I watched so many Defender reviews out in Namibia and your one was head and shoulders above the rest... Thank you.
What I'm really impressed by is the fact that he's driving over a washboard road and speaking in a normal tone, speaks volumes about the lack of... volume
Also the stabilized video proves less vibrations.
@@green_life7 not that much, you can see the lack of vibration in his arms, his shirt, the mic on his collar. stabilisation not really doing much here because its not needed.
@@Cafferssss , by 'stabilized video' , I meant stabilization provided due to the characteristics of car suspension and not by means of software/hardware of the camera.
@@green_life7 ooooohhh Yeah I see what you meant now
To be honest I'm more impressed that landrover found out these off roads route, props to the one that choose the route 👏🏻
jay r It’s pretty much the same setting that Toyota used last year for the Land Cruiser launch. By the way, I believe it was The Grand Tour that “put Namibia on the map”
Perfect! I was just having a Carfection binge and bam! Here's a new film! Top notch motoring journalism as always guys!
i live in Michigan (the heartland of Jeep and the new Ford Bronco) - I cant wait to get the new Defender and show the yanks how a true British Legend performs (both on & off road).
Anyone else being slowly won over by the looks and that’s coming from someone who daily drives a 2004 td5 defender
I've seen a few about on the road near me. I wasn't a huge fan at first but it certainly grows on you the more you see it
Yup - it is the replacement for my D4; the D5 is just pig ugly and uncomfortable.
couldn't agree more and thats coming from someone who also daily drives a td5 defender!
Not so much the looks (I daily drive a Puma 90), but everything else about it is impressing me - LR chose well with this Namibia press drive - it appears to have proved itself, and to me this is now the most desirable in their current range. Just wish I could afford one. Still keeping my Puma tho.
NO!
The looks of the New Defender is definitely growing on me!
Yeh, I hate to admit it, it's growing on me too. Of course except for when, I see the old shape and I revert back to my "this ain't it chief stance." That said, as long as I don't see any old shape Defenders often, this actually looks alright.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks unfortunately Greta Thunberg and co won't let car manufacturers build em like they used to anymore. At least not in Europe anyway.
I've seen a few about, certainly grows on you the more you see it
The most important question...: "Long Term Durability?"
I was just about to post this, but I honestly think we won't see the answer to this until we get an insight into the commercial leaf-sprung variants.
how can anyone answer this question lol?
@@berendpilon1632 leaf springs?
The one no one's gonna answer you cause... new suspension
@@andyblack9066 what do you mean? You answer a question by giving an answer, that's the concept.
The way henry managed to answer the questions whilst keeping a straight face i found quite remarkable. I would love to see any outakes. 😊
Great questions, great answers. This Land Rover series has been incomparably excellent.
Cheers for that 👍 - the review was head and shoulders above the rest!
Do a camel trophy with this “new” defender then we can put it in hall of legends 😊😊
The Camel trophy hasnt run for 20 years. Cigarette company sponsered events are not pc unfoutunately.
eastwood978 aww too bad on 1993 my dad was there at borneo tour the pic was awesome af unfortunately he passaway 18 years ago if not imma gonna go off roading with him again.
Well we have Dakar now, so if they want to really, test their metal nothing is stopping them.
I agree lets see this thing put to real test then it will be worthy.
ғɪʟʟ 1ɴ ᴛ҉ ʜ3 ʙʟᴀɴᴋs lets hope it will happen hahaha its gonna lit
Have you ever had that feeling where you suddenly know what you want in life? I want the new defender.
Who needs a house if you have a rooftop tent?
Good to know you can fit the new defender as I struggled to shut the drivers door on the old one due to my height
Am now imagining David Attenborough in a short-sleeved oxford shirt and red racing helmet absolutely hammering a go-kart around a track. Thank you for that! xD
Excellent information and beautifully presented. Thank you Henry.
Excellent review..... Thanks.... By far the best review vs the others over same terrain
I can't help thinking how much an offroader like this getting to 60 in less than 6s would have blown my mind in 1990 when I bought my first car. 😮
Wonderful video. Important questions. useful comparisons.👍👍👍
Man I truly love the film aspect I am learning from great channels like this!
great video as always
Seems like a huge deal to UK journalists, this car
Unsurprising really.
It's something UK nationalists can really sink their teeth into, even tho it's Indian
Maybe because IT IS a pretty big deal? Did you ever consider that? Also it's not just UK journalists....it's pretty much every journalist around the world. Sounds like they really loved testing this car.
Calling it Indian is like calling Ferrari American cos they are partly owned by Chrysler. Tata has nothing to do with with the design, engineering or manufacture of the cars. This is a British car designed and engineered in Britain by a British company
@@scottishfanta Just googled it... Land Rover Headquarters are in a place called Warwickshire in ENGLAND. Next door to Aston Martin apparently. Never knew that!
Another Great Video. Land Rover has taken lots of orders for the New Defender that will hopefully delivered later In the year
How do you know order volume?
this is the 5th best automotive channel in the whole of youtube.!!!
I love it, and I'm already a Defender fan before this. It's the kind of off-roader I can see camera crew on expeditions and extreme wildlife documentaries using. I think a lot of minds have been changed since its off road reviews.
Favorite suv now
These are brilliant off road vehicles. Look better in the flesh too
Defender, amazing off-roader, beast mode standard!!!
Love the look of the commercial 90. Steel wheels suit the look.
Did you drive automatic or manual gearbox? Gear Box shift works well for you looks far for a tall perso?
Thank you.well done
The question about it rolling over and still working in the Bond commercial... I think it's probably to do with the limp mode being a lot more able, with the car supposed to be an off roader it will need more leeway in being able to get home? I know they addressed this limp mode. I suppose it's a possibility, because no car is going to have the same exact roll (unless its coordinated) so it's always hard to tell if it's going to still work after a roll regardless what vehicle it is.
Nice! Thanks!
Love how many questions you answered and it's interesting how many you choose to be iffy about. Not hatin, just is interesting.
900mm is that standard or with raised intake that I presume to be part of a bolt on extra?
The topic of looks and styling seems a slightly surprising area of importance in a practical off-roader. But this new Defender is actually rather plain in a world of overstyled cars. One way to think of it, is that it stands a decent chance of still looking fit for purpose in 30-40 years, just as the original one stood the test of many decades of its lifetime.
I'm definitely buying one ☺
Excellent body control at 03:44
How water proof is the new Defender when it is submerged up to it's maximum wading depth of 900 mm? The TD5 Defenders had it's engine ECU under the driver's seat, which I thought was a rather odd location. How well did the air filter element keep dust out of the HVAC system? Would have liked to see how much dust was collected by the filter element. Did any of the test vehicles experience a failure of the suspension arms? I recall seeing a picture of a repaired rear suspension strut arm using a cut off section of a high lift jack....
This guy rocks as auto-vlogger.
I didn't like the design before, but I think it has grown on me.
it's better than its competitors
Want one so much
Magnificent.
What is up with all the dust on the interior air vents?
The New Land Rover Defender 110 is My Pick for 2020 SUV of the Year.
The new Defender at certain angles, looks Freelander-ish. I like this car a lot, the world needs this car.
I have a LR2 and like the LR2 looks, now 11years old, going great but this Defender does indeed tempt me.
If one looks what what companies buy when they need an off-road capable work vehicle in Europe, it's a medium sized pick-up with a covered bed. Look at any utility or telecoms company and it's small car-vans for road use and European+Asian marque pick-ups.
Will it pull a stuck Disco out of the mud? And can you fix it without main dealer facilities?
Which series Disco? and you won't fix it w/ stealership facilities, they do while you sit around drinking tea and coffee, and wait for the huge bill to pay - have a nice day :)
it is the same as a disco 5 but still will have this for the extra utititarianism of the inerior/ exterior and not having a fulgy design, if you want some rock crawler get a wrangler, if you want luxory and more capability Gerlanderwagen, but for it simple overlandyng and easy to use factor this is a great weekend/ countryside car, not safari o explorer vehicle. That why I can make my mind on the defender based on this Nanbia trip, first i need to know if ither are software glitches/bugs, what kind of abuse it can handle, especialy the air suspension, what can it make it brake and the quality of the product, how it handles weather and dirt (epecialy with that electronic fancypants inerior , not only the look of roughtness of the materials and toughness of the drivetrain.
I knew you would give positive answers to everything Defender related as soom as I heard your accent. WELL!
Wading depth of 900mm as standard. But what about with that snorkel? Or was it just for the dust?
Wading depth is 900mm without the snorkel. Yes it is mainly for cleaner air intake.
Is that sand around those central air vents? I know it's in the desert but is the cabin filter letting that much in?
Or maybe they've had the windows open, duh!
Chris Gibbons it's only on the vents. Duh!
@@dd9ag I suggest you get ur eyes tested
Done. Rewatched and it still looks the same to me. As far as I can see I'm the only one who's noticed it. But my initial post was only a question not a statement.
9:40 shows the toughest, most reliable trucks .. especially in Africa😎
I am really warming up to this new Defender. Having said that, would I sell/trade-in any new(er) Land Cruiser (pickup or SUV) for one? Nope.
I still like the old style
I dont understand many peple critisize defender using all round independet suspension without solid axle and ladder frame.Just lool back hummer h1 and lambo lm002,both of them using independent suspension but have incredible off road capabilty.I trust new defender has good off road capability compare to other brands
Who is the contractor (not marketing company) did Land Rover used for this expedition?
Which one is bigger new defender or the old one?
new one actually has a longer wheelbase, more headroom too
Спасибо ! Я провёл тест - драйв на 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 и с уверенностью могу написать, что англичане опередили в этом классе всех и немцев и японцев ! Хочу такой авто !
It's remarkable that Land Rover have created a vehicle which can destroy any Toyota or Jeep in an Off-Road environment while still being prestigious enough to fit right in in Knigtsbridge or Chelsea.
Perhaps "...Destroy any Toyota or Jeep in an Off-Road environment..." is a little strong...maybe the word, "challenge..." might have been a better choice...
Dreadnought9T destroy? Give me a break. The land cruiser and the wrangler will definitely be better off-road than this thing.
@@JTL-uv6cm the Land Cruiser couldn't even beat a Discovery which is basically a luxury car, let alone this Defender... Watch this if you don't believe me....turn on subtitles.... kzhead.info/sun/bLxvqbF8f4ijpHk/bejne.html
@@JTL-uv6cm and the Wrangler? Hahaha... You mean that 1* star NCAP rated death trap? Yeah I'll definitely be buying one of them when I decide I'd like to be crushed to death by a semitruck.

Liar. They wont be in the dealers for a long time to test drive.

A serious replacement...sorta...for the old defender...? we'll see when they bring out the pickup version...
Buffmeister being a unibody construction it’s not gonna be so simple to convert into a pickup :(
Replaces D4, at last
But still haven't addressed how can it be modify, most defender owner have it install big tyre, steel front and back bumper for over landing, and locker and other stuff
Will there be a large selection of after market vendors who design and produce modifications, like they have for Jeep, or is the vehicle simply too high tech and complex?
I will guess there will be a long backlog to order Defenders; if so, sales success will attract the aftermarket for sure.
Few Defender owners fit large tyres until they are well out of their warranty period. Land Rover don't care about this market.
@@tripleseven8361 This vehicle is no more high tech than any other new car on the market its their off road technology that eats the cake Land cruisers and Nissans have air strut suspension as many other vehicles
@@chaquisa1 Fair comment, but it seems that most of the new vehicles on the road today, really aren't meant to last...In North America, a large number of people trade their vehicles in after 3 to 5 years...It's rare to see one that's 10 years old or more...(My Jeep TJ is 14 years old, but it's relatively low tech)...You must agree that even the newer Jeep JKs and JLs, when compared with newer G-Wagons or the new Defender, would seem to be much easier to modify and correspondingly, have a massive after market selection of parts for replacement and/or modification...
❤️❤️❤️
Was waiting for this ,but just went with a Prado. We will see how durable the defender is in the first 2 to 3 yrs.
This is all very well but will take a pig market; a bale of hay to the sheep and can I hose the interior out afterwards?
Yes if that tickles ya fancy 🤪
@@Archiepopop I was joking of course - wonderful machine and when I can I will - interestingly they are producing a lo end spec - one assumes with farmers in mind!!!!!
Works defender v8 is 150 grand. you could have a top spec new defender, a track car and a trailer for the same price EASILY. people say the new defender is too expensive but forget that one of the last production old defenders was 150 grand. £150,00.00 One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Pounds Zero Pence.
I wish LandRover would put a camera pointing at the suspension as standard. Would love to be able to watch it working while off road on the screen.
tomtalk24. Same here. It’s satisfying to watch the suspension flex and bend.
What 🤷♂️
I am curious how the new Defender will size up to the Bronco. I think here in the US the Defender is going to be a tough sell at over $35k. Way too many options and only niche nostalgia for Defenders. The Bronco tugs more classic design cues too.
Buy a bronco then......
Bob K - you're dreaming if you think the Bronco, decently optioned, will be under $45k... most F150 are at least that.
Nobody outside of North America even knows what a Bronco is, the Defender is a much more globally recognised name. You try selling a LHD Bronco in the UK once you've got import duties attached, you'll get a few takers but not many.
@@cmacd8879 You are totally right, but I thought I saw there will be a stripped out version of both trucks. I personally wouldn't pay $40k so I will probably have to wait for a used one. You can spec a Jeep 4door for $32k so that is my pricing frame of reference.
I see a lot of “I’m on a sponsored trip to Namibia, do I dare bite the hand that feeds me” answers to these questions.
They all do it. Be madness not to
One thing for sure, the old defender aged gracefully and could be maintained with ease through multiple decades. This one is unlike many modern cars. That long standing sustainability through the decades may not be so economically viable for this one. One character of the old defender gone.
Another question: how reliable will be⁉️🧐🧐🧐🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same as the rest, NOT!
The most recent data says... Better than Audi and BMW. europe.jdpower.com/press-releases/2019-uk-vehicle-dependability-study
As reliable as any modern car can be.
Defender on Hell's revenge
It's funny, we know he's a great driver, yet his driving position and body language is from a teen learning to drive. Cool Q&A btw.
can defender be stopped by something? 😀😀
automotivetv yes by a land cruiser,
Fiat Panda Lego Defender Honda CR-V Nissan X-Trail and a Mountian Bike
Safari is a matter of life or death, as you'll often be surrounded by deadly animals like lions or leopards. Roads are often muddy, and when it rains, vehicles do get stuck a few times in a single journey. That's my personal experience by the way. Thus I would prefer something as simple as possible, pure mechanical stuffs like the older generation, which existed for more than 60 years. Electronics everywhere? It's your choice.
My hope is that time and their alleged iterative development attempts to revive the defender have taught them a lot. Time will tell of course but as an all round product it seems quite well thought out. I have a Lexus GX myself and reliability is paramount. I am cautiously optimistic at this time. Would be very exciting if this thing is indeed bulletproof!
Hi there, I hope so too. The world do move on. I just really hope that it's not just a cheaper version for Range Rover to drive bankers around B or C roads. It only have wheels, not belts, which means the law of physics can only do so much how clever they are. It's meant to be an essential equipment for people out in critical areas of the world. Otherwise it would be a pity.
If this vehicle is more off road worthy than say the Discovery, then I guess it has it's place in the market. This vehicle is more consumer centric than it's predecessor, but these are different times. It probably makes sense as is - history be damned. My only question is: Is it too expensive to be considered for overlanding?
waiting for a review from someone who has not had their flight and all expenses trip to Nambia payed for .
All car launches do the same sort of thing , it pays for itself in good reviews.it would be madness not to
@@Archiepopop yeah but everyone knows its a bullshit review
On a subject I have no understanding of, I am told, because this Defender has "85 ECU's", that should one happen to break down no towing truck will touch it. Could you elaborate?
All vehicles have had ECUs, starting way back 50 years ago. Even the old, traditional Defenders had ECUs, which people tweak to get more power. This car simply has more of them.
Send Andrew St Pierre White he says it how it really is
Andrew does, but he is conflicted; he does long overland trips and wants big payload, but hates air suspension. Land Rover believes you can only safely have big payload, like the Defender does, if you have air suspension that adapts to the load and keeps the vehicle safe and controllable. So they will agree to disagree, likely, even when Andrew gets a hold of one...
White is a moron when it comes to matters of an engineering nature. He's better off sticking to nature (filming it) which he can engineer quite well.
surprised they didnt mention ford bronco vs defender
Not really on the radar yet I suppose...Once it's been properly revealed, we'll have a better idea as to which vehicles it'll be competing with...
Mercedes-Benz G Class Land Rover Defender Jeep Wrangler Toyota Land Cruiser Series 200 Suzuki Jimny In that order
This is going to be a fucker to fix when all that technology goes wrong compared to the old defender.
And the elephant in the room? Air suspension. Maybe I missed it.
A lot of modern cars trucks and buses have air suspension nothing new
It looks more like a Freelander than a proper offroader!
Someone’s jealous 🤪
@@Archiepopop jealous of that crap?! Really? 🤷 Absolutely NOT, I'm really happy with my Defender TDI and my Land Cruisers.
How easy is to repair by yourself?
Just like any other modern car
Air suspension is very expensive to repair when it breaks! Not jungle friendly!
Agreed. My Discovery kept going down when parked, so replaced them with springs. A friend had and done the same with his Range Rover Sport. All good when they work...
Good job you can order it with coils
@@minitrundle Hello, did you have to program the ecu to 'delete' the air suspension software? Or was it just a simple hardware swap? I completely agree with you the only thing that I hate with this car is the air suspension which is becoming the gimmick in all new 4x4's and pretenders
Yup, wouldn't want that in the back of beyond (sans LR maintenance team)
When you order the car, don't tick the Air Suspension box. Problem solved!
1:17 to 1:22 ......wow. What a tragedy.
IS IT RELIABLE?
Will water ever be dry?
AS GOOD AS ANY NEW CAR !
Doesn't have a visable snorkel so the chances of it actually surviving driving through deep water is very remote cos the water would get into the engine and leaving you stranded in the water
The one in the video has a snorkel mounted
Snorkel doesn’t improve wading depth it’s for driving in dusty environments.
It's got a 900mm wading depth WITHOUT a snorkel. Which is the highest ever isn't it? I don't think any other car can match that?
Also yes, you can see the snorkel on the left hand side of the car. By the door mirror.
“Pee Hev” lol... it’s “Fev”
P-HEV and M-HEV The latter is not pronounced 'Mev' Lol
Why not buy a late model disco 4 and save a ton of noney?
My noney is on a new car
All yes why ? Yes the car is good one but at least make it logical enough .
I can just imagine...1st year of owning the new Defender....returning to dealer in limp mode or on a tow truck with issues like turbo hose problems, computer faults, abs sensor problems & oil leaks. This car needs a 7 year warranty, free roadside assistance, capped price servicing and be priced competitively to overcome a history of faults we loyalist have endured!
I agree. I owned an LR3 and it was a money pit at times. Land Rover has to know that people are angry about their experiences, it would be a nice touch if they loaded the warranty with this new Defender.
It just as good as any modern car can be
Is that dust i see on the dashboard if that is a yes then the doors need better insulated from the dust whilst driving across desert country . IE Look on 4xoverland channel
Maybe dust got in because the windows were occasionally opened...
No one mentioned the shorts? Really?
As someone who drives farm cars, this car is not what farmers want. Simple things like the leather and the touchscreen will get covered in mud and shit within seconds of entering the car. What farmers want out of a car isnt comfort, its a car that can go wherever they want it to.
Then get a basic 4runner. The interior is horrific 😂
As much as they say it's an off roader which may be true I'd say if you are looking for a 4x4 for the farm or for an everyday do it all workhorse then Toyota hilux, Isuzu or L200 pick ups are doing all the real work these days. New defenders will sell well to the city slickers and well healed country gentry. They look nice probably drive great but won't take the same punishment the older landies did through the years.
I'd always choose leather for durability...If you take care of it, it'll last for the life of the car and if it gets soiled, give it a wipe...
