    • +pandagames One can't "take" your job from you. You can't be working at Wal-Mart and have someone just show up and "take" your job. If there are people with needs then there are plenty of jobs out there. If there is a community that doesn't have a quickee-mart, then opening a quickee-mart creates a few more jobs. Same with opening up a haircut place, a donut shop, a dollar store, etc.

    • Praise GOD !!! I went to Balch Elementary Grade School from 1960- 1964, and it was such a beautiful building back then, and after looking it up a couple of years ago, it STILL is .!! It was the only grade school back then with a swimming pool.!!! We had a real nice track and field area, and an awesome playground.!! I LOVED that school, for I had excellent teachers who would give treats to the fastest runners, the best speller in spelling bees, and the A-plus students, of whom I happened to be one of.!! I checked and it is now a community center, and I plan to go there one day to reflect on when school was FUN, and a life-saver for me.!!

  • At least they have a counsellor. My school in Chicago didn't. Their nurse's office wouldn't even give me daily lunchtime medicine, because they were so understaffed. I had two allergic reactions as a result of not receiving that medicine. The worst thing was, a girl in my school got an allergic reaction and died in an ambulance because her Epi pen wasn't in school, and they wouldn't give her someone else's in the ambulance. They still refused to give me lunchtime medicine. My second reaction occurred then. At the end of the year, we moved. Those kids have it bad, but at least they aren't dying from a lack of medical care in schools. My school was rated as above average in Illinois.

It is even more important than being educated in specific subjects to be conveyed a certain positive or at least not unnecessarily negative outlook on life. Being betrayed by their own society in regards to very basic needs such as education will render them crushed for probably forever if left alone.

Also, every year the 8th graders take a trip to Washington, d.c. The fact that these kids don’t even have a proper gym makes we want to give all of my school’s stuff to them. I'm fortunate enough to be an African American living in a wealthy area near Detroit. My parents grew up and Detroit working their way out of poverty to be able to give me the life I have today. My goal in life is too be able to be successful and come back to my home town of Detroit and help these kids thrive too their best potential. Hopefully more people have this goal, not just too help Detroit, but to help other cities like this too fight for better education and materials.

There were times when I couldn't go onto the playground because there was an "issue". Times when I couldn't go to school for a full week or two because of "building issues" being fixed. And the many, Many, MANY days when I and my older brother had to bring sacks of basic food home with us because lunch wasn't available. The schools in Detroit are still bad, if not worse now as they were 10-20 years ago when I was in elementary school/middle school. I was in absolute *SHOCK* when I first started going to a school in Madison Heights where the lunchroom was HUGE. There was room for a band AND a choir to have separate rooms! • @@PactusPandaCactus Agreed, the politics has nothing to do with Detroit's demise. It was when all the car factories moved to China, creating what we know as the "Rust belt". It's not just Detroit, but Gary, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Columbus, ETC. Places that weren't the cleanest, but where people worked together to get us the cars we drive in our daily lives. Since they left, so did the workers, and gangs moved in tagging up every street sign and underpass in sight, and leaving the city to decay. Des Moines, which is near where I live, is also a small victim of this. Our Firestone factories are still in tact, but all of the grain elevators and textile mills went abandoned from the decline of the railroad. It's not as bad as some of the more eastern states, but places like Norwoodville and South Town have increased in drug trafficking, and everything just looking depressed. Then again, I think just about any major city has a slummy area in town.

  • I live in North Carolina, where the education is not very good, especially in my area. We're one of the most populated states in the US yet are #36. It was worse a few years back but it's still just as bad. My high school is so underfunded we can't fund the now-disbanded soccer team, so we have 3 sports - football and lacrosse and tennis. No clubs. Most classrooms are unsafe to be in because the tiles are falling. There's black mold in bathrooms and classrooms, leaks everywhere, and the intercoms don't work, which is a huge concern. A year ago when hurricane florence struck, nothing was over the intercom cos it was broke, so the teachers had to tell us to take cover from a tornado headed our way. School didn't even cancel despite the tornado warning. My school has 2 AP classes, that's it, and not enough teachers.

  • I live in Rhode Island and the school I’m at is really old, our tax funds are kinda messed up and stuff so our school doesn’t get enough funding to fix problems such as heating and all that. But we do get enough money to fund for proper supplies, equipment and courses so us students can get the education we need. The high school I’m going too is the exact same way, some of their courses get the supplies from the state because our state can afford to support these programs. With that being said, I’m so grateful to be in the district I am even if it isn’t perfect. I hope these kids get a better education and the school gets get the money they need to repair everything. God bless 🥺❤️

  • I worked in one of the top school districts in the country. We had beautiful buildings and did not have the same building issues but believe it or not I was in a similar position with supplies. I literally started with a classroom with only desks and chairs. I had no budget for a library, supplies etc. I taught first grade, the year kids learn how to read and I had to purchase all of my books myself. My first year I spent over $3000 of my own money and about $1000 each year after. I spent my weekends going to used book stores and garage sales. My ENTIRE life was consumed with teaching. Many people believe the hours of a teacher is glorious, but the time you have to be there is spent with kids or in meetings. All of your parent communication, planning, prepping, grading, is all done on your own time. It never ends. After 5 years, I left the profession and never looked back. I love kids and I loved teaching but given limited resources, having no support for children who have major behavioral problems, constant testing, no planning time, etc. I just couldn't do it anymore. Yes, I agree some districts have it worse than others but this is a national problem.

  • I was born and raised in Southwest Detroit and have experienced the crippling system first hand. When I was 12 years old my mother pulled me out of school, and I didn’t go back until I was adopted at 16 after my mother died. I was completely lost in the system and the school district did not care. A truancy officer came to my house *TWICE* in 4 years. Any other school district would’ve had my mother incarcerated. It’s truly devastating to know how fucked DPS is. I pray it gets better for the sake of the kids who are still struggling for their education. I’m very grateful to have been adopted. I went back to school kicking and screaming thinking I wouldn’t be able to succeed. I had a 7th grade level education and I never thought I’d be able to graduate. May 31st of 2018 was the day I graduated high school at the age of 20. I did it, and I hope all of these kids can someday as well.

We had a brand new 12 million dollar high school built 20 years ago and it is very nice, way different from the Detroit schools. Also, we had a brand new athletic facility built. This just breaks my heart how the city of Detroit can’t afford/maintain these schools that are in desperate need of renovation. The next time I walk through my high school, I won’t be taking it for granted.
