later and I can safely say it's my greatest passion. To have tornado chaser ambassadors like Hank makes me happy to be part of such a great community. Love y'all!
i can tell I'm sleep deprived bc "hecos pank" made me laugh so unnecessarily hard i dropped my cake on the floor
Nice one Hank! Some of those tornadoes are absolutely glorious. Others, terrifying. Good job!
This is one of the most unique tornado chasing videos I've ever seen. You took outstanding footage and you show calm and thrill at the same time when you have close twister encounters. What's more, this video has the Paris, Texas movie vibes and atmosphere. Outstanding work! And the music is perfect in this!
Gotta love it when Mother Nature goes nuts for us without hurting anyone.
Wow! I just want to say- thank you for risking your life almost every day to capture footage of these strange phenomenons! Even though I’ve only been following your channel for 2 years, your channel made me want to study these freaks of nature as much as I could. Several years ago I would stay inside and hide under a blanket during a Thunderstorm, but now I sit next to the window, eagerly waiting for a flash of light outside as I explain to myself how lightning works. So thank you :) *i think I made this comment too long-*
Almost every day???? Still probably my 2nd or 1st favorite storm chaser he is so relaxing
That's awesome Sage. Thanks for taking the time to write.
Sometimes when I want to scare myself I watch one of Pecos Hank’s videos. Once I made the choice of watching on my 4K in the dark with headphones. He captures the horrific void of a tornado’s approach so beautifully. Stay safe everyone 🌪
Yep, always good stuff Pecos! Thank you for posting this fantastic footage.👍🏽👍🏽
This IS the best tornado channel on YT. Wow! Hey sir, your work is priceless. Not only do I appreciate you, I appreciate all the significant others of you chasers out there. That's real talk. Stay safe. 🤘
Grats on the 1 mil! Been loving your content for years, always a treat when you drop a new video! You're literally the David Attenbouough of Tornadoes, as you never fail to give a deep insight to what's happening, giving us spectacular videos of these monsters up close. Keep doing what you're doing, thanks for everything you do for us
You're the Bob Ross of tornado chasing, thank you for the beautiful videos and information!
»The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of The Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of The Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.« (Gospel of Matthew - Chapter 1)

That is the best footage I've ever seen, especially the last one. Thank you.
the best image you can get about tornadoes on the internet are there !!! thank to pecos hank
Pecos, thank you not only for this today, i had a bad day and it kicked my butt, but i saw your video come across my feed and never been more relaxed or brought back to my center. I lost my Dad last year, i binge watched your channel and it got me through a really tough time. Its not just the incredible footage you capture or the education you deliver in your videos about storms or atmospheric phenoma during a storm (Referring to the Sprites, what an amazing happening that i never knew existed until i seen it in your channel), but its your Candor and Wholesome Nature that draws me back to you over and over again. Thank You from the bottom of my heart for just being you my man. Many Blessings on your Journeys and Always Peace Love Happiness. #PecosDaMan
Sorry to hear your Dad passed Jewelz, but it means the world I was able to help someone in some small way. xox
I lost my dad last year as well. I'm sorry you're going through that. But you're right, Hank's videos are something else. 😊
Finally a new video from Hank!
Hank you videos and narrations are simply the best. Long time fan.
Hank, you are the real deal! All these other so-called storm chasers wind up being a scam ( pretending to be inside of a tornado, etc...) when really they are just caught in the downdraft. 🙄 Hank, I would give up everything to be able to chase tornadoes with you! Everything you post is completely authentic ✨️ ❤️ Much love, Pecos Hank!
The only two that I KNOW were inside the tornado were, Sean Casey and Reed Timmer. Good call though, many have yelled "I'm in the tornado " and been in the inflow or downdraft.
Congratulations on 1M! 😎😎😎
Always good to see a hank upload
The best storm chaser, hands down. Most are kids, jacked on Red Bull and convenience store snacks, screaming their heads off because they’re in over their heads.
Not just one of my favorite storm chasers, but one of my favorite KZheadrs. 🤘🏼
just got tornado warning 1 hr ago and I’m watching this lol
Let’s go! Another Pecos video!!!!
Hands down, you're videos are the absolute best I've ever watched. I try to chase tornadoes, but I have absolutely no reason to do so other than being an adrenaline junky. The one time I actually saw a tornado, I was picking my nephew up from school, and got told by the principal I had to come inside and take shelter. Pretty fun seeing as how I had my beagle puppy with me.
