Many beekeepers are getting ready to split their overwintered honey bee colonies. There are many tried and true methods, but many have asked us how we do it. So, we recorded a short video of us splitting a colony and explaining how we use the colony after it has been split.

  • Amazing how many more splits can be made if we wait until they are showing signs of swarming.. those nursery frames rock I can set cell go on fishing trip for week and I have well fed Virgins to work with.when I get home . watch them they feed them larva. Incubator might be better to feed larva vs honey.. problem with honey virgin gets honey on her she gets superseded like 100% if the workers clean her causes damage.. that's smart idea start at the bottom makes sense..

  • Nice to marked queen, time saver there Do you ever add box like two weeks before so you don’t have to worry about them making cells?

    • We added boxes on 4/6. In our experiences, some colonies will still want to swarm despite having room. It is just part of their biology. However, it can help delay their swarming impulse. Good question!

    • Tim would add a crazy amount of boxes, sometimes seven meds

    • @@nkapiariesjeffbeezos796 Yeah! He made some towers that's for sure. It also had to do with the amount of time it took him to go through all of his hives before he would finally get back to the colony to inspect it again. I do wonder how many swarms he lost per year....
