Making a Wind Chime

Welcome to the Bearded Woodworker. In This video, I show you how I made a Wind Chime from galvanized steel bought at the local hardware store. The steel is 1 1/2 fencing post and can be purchased from $6-9 per 6 foot poles. You could use all sorts of different pipes to make a wind chime, but I chose the galvanized steel as it's my 11th year anniversary married to my beautiful bride and the traditional girt is steel,
My micro phone was turned off on some portions of the build and that's why some instructions I had videoed, didn't make it into the final cut. Here is the website I used to find location of the holes, length of the pipes and even what tones I wanted to use.
www.leehite.org
I chose to go with the Pentatonic C9 chord, as I read it was one of the best sounds.
Here are the lengths and hole locations:
C note - 40 7/16" , hole placement 9+
E note - 36" , hole placement 8+
G note - 33" , hole placement 7 3/8
Bb note - 29 7/16" , hole placement 6 1/2+
D note - 27" , hole placement 6+
Here is the link I used to make a paper pentagon from a square piece of paper.

  • Beautiful Sound! I'm impressed and honestly it exceeds my expectations in terms material sound quality, I used to think aluminum was the exact sound to achieve that quality, now with this project of yours It gives me hope I could go with the galvanized steel pipe and still getting the desired results, will do this project soon, thank you very much Sr.

  • "This is so much harder than it looks!!" I took some old manure spreader pipe line that was 3 and half inch around, trying to make farm memorabilia, but as far as where to drill the hole and how far down to hang them and then the longer and placing that...IKES!!!!! LOVED YOUR SOUND!!!!

  • Yours looks quite doable for reasonable cost ( ie: honey-do please... ) and sounds fantastic. Well done. (Lee's site and videos are a bit overwhelming and technical for me, though a great resource for many things like templates and such.) Now to hunt down some tubing, fencing, or even shower curtain rods to cut into that amazingly soothing Pentatonic C9 chord sound. Thank you!

  • WOW, firstly, that has to be the most romantic gesture I’ve come across. I love wind chimes and I’d be pleased as punch to receive such a thoughtful gift. I loved the little dances whilst sawing, that made me laugh. Fantastic video and you’re very likeable. I’m subscribing. Love to you and your beautiful wife from England. xxx

  • Well, that’s just terrific. It has a deep and calming sound. It occurred to me that you could cut pipes for the remaining 6 notes, put them in a nearby rack and she could swap them out to make any darned chord she was in the mood for. Perhaps a minor 7th chord on a dark and stormy night.

    @NMranchhand@NMranchhand5 жыл бұрын
    • Ha ha ha....that's a great idea. I do still have the left over pipes (a year later) so that could happen. Thanks!
