  • I used to work maintenance at a public school. The issues that you see are a direct result of people at the top wasting money on things that have nothing to do with the building. Example.... We had a backup boiler that needed the flame tubes replaced and some other reconditioning. This work must be performed by licensed companies and pass state inspection. Cost was going to be around $13K. People in charge did not approve because they didn’t see the point of spending that much on a backup boiler so denied the request. A few weeks later they approved spending $11K on a week long “team building” trip for administration that included zip lining and sightseeing helicopter rides. Fast forward a few months when our good boiler developed a crack in the rear head and had to be replaced. The new head was two weeks out and would take 3 days to install and get inspection. Backup boiler could only be used for four hours at a time and someone had to watch it around the clock. Unnecessary waste of time and money not to mention dangers. When you see issues such as this most people blame maintenance staff but in reality it’s administration and bean counters whom are to blame.

    • I went to a different HS to take a Criminal Justice class in my senior year and the school district installed several thousand dollar smart boards instead of fixing a leaking roof, there were 3-4 buckets at a time to catch water and you'd have someone coming in with clear plastic tarps to cover some of the problem spots and empty the buckets so they could catch water again Hell, sometimes you'd walk in and there would be ceiling tiles on the floor that had gotten too heavy due to soaking up water It was ridiculous

    • Fmono • 38 years ago School kid. We have since moved into a new school facility, and the old building was torn down in August after 40 years. We were temporarily in another school as our old building went down and our new building went up. Now the bells are only turned off in certain circumstances. Now the site of our old building is a fire and police station, with many volunteer firefighters.

I feel kind of spoiled to be in a school where every single shop room, science room, and hallway between buildings has a fire extinguisher, eye washers (not in halls), emergency showers (not in halls), and other emergency equipment around the school. I hope this school is better now.

  • I live in New Mexico and really this isn't surprising at all. The Indian reservations are notoriously unorganized, and our state gives schools exactly 2 cents of budget every year. Albuquerque public schools is also insanely corrupt as instead of giving the departments in school money for paper (teachers/students have to buy their own paper and supplies basically ) they line their own pockets then cry about how bad the schools are. It's well known here but APS is so corrupt and has the money to shut down any case against them.

This is an isolated area which is known for wildfires I don’t understand how this can be tolerated. People in other parts of the country don’t understand the conditions these Native American people live in these reservations. Some just as bad as 3rd world countries. Don’t believe me, go do your research. All my other schools had bells (though with my high school, it was a time tone on the intercom, but you get the idea.) At least their fire alarm system was working when I went there, but if it fails (and since it's such an old system, that can happen soon) they will replace it with a new alarm system as quickly as possible. That happened with another one of my old schools when the original fire alarm system from the 70s failed.

They are tough, relentless, and dedicated to the task... oh, and very well paid. I was honored to fight fires with them in 1987 in Klamath National Forest. Great folks.... Not sure if Navajo have such, but I would think so.

  • I work on Fire Alarms and our company refuses to do federal contracts. Just not worth it. They have some idiot design the Fire Alarm that is not trained to do so. They also refuse to comply with local codes stating it is federal property and is exempt. Most of the time they refuse to pay for service contracts that perform the monthly inspections required by the NFPA. They will specify equipment you can only purchase from one source. If they specify an Edwards panel then only an Edwards dealer can install and maintain that equipment. The solution to that is to specify off the shelf equipment so any licensed Fire Alarm Contractor can work on and get parts for that equipment.
