On The Overlap this week, we have an exclusive interview with England and Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, brought to you by Sky Bet.
We caught up with Rashford during a pre-season training camp in Portugal as he gears up for his ninth season as a first-team player and his second under Erik ten Hag.
Following his 30-goal haul last campaign - his most prolific yet - Rashford reveals how much his personal psychologist and strength & conditioning coaches have helped him recover from setbacks and injuries since bursting onto the scene in 2016.
Marcus talks about the importance of having a close family network and overturning government policy, highlighting an all too real issue when he bumped into a childhood friend who had become homeless.
Lastly, he reveals his ambitions for Manchester United, and what it would mean if he could break Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record and his intention to win the biggest trophies at Old Trafford.

The data / facts, not soppy opinion / fairy tales, shows significant correlation between "poverty" (which Rashford defines as "have 7 yogurts in the fridge for the week. So I knew if I had 2 one day, I'd have to go without another day") and absent fathers. So he should campaign for a) fathers to stay involved and responsible b) mothers to have better mate selection. But as I said. That's encouraging personal responsibility. So maybe too much to expect.

Rashford has not had the same privilege as Neville did with squad depth and quality, standards etc. Rashford has grown up in certainly the most destabilsed state of Manchester United since I've been around. • Any time I see anything to do with this guy, I can never describe how proud of him I am. Not just as a footballer but as a down to earth Mancunian lad who grew up just the other side of Manchester from me. He’s a real credit to his family, particularly his mum. Really switched on and came across brilliantly in this interview 👏🏼

Would love him in North London but it's wicked to see Rashers back to his best for the football community

  • I’m from, & live in Wythenshawe, Manchester, the place Marcus is was born and raised in. Let me tell you it’s very easy to fall in with the wrong crowd here… & whilst being filled with some of the most genuine working-class people you could wish to meet, there are also a lot of bad influences here too. I’m a lifelong City fan and have had a season ticket since we were at Maine Road, but football rivalry goes in the bin when you’re dealing with people with the character of Marcus Rashford. You are a credit to our city/home and above all else a fantastic human being. I wish you all the luck in your endeavours (unless it’s at City’s expense, of course 😁)

  • Rashford has taken his game to a whole new level under Ten Hag. Ten Hag is getting the best out of Rashford. The key for Rashford is consistency that's what he needs to maintain in order to be a true world class player not just him but the whole squad needs consistency which no doubt Ten Hag will have installed in them. There's no stopping Rashford from improving even more but he's got to want it aswell. He's under the perfect manager who believes in him.

  • This lad has been blessed with a fantastic talent, but many are, the difference is he's worked hard to get the best out of himself. On his social work outside of football, I can't think of enough positive words to say about the lad. Anyone who critizes what he does has big problems as far as I'm concerned. What a top lad he is, everyone who has anything to do with him must be rightly proud of his achievements already. I feel there's a lot more to come from him going forward. Doesn't matter who you support & I'm not a Utd fan. You've got to respect what he is & what he does.
