In part 16 of the 9-week truck bed camping road trip, I've stopped at a stream that looked fishy from the road! It turned out to be INCREDIBLE! I still can't believe some of the fish I caught beside the bridge and some I've never seen before as I moved up the stream!
I started my 9 week road trip on July 31, 2022, and spent roughly 3 weeks in WY, ID and MT. Check out all the videos from this trip in the playlist linked below:

Excellent video!! What I've always enjoyed most about your videos is that they provide real world visuals for reading water. Seams, pockets, cushions around rocks, banks... Love it!! On this this one I especially like the close up shots of fish, too. For those out there still learning to identify the different species of trout these shots were spot on.
Glad they are helpful! Thanks for the good vibes!
Watched this one again. Just love this whole series. Happy new year.
Nice video as usual. Really gets me exited for next season which starts soon in Wisconsin (catch and release). See how the weather goes though! Happy New Year to you and your family.
love fishing creeks like this! nice video
Keep the videos coming. I look forward to seeing each one.
That Salmon is so cool! I had no idea there were land locked Salmon in those western streams. Another great video Drew.
Yes it was! I learned about them from the couple who stopped by camp last year and asked if they could drop a tent to hold my spot after I left. Every hole had tons!
Beautiful stream and forest, and let's not forget the fish. Thanks for sharing drew. 👍 tight lines.
It was just an incredible day all around!
And yet again an excellent video of a pretty stream and some great fish. Thanks for sharing.
Thank u!
New Year’s resolution: start saving money to make my way to the west to fly fish before next year. As you know,NC is really nice, but it’s home to me and I understand that it’s a world of difference. I’m learning though and you’re helping. Thanks for taking us along! Marty
"It's probably fine" :) probably a good idea you left even if just for the saw noise. Great vid Drew! always thanks for taking us along on your journeys, especially my favorite Idaho!
That was such a fun and crazy day. Those logging trucks can move lol!
Hey Drew, looks like a good time and thank God for plan "B".. Stay safe out there and I'll look for ya on the water.
Definitely had me worried but plan B was a plan A stream for sure!
Surprising how big those cut throats are considering that stream isnt very big. Another great video brother!
I feel the exact same way...that fish by the bridge shocked me. Didn't expect such a quality fish especially with a camper parked 20ft away lol!
Beautiful creek, awesome fishing and some bigums Lol. Can't ask for more that that huh ? 👍🏻
I agree...crazy good day!
Super fishing mister,nice trout!
Thank u so much!
Thanks for the video Drew, I really have a hard time grasping how much time you spend researching the possible streams in the remote areas you go to. As an older person and new to fly fishing I truly love your videos and always look forward to your next advection.
Adventure…
Another fantastic video! Also, dude, I am telling you... get a wading staff. I bought one a couple years ago and haven't fallen since! I used to literally be known for my funny falls. There's even one on my channel. Do it! Your wrists and knees will thank you!
Great Creek, and that Salmon? WOW!! Awesome Drew..
Super cool day!
Out of the fishing KZheadrs that I watch. You have remained true to your values keep it up Drew. Ps. Still love your videos, peaceful content to watch! Please don't fall for the money and greed, for some reason I don't think you will.
Excellent, videos and fishing tips and techniques, though at times I have to struggle to catch on your quick comments while fishing, but the videos speak for itself. your one of the best fly fishers out there. . Stay safe out there looking forward to follow on your videos.
Sorry about that, I talk fast, mumble and to make it worse...I look away from the camera lol. Thanks for the kind words...Definitely glad the videos speak for themselves!
A nice bunch of fish, helping a guy have some fun. Vicarious trippin' for the rest of us... I feel the bruised knees, too.
For sure, thank u much!
What a wonderful river , we have some similar in the uk but our wild trout are usually 5-6in long so nothing like your cracking fish but it can be great fun catching the little ones. ATB Mike
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Was going over goals for the past year and writing new ones for the upcoming year. One that popped out was my need to get back to creating some adventures for myself. As a happily marred man with 2 kids, its been the typical scenario... focused on family and career (as we should) but not focused enough on doing what I need to keep my mindset right and focused...which is getting back out there like I did before kids... sleeping in the back of my truck so I could get my fly on the water at first light or be at the trailhead. As a 13 year full-time real estate agent here in far north Idaho, getting out in the summer months can certainly be tricky. But with some advance preparation, it will happen this year... especially having a wife who not only supports me getting out there, but helps me make it happen. Thanks for some inspiration.
That's the way it should be. From 2007 to 2015 I didn't fish out of my local area very often. My wife worked, our kids were young and me being the stay at home dad...it was my responsibility do all the home stuff...and I couldn't check out when my wife had days off. As they've gotten older, I'm able to travel, this is what you see on my channel. Dig what I can do now...but not a chance I'd change any of it!
That was a fun video Got to see you dry drop And drew drop You better be careful Out there
Haha Drew definitely dropped!
That slip and fall looked familiar. I have done it many times in Idaho creeks(very slippery) Idaho is my favorite place to fish. Caught Kokanee in Idaho with a Swedish Pimple.
Yea, Idaho is the slickest I've been. I'd go with felt if I didn't fish a new stream daily. Might get korkers just for ID with 2 pair of felt/studded interchangeable soles.
@@LooknFishy I always used felt that I glued on my wader bottoms.
Beautiful stream. Great find. Do you plan on making any walk thru videos of this trip like you have on some of your other trips. I benefit so much from them.
If I get some time, I might try to make a few. I still have over 20 videos to edit from this series so I'm not exactly sure what walk thru's I can do right now.
Drew great save!! I love my Stihls but yeah I don’t want to listen to them either when I’m out!!!! Dude I just still can’t get over the beautiful water and wild trout population!! Especially the size of those fish!!! Really wish that existed in my state..
Haha...they were killing the vibe! Yea, definitely didn't expect that stream to produce like it did considering the access!
@@LooknFishy yup can’t kill that vibe!!
That was a tiny Kokanee! I guess that’s full size for that area, as it was coloured up for spawning!
Yea, stocked and landlocked. Read 10-12 was average with anything larger being rare.
When is rosenbauer going to have you on the podcast to explain the way you go about finding these drainages. Wondering what your process is. Would like to apply it here in Pennsylvania.
nice, the salmon was unexpected and beautiful cutthroat. not a bad location in any video you produce, appreciate it drew.
Definitely was a cool day!
Great looking stream and nice fish. A surprise fish is nice. Terrible forest fires may eventually change streams. I sure hope not.
Definitely a fun day that worked out better than I hoped!
Loving the vids! What river drainage are you at? St Joe? Do you have a video of your bed setup for the zr2 - wondering how you sleep in a 5ft bed truck
I do have a video on it. It's titled something like the chevy colorado makes a great truck bed camper. I have the extended cab version which has a 72" bed.
@@LooknFishy i
That was most likely a Sockeye. It that body of water drains to a lake, it's a Kokanee - Land locked Sockeye. Otherwise, it's a Sockeye
Have you ever thought on using a Tenkara rod in creeks like this ?
Enjoyed the as always. The stream was just spectacular. Just a quick question: I don't recall seeing anyone resting their index finger on the rod. May I ask the reason for it?
Thank u. I do that when I'm using more finesse than power. Basically, I point at where I'm casting which helps with accuracy and presentation. My finger is usually more on the side, I put the tip of my finger on the hook keeper(if it has one). I believe it's a taught grip but I have no idea by who. I do a traditional grip when I'm streamer fishing or trying to generate power and distance.
@@LooknFishy Thanks. This is what I suspected. I’ll give it a try when it makes sense. I’m sure practice is required as with all casting.
Some really nice trout! Now what kind of salmon was that smll red one?...I'm a tad hard of hearing. I've seen Salmon in Alaska turn red prior to die off after spawning, but that little red fish was too small to spawn.
Kokanee.
Yes Kokanee, a land locked Sockeye salmon. You would have seen them in Alaska alright. If They can make it to sea and return they’d average 5 to 8 lbs! If restricted to a life in freshwater 10” to 12” would be an average though some lakes such as Pond D’oreille in Idaho or Kootenay in BC they might bulk up to near the sea borne strains size.
Can't add more than what the other comments say. Other than I've read they might be considered a food source for bull trout and stocked my Idaho g&f.
Hey Drew. I was wondering what leader do you use on your 7.5' 3wt rod and reel?
I usually use a nylon tapered leader 7.5ft 3x then add on as needed. Been happy with orvis as far as brands.
You are an inspiration for me to save for retirement.....Love your posts.....I just wish you had a better camera, as it is very pixilated. Hope a new camera is in next year's budget. Keep up the great work.
The video is in 4k. You might check what quality the device you're watching on is playing in the highest quality. I have to manually set my phone each video when I watch...it automatically plays in data saver mode which destroys the quality.
@@LooknFishy I am watching on a Mac....the picture quality is really good....I was just thinking that the quality of your experience could be better documented with a GoPro....
I use a gopro hero 10.
@@LooknFishy Oh...shows my weakness for technology. The spots you visit are just so beautiful it would be nice to view them in higher resolution.
Epic
Right on!
I have to ask, did you not pull any fish out of that beautiful run that had the dead tree hanging over it? You made one cast in there and then cut to the next run...
Nope, not a thing...feel like they heard me coming lol!
Drew, at the beginning of the video you mentioned it’s an ant type of day since it’s overcast. Would you mind explaining your mindset here on ant v hopper ?
So I look for hoppers on bright warm days. I believe in dark colors on dark overcast days and light on light days. I've talked about why I choose an ant so often in part 9 of the series. But in the video. I was going with.. it's cloudy, the fish should be more aggressive...so a black ant was my starting bug. However, it was too productive and I couldn't keep the tiny rainbows off...so I switched to my top shelf hopper. Would have gone black/purple...but I didn't have that color on me. Brown/brown worked fine tho.
@@LooknFishy you’re awesome, great insight. Thank you
As a hunter, I eat them, only returning them if they are too small.....
are you euro nymphying? or what technique are you using? new angler here. thanks
No, fishing a dry or dry -dropper rig (big dry with a nymph dropped off the hook) my 8.5ft 4wt.
@@LooknFishy is that because out west most trout feed off the surface? as oppose to flies in the water (euro nymph? could you euro nymph in these streams as well?
Sounds like Google maps needs to upgrade their stuff. Can't believe the dude with the chainsaw wasn't on there.
Slackers lol!
What percentage of bites dry vs dropper?
Almost all the bug cutts took the dry. I couldn't keep the kokanee or small bows off the dropper which is why I dropped it.
@@LooknFishy thanks. I haven't watched the whole video yet. And how many casts do you make in a run before moving on?
If haven't yet checked out the owyhee mountains in south west Idaho you need to. You have both the snake river and the owyhee river and their run offs. Most people don't expect southern Idaho to be as beautiful as it is. Silver city area is awesome all the way over to the canyon lands in eastern Oregon the owyhee river has amazing gorges and canyons. I think you would enjoy the area silver city area and the high areas of the owyhees is forested but the canyon lands and the majority of the owyhee wilderness is mostly treeless but still very very cool it's also the largest most remote area in the lower 48 states it is larger than the frank church wilderness. I just got back from the owyhees today as I am from Nampa cool stuff
looks ideal. utopia.
Dude,i try so hard not to hate you,,oh well,of to THERAPY,,fish on drew fish on👍👍😝
Haha, I hear ya!
Hey! 3rd comment. Cool. Now I have to watch the video. 😎
As usual... great video. Those are some beautiful cutts. Thank you for sharing. I know it takes a lot of effort to make a finished video. Thanks. About 119 days until the Michigan opener.
Happy to do it. Definitely takes some time but I also appreciate I have a running journal to document my travels! Glad others appreciate the vids too!
Today’s dry fly name = “ burnt offerings”?
Definitely!

Those climate activists are killing the planet, Drew. Luckily you brought us some excellent flyfishing.
Haha it was a crazy fun day!
lol ,ya right?
who are the idiots with chainsaws they have no respect for the forests or the life that lives amungst them.
Those are the hard working people of Idaho who are working to make sure you have a home, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, your amazon boxes. They are the locals who live, work and play here everyday.
Have you ever heard of pyramid lake in Nevada? I live about 30 min away from the lake and go out there all the time. Worlds biggest cutthroat, just cause a 14 pounder last weekend!!!!
Definitely have!
Hell yea, hope to see you out here one day! Such a great lake for fly fishing monsters!!!
Amazing day for you? Cant figure where you are? Looks like up by Stanley
It was incredible!
