Nice job man, I was waiting for this update. I knew you could get that swarm through winter and I'm glad you got the last laugh.
We just hope it shows that the saying, “A swarm in May is worth a load of hay. A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon. A swarm in July isn't worth a fly," is silly and more people give late swarms a chance.
Very impressive, frugal queen too
Yeah. Not too shabby for free bees!
Nice job!
Thank you!
Pretty cool deal! Had that happen to me with an august swarm the year before. Best bees I’ve ever had. Was able to make multiple splits from them and get plenty of honey. She still lives today. She came through winter pretty small this year though. Even had a Harbo score of 2 so that’s cool! It’s good to go against the grain sometimes and try some things people say won’t work. For some of us, its in our nature ;)
That's great to hear! Congratulations! We hope we get similar results with this one. Why do you think they were smaller this year?
Nice job! She is a long one One more frame just like one more cast in fishing 😀 Were you tempted to rotate the boxes?
"Just one more cast..." Love it! When they are small like this, we like to leave them in the top as long as possible so they can take advantage of the hot air rising. We don't vent our colonies so the air is stratified with the hot and humid air being at the top. Also, we bought these nuc boxes from a commercial guy and the bottom boards are screwed to bottom box. So, we have to pull all the frames if we want to do a reversal. We can't just switch the boxes around. When they get a bit bigger, we will probably just move them into a single deep.
