I have had so many questions about the Festool Domino DF500 that I thought it a good idea to make a video. Thanks to some encouragement from a particular KZhead viewer the video has now been made. This is aimed at new users of the machine in order to help them with some of the basics.
As an American, middle aged, I can't tell you how much I appreciate a matter of fact, no BS, no endorsement, intelligent person who is providing just the information needed, with that perfect amount of Brit charm and wit. Thanks for this.
Hi Eric, Gosh, thank you so much. Cheers. Peter
As an Italian, over aged, I can't tell you ... etc.. Thank you very much, you've helped me better than Festool instructions and dozens of other KZheadr's videos. Keep posting!
As a Gay middle aged man I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your gentle soft majestic manly hands all over that powerful vibrating machine.
)
Thanks Peter, just what I needed.. a comprehensive guide by someone who used he domino regularly.
Essential viewing for first time users of the Festool Domino DF500. Peter thank you very much. Phil 😊
Hi Phil, Many thanks. Cheers. Peter
Very nicely done. At 63, I finally a large dedicated shop and can make all of the furniture for my family. My wife bought this Festool for me help me build faster. I received the whole double boxed set and it’s a bit overwhelming. Thanks for this step by step tutorial.
Hi Greg, You sound as though you have found your paradise - a lovely workshop, a supportive family and plenty of things to make. Good luck with everything. Cheers. Peter
I just brought a new domino machine home. Thank you for this tutorial!
Have fun!
Thank you Peter, this is a very useful tutorial. Festool should include a link to this in their documentation!
That is very kind. They could do that and it would not cost them anything if they asked my permission. Cheers. Peter
Thank you for this video. I'm a Yank who has just retired and getting my wood shop back in order. I've been on the fence about buying a domino and your presentation of the tool and how one uses it is very helpful. Obviously, this tool is very accurate and saves a lot of time, but as an hobbiest I have to weigh the pros and cons with the only con being its cost. Your kind demeanor and wit is a bonus and much more enjoyable than most of the content I've found. Subscribed.
Hi Jim, Many thanks. Peter
You save me from reading the manual and needless errors. Much appreciated.
Glad to help
Peter, I just bought a Festool Domino 500. I needed to join 1+1/4" legs for a "spider coffee table" that has legs cut at weird angles. My biscuit cutter just wasn't the right tool. The biscuit cutter is going up for sale. You are a wonderful teacher! I bought the Domino joiner with all the accessories you demonstrated. After I purchased the Domino joiner, I figured out how the accessories mounted but had no idea of which situations you would use them. KZhead and Peter to the rescue. Your video demonstrated that perfectly. Festool should hire you to demonstrate their tools. Your video covered everything about the tool from A to Z. Plus you made me laugh several times with your humor...."sod's law" aka what we yanks call Murphys Law. Thank you so much for the time you spent making this extremely helpful video. I wish the U.S. would get rid of our antiquated and cumbersome imperial measuring system. So many valuable tips in your video. I especially liked your tips on how to set the depth.
Hi John, You are very kind and I am delighted to have been able to help. Cheers. Peter
Many thanks for this. Like most commenters, I just got this tool delivered, and this was a great resource! Cheers!
Hi Charles, It is a terrific tool and one of my most used pieces of kit. Cheers. Peter
Very much appreciated the detail. My Domino will be here in two days and all this info is great. Thanks again!
Have fun but remember to use a dust extractor ! Peter
Domino arrived this morning so it was only right I took the time to watch this. Glad I did, thanks so much - simple and informative, not rushed, no stupid music. Perfect!
Glad it was helpful!
A simply OUTSTANDING video
Thank you so much. Cheers. Peter
Well that settles that. Best darn Domino video ever. Period. Others can stop making any more videos and us readers can spend more time making things and not looking for videos.....or at least spend more time figuring out how to pay for the Domino. Thank you Peter.
Gosh, Thank you so much. Peter
Loved your coffee stirrer joke!
Thanks for sharing this Festool Domino video. As a novice in this field, I've been really looking forward to watching this kind of video. It really helps..
Hi Zephyr, The Domino has really changed my woodworking for the better - joints are really easy, designs come to fruition quickly and woodworking enjoyment is maximized. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Your encouragement means a lot to me. Thanks.
Thanks Peter; I love the clarity and attention to detail in your videos.
You are very welcome. Cheers. Peter
Great video Pete. Thanks mate. I was flicking from the English section of the manual back and forth with the picture at the front to identify parts and try to remember the connection in my head as I read on which was slow going. Thanks to your video I also got all the bonus tips and tricks to set me off with my machine. I subscribed as I like that you are thorough instead of trying to condense a video into 10 minutes when it should take longer. Thanks again
Hi Jason, Many thanks for your feedback. Cheers. Peter
I agree. I also like that your videos are detailed...
I like your slow and even speed in showing all the little particulars. In my seventies and still have all my finger. Yes! keep them away from blades.
Hi Peter, You are very kind. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Funny, My father's name was Parker growing up and for some reason he changed it to Peter later on, Parker to Peter. I have been doing woodworking professionally to semi professionally since the 70's in a large shared shop in San Francisco's warehouse district with a couple other young guys.Long since had to move out of there. I am self taught and call my woodworking grade "B". Always room to learn and improve. You talked me into getting the tool and the domino set with blades. Fortunately this next job will pay for it. Goodby to biscuits. My biscuit tool may date back to the 80's.
Hi Peter, You are doing the right thing - the Domino has transformed my woodworking and I sold my Lamello to buy it. Cheers. Peter
Brilliant - I'm considering a purchase of the DF500 - your comprehensive, intelligent and unbiased presentation of the tool is incredibly well appreciated - I now know what I'm in for.
As I have probably said in the video - the Domino machine has completely transformed my approach to cabinet work. It is a delight to use and has really improved the enjoyment of my woodwork. Cheers. Peter
this is the best domino video I've seen so far, very detailed understandable explanation of everything! Many thanks for putting this together.
Hi Rich, Many thanks - please let Festool know ! Cheers. Peter
Thank you for this video, I did buy the Domino Set and your video makes using this tool much more enjoyable. I used your parf guide system to make my "MFT" table now using the Milwaukee track saw.
Glad it was helpful!
Still one of the best Domino how to videos on the tube 👏
Hi Dan, Thank you so much - cheers. Peter
Just had to watch it again. My domino arrives the other day and the kit will be here in a couple of weeks, , Festool is hard to get right now in the USA. Most things get back ordered .Keep up the good work Peter.
Many thanks for this - cheers. Peter
One of the best DF 500 explanations I have ever Seen👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Bernd, Wow, thanks! Peter
Its like watching the woodworking version of a David Attenborough documentary. Sounds just like him. I love it.
Hi Anthony, You are very kind. Cheers. Peter
Absolutely brilliant intro, thank you so much! Super-easy to follow, well structured, well paced. Top content!
Hi Peter, Thank you so much for your very kind comments. Cheers. Peter
What? No FESTOOL sponsorship for Peter? Boo! Love all your New Brit Workshop videos. Purchased my FESTOOL Domino full kit set May 15, 2007 and I’m still learning more uses for this wonderful machine. Keep up your excellent instructional videos and creative tool enhancements. One day those SOB’s will recognize and appreciate your support. 😎🇺🇸
It is a great shame that we do not have any woodworking shows as the demos are so useful and it is nice to handle the kit before making a purchasing decision. Cheers. Peter
Having just recently scraped enough cash together for the machine. I have watched dozens of videos but this one is the best by miles. So clear and concise. I have now watched this twice all the way through and it has been such a help. Thank you so much Peter for sharing your knowledge - you are a wonderful teacher!
Hi Annie, You are very kind - many thanks. Peter
Excellent Peter; all is now clear. Thanks.
Glad it helped
This is an outstanding, comprehensive introduction to the DF500. Thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful! Peter
Excellent as usual Peter.
Hi Penny, Glad you enjoyed it. Take care. Peter
What an awesome video. Oh that Festool would make videos like this and why they don't is beyond my comprehension. Just solid, useful, practical information not full of hype. Thank you thank you thank you! Please make more videos like this. So helpful for the first time user.
You are very kind and I wish you the very best with your new tool. Cheers. Peter
Thank you for your systematic approach to explaining how to use the machine. I just used mine for the first time and wished I had watched your demonstration first.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent presentation I recently quarried a DF500Q Domino Set have watched a few videos and your explanation was second to none.
Hi Michael, Many thanks for this. Peter
Hi Peter, I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford in the US Air Force in the early 70. I had the great pleasure of working part time in the Wood hobby shop while I was there. The shop manager was English gentleman who was a true craftsman. Watching your video reminded me of him his name was Bill. Bill was a wealth of knowledge in woodworking.
This is the best education I have ever experienced for the domino, thanks. I needed it. I am using my domino for the first time for a project and when I tried it several months ago, i made all of the mistakes. I laid in bed last night wondering how I could have success with it today. But thanks to you, i feel I can always go back to your video. Let’s see......
Hi John, Fantastic! Good luck. Peter
Thank you Peter for the one and only fully explained video on how to use a Domino. I learnt so much watching this. Bravo!
Hi Charlie, Thank you so much for the feedback. Cheers. Peter
As a new domino owner, I very much appreciate this video. Thank you for taking the time to produce such a useful video. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful!
If I could give this video 1000 likes, I would. Thank you! Your explanations are very clear and the presentation is impeccable.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you! Wonderful, well edited video. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
You refer to screwing the spring-loaded lugs on the faceplate out of the way. Like you I have found these very annoying and sometimes upset alignment but I did not know they could be locked away. I've just done this! Thank you - I always pick up useful tips from your videos.
Hi James, Many thanks for this. I also have the DF700 and the pins on that can be retracted and they stay that way until released. I believe that the older DF500 machines had something similar but it was changed at some point. My DF500 is over 10 years old and does not have that capability. Cheers. Peter
New Brit Workshop Hi Peter. You are correct regarding the older DF 500. I have the same version you have with the newer style pins. But I bought the old style base for the DF-500 because I like the older style pins better and I have the newer style base as a spare.
Thank You Sir.. I now know much more important setup steps than before. I watched your tutorial before using the tool for the first time. Great information and very helpful ..Thanks Again
You are most welcome
Hi Peter Thank your no nonsense straight forward explanation on the DF 500, I will be watching many more of your videos😊
Hi David, Many thanks for the very kind feedback. Peter
Excellent review. I learned a lot from your demonstration and thanks for the tip on working with MDF. Many thanks!!
Hi Gary, Glad it was helpful. Peter
Another simple video but great tips…loved the cutter upside down int he box one 👍🏻
Glad you liked it!
This was a very good and useful video. Much appreciated.
You're very welcome! Cheers. Peter
I’m going to sum up this video by plagiarizing from some of the other comments…. Intelligent, phenomenal, impeccable, intuitive, brilliant, outstanding, terrific and I could go on and on. Well done!
Wow, thank you!
Great video , informative, to the point and easy to understand with the camera shots showing everything clearly . Well done , keep doing more videos.
Hi Chris, Many thanks. Cheers. Peter
Excellent video, Answered all my questions. Much appreciated
Glad it helped! Peter
Wonderful tutorial Sir! Just received my D500 today and this really helps me to get started on my Domino journey. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Hands down the best intro I have seen on the Domino. Festool should send you some stuff for it.
I wish - but I am a Festool convert so it is good. Peter
Best instruction l have seen.
Hi Jeff, Many thanks. Peter
I am building a second 2’x4’ wall mounted bookshelf using a rabbet & dado joint at the corners. Cutting the dadoes on my router table isn’t too difficult, but getting the rabbet just right is “a bit fiddly” to say the least. Even on this simple project, a domino jointer would save me hours. Thank you for this excellent demonstration. For me, the fundamental question is whether I want to focus my efforts on the *process* of woodworking or on the *product* result. I do enjoy figuring out how to get something “right”; however, right now I need storage for my other workshop that has nothing to do with woodworking. In other words, I need the PRODUCT completed and a domino jointer would make that so much faster and easier. As a side note, that slot you have running around the edge of your table looks very handy for holding work pieces upright. I’m getting ready to make an MFT-type cutting and assembly table and that’s a detail I hadn’t considered before.
Get the Parf Guide System to do the top !! Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshoplol Peter - somehow I missed your response. I bought the Parf guide system a while ago from TSO here in America but am just now getting enough experience to build the track saw cutting station. I came back to re-watch this video because I’m about to “pull the trigger” on a Festool domino machine and wanted to verify that I need the extra guides that come with a slightly more expensive package. Your presentation here is VERY helpful.
That was an excellent and thorough review. Thank you sir!
Hi Scott, You are very kind - cheers. Peter
Incredibly helpful! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Great job! Leared soo much more than the Festool Company Domino instructional videos (which I find the company manuals and instruction videos quite useless). Thank You Again
Wow, thanks!
Brilliant tutorial mister! Greetings from a swedish carpenter.
Hi Framez, Thank you so much. Cheers. Peter
Thank you Peter; as always, an excellent video!
Glad you enjoyed it. Peter
This was a great video Thank you it will help me alot to understand my NEW tool. In the US it comes complete with all the assortment of attachments but you pay more for the unit
Hi Thomas, Glad it helped. Cheers. Peter
Thank you very much Peter! I've bought the domino but only now I'm ready to start!! Greetings from Switzerland..
Hi Stefano, Well done and good luck. Cheers. Peter
You are a fresh air in the ocean of tutorials. Much appreciated!
I appreciate that! Cheers. Peter
This is a very useful video. I just purchased one and there were many very helpful tips. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely brilliant machine! A professional can recover the cost of the ecosystem in a heartbeat 💗
Hi Manu, All my tools have paid for themselves and in some cases several times over. Cheers. Peter
A really good introductory video for the domino machine. Congratulations! And thank you so much!
Many thanks. Peter
I have learned much about fine woodworking over the past several months. Encouraged by your videos, I have moved forward in my woodworking pursuits with a great deal of enthusiasm. The enthusiasm has proven quite useful in countering the disappointment of my failures. Nonetheless, I am still proud of my considerable piles of scrap wood as proof of my gathering of learning and experience. Thank you again , Peter, for your fine wit and for sharing your knowledge of fine woodworking.
Hi Ray, You are really kind. Thank you so much and good luck with your woodwork. Cheers. Peter
First class presentation, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the revision class Peter.
Excellent video, very well done sir!
If I hadn't come across this video most likely would have gone ahead without dust extraction ending up cursing my bad luck once again...many thanks
Hi Ivan, I am glad that you have found it as it will really lead to disaster without extraction. Good luck with your woodwork. Cheers. Peter
Great video thanks
This is an exceptional video! Thank you!
Many thanks - it is a brilliant tool that has completely transformed my approach to cabinet making. Cheers. Peter
Very informative look forwards to the TS55
Thank you for this very interesting video!
Terrific video with clear explanation and demonstrations. These tools have become extraordinarily difficult to obtain due the supply chain problems from the pandemic; right now if you try to order a 500 from the typical suppliers in the US they are quoting a backlog of orders of 6 months or more.
Hi David, Yes, that is true all over but it will be worth the wait. Peter
Excellent video, after having a domino for 3 years I still appreciated some of your tips. Thank you Peter for such great contribution to the woodworking community
Glad it was helpful!
Peter, yet another excellent video, and agree with others, they add value, are clear and to the point - all with a nice style of presentation Thank you for all the info you included and will now buy one with confidence. Thanks again and keep up the good work. rgds Geoff
Hi Geoff, I used to have a big morticing machine but still had to make the tenons the hard way. I sold that machine and also my Lamello biscuit jointer and bought the DF500 from Axminster with a few accessories. That transformed my woodworking and I just wish that I had done it earlier. The Domino is a fantastic machine and mine is now 11 or 12 years old. It has never gone wrong and I am still using the original cutters. I have gone through many bags of 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm dominos and made some excellent joints (and the odd bish-up through haste or stupidity). Many thanks for your super feedback. Cheers. Peter
The black coffee joke made me laugh out loud
The tip of buying the whole set is really a good one. Thanks - i would have missed the chance otherwise.
Glad to help!
perfect in every way!!! thank you!
Awesome thank you so much for your detailed videos.
This is brilliant Peter, now if only someone had some in stock!
Peter, I have returned to woodworking since retiring and reviewed what tools I needed when I set up my new workshop. A traditional morticer was on the list but having had the DF500 for a year or so I'm delighted with what can be achieved. Your demonstration here provides an excellent presentation on how this machine should be set up and used. Clear, precise and an excellent introduction! So thanks!
Hi Victor, Yes, I sold my big morticer when I bought the Domino and have never regretted that at all. Woodworking is a great hobby for retirement. Cheers. Peter
Excellent, thank you! I just purchased my Domino 500 and you just provided an excellent tutorial.
Glad it helped!
Peter, you always produce phenomenal videos. This too has helped me so much. I appreciate your work in the development and content.
Hi Reg, Many thanks - you have made my day. Cheers. Peter
Excellent video. Thanks a bunch 🙏🏼❤️✝️❤️🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done Peter!
Comprehensive and informative as usual, great job Peter. Loved the magic trick at 13' 38" on the timeline when the ruler hops from your left to your right on the bench. Magic Circle here we come!
Hi Gareth, I have only just spotted that - I have told that ruler to keep still in my videos but it just ignores me. It works well as a rule but can be very disobedient ! Peter
Really great starter video, thank you! I'll be coming back to this over the next few weeks as I get acquainted with it
amazing piece of kit, great video as usual Peter, cheers.
Glad you like it
Peter I simply love your presentations they are easy to understand and follow. Long may they continue.
Many thanks!
Thank you for this incredibly helpful video
Glad it was helpful!
Extremely well done video. Very clear and thorough. I just bought my domino joiner and at least in the US, the accessories are already included with the unit. Agree that purchasing the dominoes and assorted bits are a good idea Thanks
Glad it helped
Great information, thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Lot's of great information and very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Peter. thank you. I enjoyed your video and will watch others. I just purchased a 500 and anxious to start using. I am in CT , USA and love your British expressions..
Hi William, You are very kind and enjoy your new machine. Peter
As always, awesome! Thank you Mr Peter Parfitt.
Hi Pat, Well done for subjecting yourself to this very long video ! Cheers. Peter
Excellent thanks
Hello Peter, new subscriber here, so glad I found your channel, you have the knack to explain things in a straightforward erudite manner making it easy to follow for the viewer...thank you.
Excellent video and very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Most useful Peter.. I have had mine about 9 months now but still found it useful Thanks
